There are so many aspects to the four English papers that I am not able to cover them all here.
So I'll just provide some information on the two components that you highlighted. And even then I can only cover certain areas given the time and space.

There are different styles of essay questions that can come out for Composition - Descriptive, Personal Recount/Reflective, Discursive and Argumentative. Each essay type has a different essay structure and the focus a little different. The first two require a stronger vocabulary and description, on top of a sensitivity to details and emotions. The latter two will be better suited for students who are more methodical and structured in their thinking process as these essays are more based on the points they present. Bombastic words, poetic usage or emotive language are not required or appropriate here. So knowing one's own strengths and what question type suits one is crucial in the selection of one's choice, this choice will largely determine one's outcome.

For comprehension there are two different types of passages - the narrative and the factual. Most students perform badly for the first, as the question type leans more towards inference, language use, tone and effect. So students who read Literature will have an edge. Knowing the different question types and the way to answer them will make the task less intimidating. Of course, students need to understand the passage well in the first place to be able to answer the questions effectively. So having a strong vocabulary and good reading habits will surely help.

They hv a branch in upper Thomson Road and a newly open branch in
Clementi Avenue 3, next to the Clementi Mall.
Any views on the school and their courses?

just to add on, just want to find out Nan Hua environment as compared to Pei Hwa, i.e. i saw on the past threads that streaming is done in P3, 4 and 5. want to find out if so-called top and bottom classes are known to students and if my child is not in top classes but middle or lower classes, do they still get good and caring teachers? So far, I only read about top 3 classes but seems like no differentiation in all the other classes?


Wonder when the new principal took over, is it now a more or less stressful environment.

Really need your advice in order to make an informed decision. Thanks!

we are choosing between Nan Hua and Pei Hwa for my son. It seems that though Nan Hua is a top school and has a beter ranking than Pei Hwa but the environment is better than Pei Hwa. Below are some points on Pei Hwa:
1. They stream students starting P1 every year till P5 and they are put into top to bottom classes where all students know which are the best classes and the worst. very bad for self esteem…
2. Among the top classes, a few marks difference will be able to downgrade to lower ability class. Very stressful…
3. Best teachers are allocated to the top classes and the middle esp lower ability classes often gets relief teachers and not so committed teachers…


Can anyone share about Nan Hua on above points cos I really find Pei Hwa too stressful…

need advice if PH is really very academic driven as what most people say?
is it very results oriented and also heard that they stream the students very year from P1 based on results? people also say they will allocate the best teachers to the best classes and those in the middle and lower end will get lousy teachers and a lot of relief teachers? Are the teachers caring in general whether is best or worst class? isn’t it suppose to be a holistic school given that it is a mission school??? so worried to send my boy there cos he is not too bright…

my poor 18-month girl had a bite (we really are not sure what exactly…) on her right leg. We thought it was normal mosquito bite and just put some cream and left it alone for more than a month. Later went to see a PD and claimed that there was an infection and was given a antibiotic cream. But after applying for a few days, the bite part had some improvement but the bacteria travelled to her lymph node (near her groin) developing a 2 x 2 cm absess (pus in it). Was referred to KK and they did an opn to drain out the pus in end Nov. But after two weeks of dressing change every alternate day, the wound seems not healing well and doc may want to put her on GA again and get some body tissue for testing…my girl is really suffering…

Does anyone heard or experience about such skin problem?

Am trying to seek second opinion at a TCM who can help on skin disease. Any out there who can recommend one?
