Hi I think for private tuition with tutor like those current or ex, it will be abt 40-60 /hr onwards.. they command more than full time tutors imo..

I’m looking for a tutor for a friend’s daughter who’s entering P5 next year. Her English is on the weak side, so prefer the tutor to cater to her needs. She tried home tuition but the tutor just disappeared 1 month later, no idea why…We later presumed the girl preferred a class setting rather than 1-to-1.

We were at parkway center when we chanced upon these two tuition centres side by side on the 8th floor, where my friend’s office is also at. Any recommendations or reviews for the two?

i just received a notification from dd’s school on asking parents to join some networking program to hopefully "strengthen relationship between the teachers and parents".
any of you got similar notifications? i am keen in working with my child’s teacher to help her do better but im afraid i might need to commit time if its for extra activities etc… my dd is in pri1 btw.

Well.. Some views/comments..

1. The teachers like to use short forms.. I feel this is very unprofessional. For e.g., when the students are asked to take down notes in their pupil's planner, the teachers wrote things like

\"Do Maths WS 2, Ex 1 to 4\"
\"Do Eng WB 2\" etc..

I feel that teachers should not be lazy and write in full \"Do Maths Worksheet 2, Exercise 1 to 4\".. How they expect P1 students to decipher or parent to decipher what they're writing.. And I feel using shortforms is not conductive to student's learning.

2. Many cases, the level of English used is not suitable for a P1 student.. Basically, for some homeworks/assignments, if the parent never assist, the student would not be able to understand a thing.. The student cannot be independent and this is not good for the student's learning progress if they are used to everything also must ask when doing homework which is supposed to be individual effort...

This brings up another point.. Are the school expecting parents to do a teacher's job??v Parents are not trained to teach.. it is quite frustrating sometimes to get a P1 kid to understand some concepts..

Regarding what you just mentioned,

(1) Usage of short forms: In my opinion, the teacher would have explained to the class, or at least shown them the pages they would need to do. If the child was paying attention, she would have known what the abbreviations meant. Moreover, the teacher would have used the abbreviations many times when giving homework, so if there was any uncertainty right from the beginning, the students would have raised it up. Granted that probably for P1 kids they arent that vocal, but the teacher would have said verbally said, \"Worksheet 2, Page 1\" etc.

It being unconducive for students' learning is too far fetched an allegation too. This is something the students have to learn, in the past or present. ERP, HDB, CPF etc etc. Even our teaching methods are TPS (Think, pair, share), or even our education policies, have abbreviations: TLLM (Teach less learn more). Imo, abbreviations are just part and parcel of learning in SG schools, no?

(2) On parents doing a teacher's job: In the beginning years of a child's education, her parents play an important role, especially in their involvement in her schoolwork as well as teacher-parent partnership. True enough, parents are not trained to teach, that's what teachers are for. Many a time, worksheets are given to students in the hope that they will do, and return to the teachers. These worksheets will be marked and returned, discussed and explained in class. That's at least what a teacher would do. It is good that you are involved in your child's work, hence your worries that he/she might not be able to cope. but not to worry, your child's teacher will take care of that area and at least, go through so that the class will understand.

Learning has to be on the part of the kid, that's when he or she will remember the lessons and use them in future. That's the basis of many lesson plans created by teachers nowadays. Dont be too harsh on the teachers of today, they are really trying their best!
