DHS est COP 12 to 15??...same level as CJC and worst than ASRJC??...I thought they should at least same level as NY, NJ..well probably people prefer the real JC life....
Apparently according to the teacher, they accepted their own O’level students around this range. With only 80 places, I really doubt it will be the case and maybe criteria for other O’level students might be different too. Understand quite a no. of students with better scores from her school are applying for it.
Anyway, I low key juz hope she get into Poly ..

I never even knew about the “thing” Poly peeps have against JC peeps, until I started dating DH. Apparently people who have been thru JC give off an elitist vibe.

I think it’s due to the difference in COP in the past. As per earlier comments, in the past, 6-10 pointers opting for JC would probably find themselves in the news and even a 15 pointer picking the poly route is likely to create a buzz.

Today, with poly courses COP going as low as 7, I don’t think many people can reasonably claim that JC people still has that elitist vibe.

But I guess even among the JC will also have this issue. My niece who’s from Tp JC went into NUS biz course can feel that too, since most of the kids who went into that course are from RJ, HC and they already had their own clique, so she made no friends there for that 3 yrs. And not like she’s an introvert.

Yes, already analyse everything for her. Told her final decision is still hers and she has to work towards it in whichever path choose. It’s her life anyway. We can only support..

Sometimes, they have to think it out and experience the ups and downs for themselves. For us, we advised our older girl the other way - to do A levels first, then poly. We knew she couldn't handle poly at 16, and hoped that the 3 years in MI would help her grow and mature a bit more. After that, she went to poly, and would probably have been ok. But she was also offered a university for a course she preferred. So you never know, if your daughter takes A levels, she might still do well enough to get a university place. At worst, take a longer route.

Thanks for the encouragement. Anyway, she has decided to apply for the JC course at CJC, DHS (COP est between 12 to 15 according to them when she attended the open hse) and Meridian. If she can’t get into any of these 3, she will settle for poly business course.

The challenge for going to JC isn’t about getting in... it’s about doing well enough to get something out of it, especially if the aim is for popular courses.

      Floppy,
U are absolutely right. Studying in JC is totally different from secondary school times. Any subjects are going to be tough. If one scores below average, it left with little choice for uni courses’ selection.

      The reality is

Those who go to Polytechnic, graduated with a Diploma, with skills relevant in an industry -
      Can still find a job.

However, those who graduated with an A-level certificate, from a JC -
Cannot find a job, unless they proceed onward to a recognised university.

So, if one don't do well at A-level, cannot enter into a proper university, then they have wasted 2 years of their precious golden time of youth, in a JC.
Sigh.. repeated this non stop to girl.. Think I am still talking to a wall :gloomy:

Yes… will talk to her again about it. Heard of colleagues kid can’t make it to any course in Uni… so now not sure what to do next… juz waiting to be enlisted into the army. I really don’t want that to happen to her. At least with a poly dip, she still can get a job first before deciding if she wants to further her studies. Anyway if her ultimate goal is a business degree, I think poly isn’t a bad choice. Just convincing her is tough…

Perhaps Clara's daughter can watch Ong Ye Kung's video (Facebook, 8 Jan). One girl failed twice in A levels (Arts) and subsequently moved on to poly comms.

Good to call on both JCs to check which Elective papers (Paper 2 English Renaissance or Paper 3 The Mind and Self) they are preparing their students for. Paper 1 is compulsory and the books are all classics, so not to worry too much. I think I'd freak out if Paper 2 is the elective your JC is doing. 😓

It's not a guarantee that you'll score A/B grade in H2 Lit if you had A1 for O level E.Lit. But take heart that your girl will breeze thru GP.

Since she's scored an unexpected C6 in Humanities, that means History is quite out for her. Moreover, Paper 2 H2 History (Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, etc.) looks boring to me, but useful if you wish to pursue international relations.

Thank u.. will definitely ask her to watch it.. few more days to convince her.

More like just JC coz some of her friends dsa into jc thru sports with lower grades than her. It’s more like she feels kind of left out if that she can’t make into a JC.

Sometimes I think it could be our fault for not giving her the science tuition earlier. She only start her chem after sec 3 and no tuition for bio.. :stupid: coz she always did better for her bio as compared to chem.. do we thot she should do fine.
That said, the problem with Business and Accountancy, the 10th percentile IGP is ABB/B and AAB/C (using NUS as a reference). So she will need to score very well, no matter her subjects combination.

Well, the hope is that since she has dropped Sciences, her 3 H2 subjects will be more suited to her abilities and interests, and she can do better. That's what I told my daughter when she went to MI, and although she didn't do exceedingly well, she got into a course which she is interested in. A great relief to me!

Frankly, would a person who doesn't like Maths want to study Accountancy? I remember having a big fight with my father over this when I was 19. I still don't like numbers now, and can't imagine how I would have survived if I took Accountancy.

There’s a difference between disliking numbers (numerals) and disliking math concepts. Hence, when you dislike maths, which of the two are you really disliking?

As for the 3H2 subjects, based on her subject scores, I can identify Lit as one. Can’t think of another 2 strong ones. It will most likely have to be Econs and sometime else. MI has the ‘advantage’ of offering POA, but today’s JC no longer has the commerce stream.

The challenge for going to JC isn’t about getting in... it’s about doing well enough to get something out of it, especially if the aim is for popular courses.
I agree with this also.. that’s why I strongly feel that poly route is more suited for her.. but she is not open to it.

I am not so sure, but I heard that if a student got posted into a JC, he can still switch to a poly course within the first month if he feels JC is not right?
