Philo is compulsory as it is good preparation for GP in JC, but more for KI actually. It will give everyone an edge over the rest when we all go to JC, as by that time we would have been trained to be quick on our feet and plan rebuttals/find loopholes well.


And…philo is very very interesting okay! It’s actually very enjoyable, if you want to enjoy it! Okay I think philo is a bit boring in my sec 1 year, but as your dd go on to sec 2/3, it will be awesome as we learn about moral ethnics/logic! It will become more of a lecture style as you go on (like now sec 4 is currently learning about the history of virtue, so it’s more lecture-ish style.) It’s still awesome. Actually I liked the small class size before this year a lot better. Now it’s a whole class talking about the same issue-groups are a bit too big and very rojak and noisy, and you don’t really get the chance to speak.

P.S. a child, I know who you are. I am very very 100% sure. And… JUNIORS, DO NOT GIVE YOUR JUNIORS EVIL IDEAS! DO NOT CONTAMINATE THEIR PURE MINDS…yet>< hehe.

Yes year 2 has enriched/advanced. I think advanced is for those who got selected via the test! And enriched is made up of those who don't pass it, and some GE classes. Like i'm in enriched. There are 3 enriched+1 advanced altogether i think. Or is it 2 enriched and 2 advanced? There are also math clinic sessions for year 2s, if your math GPA is below 3.6, and the teacher calls you for it...

I think the class for Math in Sec 2 thing is a bit wrong. Like at the end of sec1, the teachers will choose the students who score well in math for this selection test at the end of the year. Then from the test, they will band 4 classes (usually is 4 or the GEP classes with the most no. of people getting into the class), and these 4 classes will be split into 4 classes again: Advanced, Enriched, RP1 and RP2. Basically advanced is the advanced class, then enriched is like still part of the advanced class, but for those who didn't get as high (might be mistaken here). Then the 2 other RP classes are just like the normal RP classes. Because only 4 classes are banded, the rest of the ppl in the other classes (that are not banded) are 'left out' in a sense. Last time they used to have special pull out classes for these people, (ie during math they are pulled out to have individual/small group lessons with a teacher who teaches them more advanced stuff) but I think now it's gone (rumor is lack of manpower or sth? don't know). But these group of people still have some 'special treatment' in the sense that they are still encouraged strongly to participate in math competitions etc.

I think so, don't know whether they changed it. But then since this year 108 is math DSA, the 4 classes might not come from the GEP classes anymore.

At the end of Sec 4, the school will encourage everyone to sign up for SAT, which will be held in January of JC 1. There is no subsidy (though you can apply for subsidy based on income I think?). As for AP I'm not so sure though.

And regarding to buying our own test tubes, it's actually because that the school test tubes are used by many people, and there may be possible traces of contaminants, which can interfere the results for the experiments, especially qualitative analysis, which is all about ppt... (and also because some people after using the school's test tubes don't clean them properly, and then just put them back into the tray, who knows?) So like it's much safer to just buy your own anyway, such that during practical exams you can be sure of your results:P

Anyway just want to ask where can you find the results of the CCA trials? Hehe I'm interested to see, but then apparently no one knows where it is (at least from my batch)

No. If you are in RA you will take extra subjects. Like If you take 2 Science RAs you will be taking 2 extra subjects. RAs now is an extra subject. GPA system is still the same. Core 5 best 2.

As you should know, the school has just changed the whole RA system starting this year, so the current sylibus is harder than previous years I guess... noting the fact that it is now counted as an extra subject.

And a correction. You do not have to do 2 SMP projects if you are in 2 RAs. In any case you will only be able to do one anyway (taking into consideration that it is already very hard to find a mentor already)...

The school will encourage you to take 1 RA only if you are offered 2. However, I don't see anything wrong with taking 2 RAs, especially because most of the people in Chem RA are in Bio too. Seems ok.

Other than a GPA 4 in the subject and overall GPA 3.6, all interested applicants have to sit for a compulsory test at the end of Year 2. I understand that there may be an interview. Are interviews for the so-called borderline cases only? I believe there were some who actually got in without an interview. Is this true?

Is it also compulsory to have taken part in and won some science related competitions in order to to gain entry into Science RAs? Other than ICAS, what other openings are there? Are there pupils without Science competition wins in RA? I should think so, right?

yes most of the time the interviews are for the borderline cases. However sometimes if you are really good then they will also ask you to go for interview to recommend you for other awards/stuffs etc. but this is a lot more rare. Most people who are in science RA dont go for interviews.

It's not complusory to take part or won anything. They dont really bother with comeptitions at the moment, cos there are few competitions targeting at sec 2s and below. So there are no openings, in a sense. The most important thing is to participate actively in class and get a good teacher's recommendation. It is even more important than the selection test itself.

And the selection test is not very difficult, they test you more on skills than on how much you know, though it will be a lot easier if you have basic knowledge of all the different topics in sec 3.

and GAT is not about math and sciences. there's no words in a test. It's more of a test on analytical skills and how well you can see patterns.

Like a sample question can be: circle, square, circle, square, (what comes next?)

I’m not wrong, the students are streamed on reporting day (aka p1 orientation), where they will be given a few worksheets to do, and then the teachers will collect back and mark. I know cos i was involved in it 2 years ago. Basically i think there’s compo (easy one), some join the dots puzzle and others.

The school’s academic record is not exactly very good, (neither can I say that it’s very bad obviously. It’s kind of a fact. but then they just changed principal so i dont know whether there’s a change). and the school focuses on arts and cca more than academic excellence. yup. CCAs wise there are quite a lot to choose form, and there are still occasional activities such as kayaking and rock climbing.

You are supposed to be in your primary school uniform. You also need to bring along any letters that the MOE gave out, like the one offering you EESIS scholarships and etc. You have to be there as there will be a lot of forms given out, like student particulars, offer for HMT and whether you got selected for any 3rd Lang that you applied. If everything flows fine, you will be able to go home at about 1pm +/-.
