While RJC and HCI undoubtably continue to attract some of the brightest kids, the question of NYJC overtaking some of the old favourites is kinda 'iffy'.

One can point to the COP and argue that it is getting good quality in and is among the most popular school among O Level programme cohort, the anecdotal evidence in terms of the matriculated students in the most 'desired' courses, i.e. medicine, law, etc as well as the students picking up the scholarships awarded are still from the 'old favourites'.

I do think NJC/VJC are not as good as compared to more than 10 years ago. Just look at the president scholar awards, NJC used to have many in the 1980-2000, but not anymore now. Nowadays are always from HCJC or RJC. This year a lone one from ACJC. Noticed past 3 years those president scholars from HCJC are gals from NYGH.

It's hard to distinguish SAP schools from normal secondary schools nowadays, they all spoke English as their normal communication. Even in their school compounds. Maybe you only heard of SAP schools like NYGH of HCJC coming out top in chinese competitions only. Top JCs are still RJC or HCJC, NYJC is improving every year and it had overtook the old favorites like NJC, VJC.

Go by past years, think each CCA allows 1 or at most 2 DSAs. They cannot exceed quota of 30% for DSAs and through affiliation from NYPS.

For sure HCL is not easy. Especially as the NYGH HCL teachers have high standards and use failing in WAs as a means to teach: Dont make the same mistake again, girls! On the bright side, this (some might say, harsh) way of teaching does leave an impression on the girls. The good thing is, you and your wife can actually help your girls with HCL! I'm pretty hands off, other than nagging, due to cannot make it Chinese standards. Not sure if your RGS girl has an easier time of it with HCL?

My eldest also took HCL in RGS, it is also quite tough, and she will be taking o level chinese soon. I do think standard between RGS and NYGH is about similar, but NYGH probably makes the student more appreciative of chinese language and link them to culture events like mooncake, CNY, dumpling makings etc.

NYGH Year 1 first half the HCL dept typically fail a large part of the HCL cohort, mostly due to them sending a message \"This is not your grandfather's HCL.\" Cuz they frown upon kids importing their P6 way of learning and memorizing HCL phrases for essays. We were alarmed and this was explained to us by the HOD

Good news is, HCL grades typically improve dramatically by end of Sec 1. My Sec 2 kid's HCL is incredibly fluent which surprises us cuz we are an English speaking household.

My eldest in sec 4 RGS, youngest in sec 2 NYGH. My wife always worried their HCL, I do look and they are quite difficult by my standard. Though both my wife and me are from SAP schools also. I told both of them they need to master the language as Chinese will be very important language when they grow up, both economic and culture.

Both my gals also are in same situation, stack of notes (mixtures of subjects lying around). You have to keep nagging before they file into respective subject files. Both my gals still put in reasonable time into preparing for WAs, but I noticed nowadays, written WAs may be only 50%, the rest are project WAs. This is quite different from our time. HCL is quite difficult, my younger gal in NYGH scored 17/30, and she claimed her chinese teacher told them half the cohort failed.

When you enquire how their peers are doing, my gals mentioned they are many into Genshin and dramas. I think this is the trend now.

Rumor says CCA minimum height requirement is 160cm, but not confirmed. The selection will be very competitive, and finally we gave up last year.

Think so as the school's DSA and affiliation for nyps together cannot exceed 30% of cohort, so DSA is competitive. RGS can take more through DSA up to 30% of cohort.

Why when teens commit suicide, everyone immediately jumps to the conclusion that it must be due to parental pressure? I believe most of the time it may not be the case.

Take Sun Xueling’s sharing for example. She said her happier times were at St Nic Sec and NUS. Her suicidal thoughts at JC seemed to be triggered by some insensitive / snide remarks at her, feeling of being excluded by her schoolmates and perception that she wasn’t the right fit in the school.

What Sun said is quite true, kids are good at hiding their emotions, so if they were bullied in school, they may not tell their parents about it. Imagine a teen being labeled “fatty and useless” by the entire class and over a long period of time could well cause the child to go into depression as well.

Other examples, being physically abused or parents going through divorce or loved ones very sick plus exams are coming etc.

That said, these external events are triggers and not the root cause. These individuals may be more prone to depression to being with due to genetics or other medical reasons and these external triggers just push them over the edge.

Society must be made more aware of mental health issues, recognise the signs and make treatment more widely available. Most importantly, remove the social stigma associated with being mentally ill.

My feeling is that RGS (not sure about RI) is excessively competitive from my elder DD's experience conveyed to me. Her schoolmates are all obsessed with assessment results, marks, exam results. She even related to me an incidence in sec 2 that she suspected someone was flipping through her bag to check her assessment result. I did feedback such incidence to her form teacher during PTM.
