Melodies:

Are you saying 'The number of vacancies available at these top JCs number in the HUNDREDS EACH for those O level students to get into these top JCs (then, will be thousands vacancies in those top JCs since so many JCs)? You sure? Why so many O level students cried foul every year. some said, they got 0 point for O level still can't get in RI ? huh? :? :? :?

I'm interested to know the situation as I don't have dc who has done O level.

• RE: COP 2012 - For Secondary Schools in 2013

SSM123:
Dont think 250 is top 10% this year. My son got 251, but I didn't see the statement on the EESIS scholarship being printed on the S1 option form. Many students did very well, so the cut off point could be higher this year.

top 10% does not qualify for eesis

it is the top 1/3 of the independent school intake, which is roughly 262.

IS / IP schools cater to the top 10%, which is 250 and above

entering the IP / IS school does not automatically means qualify for eesis

so, for 251, you will not see the eligibility statement in the S1 form

• RE: Bell Curve - To remove or not to remove?

Will_lim:
I've come across a great blog and want to share it here:

http://hedgehogcomms.blogspot.sg/2012/10/piecing-together-psle-puzzle.html

The article has really made me to ponder over my views about PSLE results. As they are calculated based on the bell curve or t-score (your relative score), I'm more convinced that this is a fairer type of assessment since it takes into account other variables (e.g. difficulty of the papers). But witnessing so many children nowadays have been stressed, pressured and even gone hysterical, I wonder if it can help to de-stress the kids if the bell curve system is removed.

The blogger has pointed out:

\"Ranking fosters competition and discourages collaboration because it becomes a race where it's about outrunning your rivals rather than performing to the best of your ability. I'd rather score an A and have my schoolmates score Bs than score an A* along with everyone else.\"

I quite agree with him on this idea that this system is actually promoting an unhealthy competition.

For myself personally, I have been discouraged and depressed very much during my school years as despite how hard I kept trying, I seldom got the grades I wanted. I guess maybe a sense of achievement or a little of satisfaction could have made my school life better and more enjoyable!
whether the bell curve is removed or not, it does not matter - it still exist. The normal distribution of people of diff degree of cleverness or dumbness exist in the population, even if every one denies it.

if you are depressed or discouraged, then work on understanding the truth and the truth will set you free. changing the presentation of talent distribution of removing the curve does not solve the problem. your problem is understanding yourself, your ability, and your definition of achievement. you are so far following other people's definition of achievement to be your own target and hence find yourself discouraged
Are you sure they already receive EESIS ?

Are they DSA students ?
My daughter got 265 + 3 and didn't get form or anything for EESIS.

U do not get a form. It's just a paragraph in the S1 option form given to everyone.

Look at point 1a. EDUSAVE ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INDEPENDENT SCHOOLD (EESIS)

The first line under that header will state that your child is eligible for EESIS
.

Parents with DCs scoring 262 and above, please see the text in bold if u think your DC was not \"awarded\" the EESIS. It's just a line to inform u.
some people can't read, must have people to read it out

Interesting insights:

http://petunialee.blogspot.sg/2012/11/how-does-nyps-do-it.html?m=1

Interesting. What is cause and what is effect? Is the relationship between NYPS students scoring well a causal or a casual one? I.e. NYPS caused the students to be good, or the students (or their parents) caused NYPS to be good?

And last but not least, how different is a child's outcome in LIFE different, had he attended NYPS or had he not?

My view is that the home environment is quite a bit more important, and I think in this blog post there are many elements of that too.

So my take (as always has been), fix the home before you fix the school. It's not so much how NYPS does it, its how NYPS' students' parents do it, IMO.

Lee Kuan Yew attended Telok Kurau English School and became the founding father of modern Singapore

Lee Hsien Loong attended NYPS and is now the PM of Singapore

same outcome, diff school

You know something the \"majority\" doesn't know? Or is this purely your speculation?

I know as much as the majority knows by piecing together publicly available information, and looking at the response from authorities and hearing the experiences of people around me. Most parents are too busy coaching their kids, keep their jobs or buying their next property, so they did't bother whats happening around them. Things are changing very fast and a lot of us are sometimes caught off-guard if we didn't pay attention. δΈθ§ζ£ΊζδΈζŽ‰ζ³ͺε˜›γ€‚ πŸ¦†
quick, share, what is the the big conspiracy ?

there goes again...
vague reference, no facts or numbers ,own interpretation but very definite conclusions which you will not put down in words but hint hint , nudge nudge ...Maybe I am the only one not getting it , maybe I am dumber I realise.
So can you or some kind soul enlighten me?

Ok you win.

Hope we don't see newcomers flooding our school system at the expense of the locals. Hope changes can be made to entering schools with a lower than COP score using DSA for GEP, IP program in some JCs that discriminate against good students by asking for 3 points with 6 subjects. :scratchhead:

If not the children slowly crawl their way up to uni in ITE or Poly .. provided they don't pick up bad habits and fall by the wayside in the process. The kids can take the easier IB route, but not sure our kids are suitable for that system.

Sweeping changes are required, but with lots of defensive stance from either ignorance or vested interests, but I'm not sure if any non-superficial changes will ever be made. I'm out of here for good. πŸ¦†
why not follow the bumiputra priority policy of malaysia in the education sector ?

Models is like \"visualised\" algebra or algebra in pictorial form. You can take a look at Dr. Yeap Ban Har's from model to algebra published by Shinglee to get an idea.

you are right

model method is simply algebra in pictorial form

wow jin power..... those kids over there not belonging to this category must be feeling damn stressed and disappointed, even thou they have good scores below 250..... pressuring envirnoment......

some parents like to put their child in this competitive environment.
Other parents do not.

What I saw:

No one compare scores.
Parents hugging children.
Teachers encourage every single child.

Lowest score was not mentioned.
Names of children scoring 270 and above were called out.
The highest T-score boy was not singled out.

2 all rounder pupils (above 270, role model for good character and active in CCA) were mentioned.

I didn't feel parents want their children to compete with each other...they just want their children to do their best and they give the support.

Pressure is usually self inflicted. If the child has done his/her best and as parents we give them the encouragement and support, there is nothing to compare against each other.

There are always late boomers. Every child will blossom in their own ways.

As parents, we want our child to be in a conducive learning environment where teachers and parents work together to help the child to reach his/her full potential.
well said
