starlight1968sg:For others, are your broadband at home and mobile phone from the same telco?
Yes, both from Singtel.
But they don't give any discount unless you also subscribe to Singtel TV. :stompfeet:
starlight1968sg:For others, are your broadband at home and mobile phone from the same telco?
starlight1968sg:They knew caller ID is a feature most people want, so they make it chargeable.
I think caller ID is essential but $5+ per month per line to have it is a bit tough for me to swallow

I feel for you.
I’ve been with Singtel for nearly 15 years and never got
any special treatment.
Think must jump ship once in a while since there is number portablity.
Sometimes the telco gives good deal to entice you to jump ship.
figurekoala:I would suggest you take a look at the balloting history then.BigDevil:Where do you live? Or are you prepared to move nearer to the school?
Hi BigDevil, so sorry for just noticing your reply. We can move to the aiming school.
In your case, it makes sense to continue status quo
instead of paying for 3 separate subscriptions.
SIM-only plan is only good for small potato like myself
who is paying full published rate. Those enjoying special
discounts off the monthly subscription will probably not
see enough savings to make them want to switch.
:hi5:
Makes economical sense too!
I am currently on Singtel Combo 2 plan, and is soon due for renewal.
It seemed logical to renew the subscription every 2 years.
After all, you are still going to pay for the same monthly subscription if you don't renew.
But with renewal, you can get a new phone at a discounted price.
No brainer, right?
Well, I did some look-up, and found that telcos actually offer a no-contract SIM-only plan.
The main difference between the SIM-only plan and regular plan is that you don't
get any phone with it. And since you don't get a phone, your monthly payment is a lot lower.
So which one is better? To take a discounted phone but pay a higher monthly charge, or
no phone, but pay less per month?
I compiled my findings into a table below...but first, disclaimer.
(1) Since I'm a Singtel subscriber, I based my research on Singtel price plan only. However, other telcos offering is pretty much the same
(2) Singtel SIM-only plan comes in 2 flavour: no-contract, and 12-month contract. With no-contract, talk time and sms are chargeable, and you get 3GB data bundled. With 12-month contract, you get (per month) 150 mins of talk time, 500 SMS, AND 5GB of data. So I based my comparison using the 12-month SIM-only plan since it looks to be a better deal.

Top of the table is the side-by-side comparison of the features.
As you can see, between SIM-only and Combo 2, you will be paying over
$400 less ($600 vs $1082) after 24 months on SIM-only.
Then the question is, does the telco offer the phones at so much discount
that it is worth paying more than $400 more in subscription?
Bottom (coloured) of the table shows some prices of mid-range phones and high-end
phones. Prices of the phones for SIM-only plan are quoted from retailers such as MobileSquare,
Mobyshop, etc. Prices for the combo plans are taken directly from Singtelshop.com.
Factor in the discounted handset, the difference is no longer $400 for a 24-month subscription as before.
However, it is still cheaper to take up SIM-only with a savings of $100 - $300+!
So does it still make sense to tie yourself down to a 24-month contract?
