Is there like a "what to bring on first day" list somewhere? Or are the boys supposed to bring all the books on first say? Asking coz my daughterโ€™s sec sch gave us a list of what to bring for her first day.

      Thanx in advance.

Just wondering, is it normal for primary school to have 2 vice principals? Could it be that it is now a transition time for one of the vice principals to learn ropes from the current principal and eventually take over as the principal?

Yes it is getting more common now to have 2 VPs. In fact, I heard some schools have 3 VPs.. the additional VP in charge of Admin or something. It goes to show that the load for the school leaders is getting higher. Plus I think it's good coz it means that teachers can look forward to better growth progression in their career.

Let's not forget another element of the equation.. us parents. Change in direction.. this may happen as a new principal may have certain things that he/she may want to implement. But culture and values.. I think it won't change so much. Established schools have seen many change in principals but have always maintained their values and culture.

So if any principal try to shake the boat too much, the parents will always be there to be the check and balance and make sure the school stays true to the very reasons why we send our kids there in the first place.
End of the day.. let's not forget that we co-create (and are still co-creating) the school together. ๐Ÿ™‚

I heard the P4 are going to Labrador camp and must pay $60? Is this a regular thing at P4? Seems that this school got more \"play\" than studies. Minus the many learning journeys, camp and holidays, wonder how much learning is there....

Any parent did comparison with other nearby schools, like spelling list, quality of worksheet, composition etc? Can share? I heard this school is doing very little. Also heard Math hod n principal leaving, VP is new n ......
      Very worrying....
Think this rumour about principal leaving has been going around even before Palm View started operations.. haha. Generally principals serve in a particular school for at least 6 years. So rotation of principals is a common thing and it is bound to happen sooner or later. Personally, I feel that even if by some unknown reasons.. Mr Chua is replaced by another principal next year (which is not a norm but MOE has the power to do this), what is more important is whether he has put in place clear direction of where the school is going and set the environment where the school culture and values can develop so that the incoming principal and existing team of staff can continue to carry out these plans with minimal disruption. And to me the answer is yes.

As for camps, learning journeys, etc vs worksheets and homework, for someone who advocates holistic education, experiential learning and learning life skills on top of academics, I'm glad that the school conducts such activities that are beyond the normal academic routine. In fact, to me, I find that there should be more camps.. and start earlier at P3 level perhaps.. and better still send them overseas. Going thru' these will give the kids a whole new experience and they will be able to pick up life-skills that they can never get from spelling lists and worksheets. That's why you can see more and more schools sending their kids to camps and overseas trips because there's great value in such activities. And more schools are moving away from giving too many homeworks to kids because most times most kids will come back with full marks for their homeworks which makes it impossible for teachers to gauge the weak areas of the kids.

Just a small correction about VP being new. I think it is important to note that PLVPS got a second VP (so meaning we have 2 VPs now). The 1st VP is not new at all and has been a respected figure in her current and previous attachments as well. The 'new VP' is not a replacement.. instead she in an addition to the leadership team. This I feel is a good thing because the school leaders tier is beefed up with the addition of this 2nd VP. She may be new as a VP.. but if my stalking skills are still good, I recall that she is a very experienced educator.. rising up the ranks and excelling in her various postings.

At the end of the day, different parents have different expectations. But the schol objective has always been consistent.. ie. to provide the best platform for the kids so that they can be a force for good in this world.

Disclaimer : I am not a staff of the school and this is not a paid testimonial. The above are just the personal views of a parent with 2 kids in PLVPS (and a 3rd one joining in 3 year's time).. LOL.

      cheyanne mummy:

Any parents here sending their kids to student care?

May I know which student care you use?
As this school only ends at 2pm, is there any problems so far for kids that reach the student care later than their peers?
As in do they still have time to bath and eat compared to those that reach the student care ard 1.45pm.
Any kind parents able to enlighten?
Am so worried now on how to work out the transportation for my girl. ๐Ÿคท

      Hi cheyanne mummy

      Just sharing what I know.

The student care in located inside the primary school premise. It is pro-teach. I heard Palm View teachers will be there to coach the students in the student care (the teachers will take turn). So, all the children will be from Palm View. The student care looks good. The only problem is there are limited vacancies and priority is given to lower household income family.

If school bus, I assume Anchorvale is as far as Compassvale to Palm View. Then the school bus will come at around 6.50am to pick the kids up. School starts at ard 7.45am for assembly. Lessons start at 8am. I am not sure about the timing for going home though. I intend to try out the various options when school starts for my girl.

      Cheers.

Hi parents.. it has been a while.

Just to clarify that Pro-Teach Student Care is a privately-run centre and has no affiliations with the school. Hence the Palm View teachers will not come into the centre to take turn and coach the students in Pro-Teach. The role of the student care is to ensure that all homeworks are completed. Student care teachers are not required to check and make sure the homework done is correct because it is not a tuition centre. On top of that, Pro-Teach has their own routine and enrichment activities throughout the week.

      Hope this helps.

Btw peeps, sorry if this QN has been answered before ... Is it true that school buses will cost the same whether one-way or two?

This was what we were told (by the bus op). When we signed up, we were asked which we needed. If the price was the same regardless, why bother to ask? Should just be default two-way.

We asked around our contacts and was told that this is not usual practise.

      Appreciate additional insights. Thanks.

Clarified at general office (and courtesy of two other parents there) - yes, same charge whether 1 or 2-way. Which I disagree with but will wait and see if other options appear.

Some vendors charge different rates.. but the difference could be like $10 or $20. The reason for the small insignificant difference is that even if your child opts for 1 way.. the bus vendor will still have to use the same size bus and take almost the same route both ways. Hence in terms if cost it is the same regardless. Just like full day and half day childcare.. most places the difference is rather small (not even near half the price for half day childcare).

But i feel the same way ah.. when I opt for transport 2 years ago I felt that it was rudiculoud that I had to pay almost similar to those taking 2-ways.

Not sure about the other seasoned parents.. but my advise is as follows :

      1) Take leave on the first day of school.
      2) Send your child to school and attend the talk/briefing.
      3) Go for a nice brunch with your spouse.
      4) If your child is in student care.. even better. Go catch a movie or something with your spouse. It's a rare chance for you to go on a date with your spouse to start of the new year!!!!!..

hahahahahha.. don't worry about your kids. They will know what to do.. really.. no matter how blur u may think they are.. they will do well on the first day. Teachers will be around.. the older buddies will be around (don't forget the P3 kids started off 2 years ago not having any buddies and they survived!).

      Happy dating!

LOL! ... Don't think the daddies will enjoy the date much cos the mommies will be wondering aloud about the kid every 5 mins or so ... :rotflmao: but thanks for the recommendation!

      And bless the buddies!!! :salute:

Good luck to the p1s tomorrow!

This i have to strongly disagree! It's every 3mins.. not 5mins!!!.. :rotflmao:

So \"seasoned\" parents from p2 & p3 ... any insights about what parents get to do on first day? Are we allowed to \"hang around\"? Do we get to teach the noobs how to buy food?

Feeling like it's our first day instead! :faint:

And if we don't \"chat\" again anytime today ... Happy 2015 to everyone! ๐Ÿ˜„
