    • RE: Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)

Hi, I have a few questions regarding subject combinations in Sec 3 IP.

      1) I heard double science is the most popular subject combinations. Is this so? Are there still 2 classes each for triple and double Science classes?
      2) My daughter is equally good in Physics and Biology and is indifferent which one to pursue if she go for Double Science. She is still uncertain of her future path yet. As such, should she take Physics or Biology?
      3) How are the study hours like for Sec 3 & 4? I am thinking of asking her to try opt for Triple Science but am worried that 9 subjects might be tough to manage given she is currently taking Higher Chinese and I was told she is required to take Higher Chinese for O Level. She has regular CCA on Tues and Thurs as well as her extra enrichment classes outside school.
      4) If she were to take Triple Science, other than the usual curriculum, are there other commitments outside school hours? And will there be a lot more projects compared to Sec 2?
      5) Passion Pursuit - Is this taking place outside school hours? What is the Liberal Arts Academy about?

Hoping to hear inputs from parents or SCGS girls currently in upper Sec IP.

      Thanks.

:thankyou: grateful for your time and opinion. Stay safe!

      https://eunoiajc.moe.edu.sg/curriculum/subject-combinations/

EJC's subject combinations are listed clearly on the website.

A lot depends on how academically inclined and strong your DD is.

The first and foremost important thing, is to clear the IP programme and get promoted to EJC, and for most students, they want to be eligible for 4H2s. For progression from Sec 3 to Sec 4 on the IP programme, you need an average of at least 60%.

If your DD is consistently a high scorer, then there is the option to even take 10 subjects.

Most girls will do 8 or 9 subjects.

If your DD plans to do Arts stream in JC, it doesn't really matter whether she takes triple or double science.

If she plans to do Science in JC, then it depends whether she plans to take Bio or Physics. If she wants to do Bio in JC, then do either Bio and Chem, or triple Science in upper Sec. If she plans to take Physics in JC, then do Physics and Chem, or triple Science in upper Sec.

      Hi!

      1) Subject combinations, then grades if the subject combination is over-subscribed. It doesn't mean you need to be top 25% to get into Triple Science - a number of academically strong girls do not opt for Triple Science. Some prefer to pursue 3rd language / Art / Music as the 9th subject instead, and do not have the appetite to read tem subjects.

It is true that some girls who opted for Triple Science did not get it. (This is so for the batches that have one triple science class - there was a period when SCGS had two triple science classes.) So not everyone who opts for Triple Science gets it. As for the precise allocation mechanism (which grades the school looks at etc - whether it is overall, or Maths and Science, I am not sure).

      2) Double Science students have 2 late days a week (excluding third language, BSP etc) whereas Triple Science students have 3 late days a week. (late days = ends at 3 pm) This applies for this year's batch of Sec 3s.

      3) Majority of HCL students do not take O level chinese at the end of Sec 3. Whether there is a select group who is asked to do so, I am not sure. My DD wasn't asked to.

      4) A good number of girls try for triple Science but all are fine as they get their choice of Humanities or Double Science combinations. I am sure some girls are very happy with one less subject as the workload is heavy in upper Sec and many have CCA or other outside commitments. You can't do Triple Science in JC in any case so it really isn't necessary to do Triple Sci in Sec School.

      5) Depends a lot on the Sec 2 Humanities teachers that year. For my DD's batch, there are more girls taking History than Geog. The Sec 3 History teacher apparently, was phenomenal. In fact, my DD says a good number of girls in her batch will do History in JC (herself included).

      Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the detailed information. It really helps!

Since the IP girls will eventually progress to Eunoia JC, we thought it would be good to choose a subject combination in Sec 3 to allow more flexibility at JC level. But I don't know the subject combi offered at EJC and if it makes sense to start planning at Sec level. In fact, my gal do not even know which uni to go to, what to major in post A level. Seems like she can just opt for double Science. What's your view?

Hi, I was searching this tread hoping to find out more about SCGS streaming for IP at Sec 2. Please pardon me if this is a repeated question.

I understand that there are 4 IP classes with only 1 class doing triple Science.

      (1) does SCGS allocate classes according to grades or according to subject combinations? Meaning the best class is doing triple Science which is the top 25% of the cohort and the last 25% will be in the 4th ranking IP class?

      (2) for students taking triple science, how often do they stay back in school per week for extra lessons in Sec 3 and 4? And the duration of the lessons?

      (3) for HCL students, are they required to sit for GCE O level for HCL in Sec 3?

      (4) is triple science a popular choice in SCGS?

      (5) do most students prefer History over Geography? Heard my gal saying it seems like most girls prefer History to Geography.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi parents, hope everyone has started the year well. I am hoping to get some advice here. My girl, currently in Sec 2 IP, was sharing with me earlier that she needs to choose between 2 projects- special projects which seems to require more commitments and OPP projects.

Any parents here with daughters who have been through this? My girl is tempted to do special projects but is concerned that she might not be able to cope considering her school workload, CCA and outside school commitments.

Does doing special projects bring about extra benefits or bonus points? If she doesn’t do special projects, how will this affect her overall score?

      Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

      Thanks.

Hi, I am keen to take over the Sec 2 Lang Arts notes for Romeo and Juliet. If there are anyone keen to let go of the notes, please PM me. I am also open to pay for it. Thanks.

Hi there, yes! Same here! My girl was struggling to get her assignments done and has been working till late night. Fortunately she managed to sleep slightly earlier this week.

She has been going through her notes, doing her revisions etc but she is telling me she is far from being ready for EOY... quite worrying.

I hope your girl is coping the pressure well because coming week is the real battle. I believe she will because she has a supportive mum. 😊

Hi, time passes so quickly. The EOY exams is starting real soon. My gal is starting to feel stress preparing for exams. I didn’t know how to help her because she is my first born and I didn’t have friends with kids in SCGS IP track. So I am hoping to get some help from this forum.

My girl had gotten an average overall score of 78% for her CA1. But I Guess that’s because it was still the honeymoon transition period from Primary School and as such, the test papers were relatively easy.

I have seen my girl doing her homework conscientiously and revising for her tests. Nonetheless, for CA3, her grades dropped. I did an estimated calculation of her average score and I think it should range from 67% to about 72%. I am not sure but does this means she isn’t coping well? Or she isn’t revising effectively? I don’t know the average score for her class but I heard that there are girls failing a few subjects.

In subjects like History and Geography, how do I help her in preparing for open-ended questions? I can’t remember the terms used. For History, I think it’s SBQ and SEQ.

If someone with experience can share with me on how to help my child prepare for End of Year exams, I would really appreciate that. She tried requesting for past year papers from the seniors but didn’t managed to get any. And she told me she couldn’t find them in the library either.

I am feeling anxious and a bit stress that I couldn’t be of much help at the moment.....

      Hi chujoe,

I hear you. I'm beginning to think that I've slightly underestimated the prep and work that needs to go in to the EOY exams.. my girl is in Sec 1 IP and although the workload has increased from when she was in pri school last year, she has been coping well with the load and hasn't shown much signs of stress until just very recently last week and today when she was visibly upset that she hasn't completed all her assignments.

I reached out to her form teacher by email to keep an eye out for her, which she did today and I was appreciative.

I will be trying to communicate with her more during these next few weeks to see if I can help her more in how to cope and manage the exams. All the best!

I am not in any SCGS IP parents chat group. I didn’t know there was something like this.

perhaps, you may want to join your own IP class parents' chat-group, so that can touch base with fellow like-minded Secondary Year 1 parents, on common ground interests, similar educational discussion issue (topic) ?

You may approach your daughter's class Form Tr, if she is currently already an enrolled pupil, studying inside SCGS. Form Tr can help to connect you with the relevant designated Parent-personnel-in-charge, of the parents whatsapp group.

      In Secondary schools,
normally there are 2 type of parents' chat group, can join.

      1) at the entire IP level

      That means,
since there are four IP SCGS classes, parents from these 4 IP classes, can join the parents' chat group, so that anything of concern regarding IP topic, across entire level, all parents inside the loop, stay alert.

      2) at the individual class level.

That means, any happening of concern inside your own IP class, you can stay updated, in tune

Hihi, knowing her, I believe she is worried for both. she thinks and believes she didn’t do well in general for CA3. But of course, she says no one in her class knew what the average benchmark was. From day 1, they were told that IP pass is 60%. So from her perspective, she is at borderline. Furthermore, to get into SCGS, the girls are usually at least above average in their primary school, which means their average percentage is 85% and above. As such, to my daughter, she sees it as a tremendous drop in results, although she is aware that the number of subjects she has to do now is much more.

She is also worried about not having enough time for revision. I am trying to help her understand and analyse open ended questions but I think she worries too much that nothing gets to her. Hoping for the best..

      Why?

Because she didnt do well for CA3?
Is she worried about promotion or worried about not getting all As?
Or is she stressed because she doesnt understand the lessons?

I think you should find out the causes of her stress in order to help her.
