hiya all
my 13month ds2 had stranger anxiety when he was around 8 months , and if strangers talk to him, he will start to cry.it gets better now though, with us bringing him for walks almost every day.
but he refused to let pple other than family members or close relatives carry him, not even when my mum's friend who played with him happily when we bump into her while shopping , but the moment she wanted to carry him, he will start crying
it is \" u can touch me, play with me, or even kiss me, but no carrying :siam: \"
i know it is good in a way pple can't carry him and run off as he will scream his head off.
I know it is a phrase they will go through.how can i help him overcome it?
thnks!

RE: All About Autism
haha schweppes
Yes!!
i like chibi from Sailormoon
so cuteee!
i think after my daughter is diagnosed with autism, and hers attending numerous therapies, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social skills classes, i have made lotsa friends with pple from different walks of life, the therapists, her social skills classmates parents.
i believe that group support is very important, and even in this forum, we supporting each other is so important, it gets us going on.
i have a close frien that i share everything with her about my daughter, my daughter first day in primary 1, therapy sessions, and even her daily life, it helps to keep me sane too, like esp when my frien is saying , well done!! she is coping well in school\" or \" keep on going, she seems to be alot better now!\"
really motivates me, i guess what i need at times, is really to let it out and share with someone .of course at times, i will really break down and just cry.
i try not to cry infront of my gal, she wil come up to me and ask\" mummy why are you crying?\" have to hold back my tears and not to let her know that i am worrying about her. -
RE: All About Autism
i was in denial when my daughter was diagnosed with autism. she has high functioning autism.but quickly brace myself up as she only has us as her family to support and help her.
have our up and down days .
i used to break down infront of the teacher or even her therapists whenever we talk about her condition, but it has been better lately, as she seems to be transiting into primary 1 quite smoothly .
i will always cry when i watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbeyIG7Fz8s&feature=related
esp the part where \" if you are family, loves me unconditionally, banish thought such as \" if he would just...\" and \" why can't she...?\" I didnt choose to have autism. \" I may not be good at eye contact, but have you noticed that i don't lie, cheat at games, tattle on my classmates or pass judgement on other people?\"
even when i am typing this, i have tears in my eyes too.
it just brings alot of emotions to me, esp when i think about my daughter.
sometimes when i pass comments that her younger brother seems to like daddy more, she will goes up to me and say \" but mummy i love you!!!\" then gave me a big hug ..hehe really got me smiling
makes me feel that everything is worth it. even if i were given a choice, i will stil want her as my daughter no matter how she turns out to be.
this phrase also got me going on \" That which does not kill us makes us stronger \"
friends here, hang on!! there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel
lets walk towards there, no matter how tough and slow, we will get there somehow. :xedfingers: -
RE: Special needs first wk in pri 1
Hi Ran1977
It is Changkat Primary school
Just walking distance from my house
My daughter has sensory issues too, loud noises and strong smells.
but the allied educator is always there for her , during assembly as the sound volume during assembly might be abit too much for her to make sure that she is ok

RE: Special needs first wk in pri 1
Hi,
my daughter who is starting P1 this year has high functioning autism too.she has went through social skills class, and lotsa therapy to prep her for P1.
I am glad that the primary school that i enrolled her in is very supportive.
I actually gave KK hosp the go ahead to release her information to the primary school so that she will be given the support when she goes in. I rang the school counsellor too, and brought my gal down to meet her in November last year and had a long talk with her about my gal's needs in school. The school counsellor was very supportive and told my daughter that she can go and find her in her special classroom where lotsa kids will be drawing and playing together during recess time. The school allied educator rang me in December when he received the letter from KK about my daughter's information. We had a long talk too about how we can help her transit into P1 smoother. The allied educator really impresses me, he offered a change of class for my daughter as he feels that there is an experienced teacher in another class will be an ideal choice to be my daughter's form teacher.
On the first day of school, the allied educator smsed me to ask me if he can meet us before the assembly starts. Parents are allowed in the school for 2 days, during the assembly and during recess
he even brought us to meet the form teacher and told us that the form teacher is aware of my daughter's condition .
My daughter is now sitting in the front row in the classroom, just directly infront of the teacher, they actually have a few seats that are near to the teacher's table. She has a partner in class who will remind her of things that she shld do and not do. The allied educator and i always keep in touch via sms and calls to update on my daughter's behaviour in school . So far, its is still ok from what he advised.
And i noticed that my daughter actually looks forward to going to school.
which is a huge change from during her kindergarten time. She will be sobbing when she needs to go to school during kindergarten and not wanting to participate in any activity.
But now, every morning, she will run to my room and ask me, so what time we leaving for school? my partner is waiting for me!!!
i am so happy. Every day she will be telling me about what happen in class, and during recess time with her partner n classmates.
She will be smiling when I walked her to school.
i remember during her kindergarten times, it wil be holding my hand and reluctant to let go when it is time for school.
Now , she wil smile and wave byebye mummy!!! and run in to school with the rest of the students once we reach school.
keep my fingers crossed that it will last ! :rahrah:
There is light at the end of the tunnel...though the journey might be longer and tougher to reach, but we wil get there somehow. -
RE: Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)
hi meeyah,
i think Berries at tampines central seems pretty good.
my gal is now attending the class without me.
the teachers there are patient, they even recommend i stay in with my gal if she really can't get used to attend the class alone.
but i want her to attend the class alone as i feel that she will learn more if i am not sitting besides her.
now after each class, the teacher wil tell my gal in chinese, \" you are so clever girl today, so brave. i see you next week ok?\"
giving encouraging words to my dd.
my dd wil tell me, the teacher says i very clever in mandarin  -

RE: Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)
hi all,
i signed up my gal, 4 yrs old this yr, at berries, N2 .
yesterday was her 4th lesson.
For the 1st 3 lessons, i actually have to attend with her, as she keep asking me not to leave the room and was sobbing abit when i want to leave.
Yesterday i left her with the assistant teacher and left the school. i told her teachers before i left the class that she wil be sobbing for around 15 mins then will be fine.
i sneaked back around 45 mins later to peek back at the class, and true enough she is not crying and is listening attentively to the teachers :celebrate:
her teacher even told me when i went to pick her up after her class that i am so spot on, she stopped crying after 15 mins
my dd's mandarin improved quite abit, she can tell us that, the night has fallen, my daddy and mummy have come back home in mandarin
have to revise with her the notes though, as the teacher feedback that her memory is quite good, but just that her pronounciation is very bad .
the teachers at berries tampines are very patient, telling me that sometimes it take time for the kids to settle into their new environment, but eventually they wil settle in
