JC or Poly?

Well, the hope is that since she has dropped Sciences, her 3 H2 subjects will be more suited to her abilities and interests, and she can do better. That's what I told my daughter when she went to MI, and although she didn't do exceedingly well, she got into a course which she is interested in. A great relief to me!
Frankly, would a person who doesn't like Maths want to study Accountancy? I remember having a big fight with my father over this when I was 19. I still don't like numbers now, and can't imagine how I would have survived if I took Accountancy.
As for the 3H2 subjects, based on her subject scores, I can identify Lit as one. Can’t think of another 2 strong ones. It will most likely have to be Econs and sometime else. MI has the ‘advantage’ of offering POA, but today’s JC no longer has the commerce stream.
The challenge for going to JC isn’t about getting in... it’s about doing well enough to get something out of it, especially if the aim is for popular courses. -

I am not so sure, but I heard that if a student got posted into a JC, he can still switch to a poly course within the first month if he feels JC is not right? -

Based on the subject combis available at MI, Math is compulsory and serves as the contrasting subject. I'm not sure if H1 Math = Add Math. In any case, it won't pose a problem because it should be manageable. And if it is similar to Add Math, all the better so the student can score even better in it.
If H1 Maths is still compulsory, that's basically repeating Add Maths. Kind of pointless but shouldn't be something she needs to worry about.jtoh:

As for Law, they may not have a long list of prerequisite subjects for the local unis, but I believe they will place emphasis on good GP/KI grades and humanities subjects like Lit, History, ELL etc.
Accounting will serve as the contrasting H2 subject since it is classified under Science and Mathematics. -
I find maths concepts profoundly uninteresting. However, I find numbers surprisingly interesting once somebody adds the $ sign in front. That's all I want to say regarding the relationship between mathematics and accounting.
The JAE booklet lumps Principles of Accounts under Science/Mathematics.
I tell you it is really easy. So long as debit balances with credit you won't fail... unless you purposely put expenditure under assets and liabilities under revenue. Then you may go to jail. :siam:
As for Economics and Business Management, they are essentially BS subjects like English Literature. Perfectly suitable for moving on to Law.
That said, you will die of boredom if you don't like dealing with $$$. -

My dd juz got her o levels results,16 pts for L1R5 and 11pts for L1R4 without the 2 bonus points. She wanted to choose the JC route but hardly any choices for her grade, probably juz CJC if the COP is the same as last year. Shld we encourage her to go to poly? But there isn’t any particular course that she like.. probably juz business studies since she will be eligible with 9 points.
With 16 points, maybe you should just focus on the 2 JC she qualifies for the time being - PJJC and YIJC. This year's national performance is good, so I won't look at CJC (Arts 15 pts?).
If distance is not a factor for either, ask daughter to look at PJJC's and YIJC's Arts subject combis and see if she's comfortable with any of them.
She may have to retake H1 Math, but so be it. Most likely she'll improve from C5 in 2 years' time. Change a tutor if need be.
I notice PJJC is pretty restrictive in that they only offer 4 Arts combis that exclude H2 Math. In PJJC Arts, H2 Econs seems to be compulsory for all combis, so is she game for that?

Alternatively, she could substitute Chem with History or Geog for a more typical Arts stream combi.She got A1 for Lit, A2 for both Eng n Chinese, B3 for both E Math and Chem, C5 for A Math and Bio,C6 for combine humans. What I am really concern is her A Math, coz the few kids fm the same tutor managed to score As.. So it seems to be an indication that she has no flair for math.
The only courses she doesn’t mind is probably business studies, coz it’s most general. Optometry, Pharmaceutical all not interested.. sigh. Just feel that she wanted to go JC because most her friends are in that route..

When she wants to follow her friends to do A Level, is she thinking of following her friends to the school they wanted or just to do A level in any JC? -
More like just JC coz some of her friends dsa into jc thru sports with lower grades than her. It’s more like she feels kind of left out if that she can’t make into a JC.
Sometimes I think it could be our fault for not giving her the science tuition earlier. She only start her chem after sec 3 and no tuition for bio.. :stupid: coz she always did better for her bio as compared to chem.. do we thot she should do fine. -

Perhaps Clara's daughter can watch Ong Ye Kung's video (Facebook, 8 Jan). One girl failed twice in A levels (Arts) and subsequently moved on to poly comms.
Good to call on both JCs to check which Elective papers (Paper 2 English Renaissance or Paper 3 The Mind and Self) they are preparing their students for. Paper 1 is compulsory and the books are all classics, so not to worry too much. I think I'd freak out if Paper 2 is the elective your JC is doing.
It's not a guarantee that you'll score A/B grade in H2 Lit if you had A1 for O level E.Lit. But take heart that your girl will breeze thru GP.
Since she's scored an unexpected C6 in Humanities, that means History is quite out for her. Moreover, Paper 2 H2 History (Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, etc.) looks boring to me, but useful if you wish to pursue international relations.
