Yes, I agree the Signpost is not effective. I attended too and the instructor is not good at giving effective suggestions. And the videos they screened are all staged, not realistic. The other Kkh course I attended is better, can see effect and they use real examples.

So far the Kkh ST and OT I hv seen are ok, of course they are not
as detail as private ones. But my point is since u say u can't afford private therapiats, then Kkh ones are the next best option rather then totally no therapy to guide u.

Now I m also trying to get my bow overcome the fear of taking the MRT. He was terrified and trembling when we first brought him to take the train. Is our bad as we hardly expose him to public transport. This is One immediate goal that I hv for him. Hope he will overcome this fear soon

Did your son's SLT talk about rating like Average, mild, moderate & severve compare to his peer at his age? what you think of those words ending with \"ing\" will its confuse them? now i only teach him like pour rather then pouring.. i dun understand, things like action words, if i ask him to pour , he will pour, when i say sleep he know is sleep, when i say drinks water, he know wat is drinks, i say eat he knows too and i say bite he will also bite..i ask him to jump he will jump too, & etc...

when come to pix showing a kid eating, if SLT ask him what are this boy doing, my son duno how to say.. but i never teach him these b4, cuz i jus wan to work on his compliances never think this is needed too...

which course u attend at KKH is good, i tot they only have signpost & PECS only.

i think your son is not ASD. he is so good.. my son in 3 months time will be 3yo.very scare & kan cheong..

Double E, your son sure will overcome the fear of taking pubic transport.. is it becos of the sound?... my son last time is afraid of hair dryer he has already overcome, as he has more things to focus now as he is more awareness.. but another thing he still very scare, it is the vacumm cleaner.

Did your OT teach u how to let him overcome his fear of taking public transport. In the crowded bus my son will tends to touch pple bag if their bag interests him hiaz... so embrassing...

My son walk he never observe the crowds and keep on hiting on pple.. everywhere when i with him i have to keep saying sorry to passer by or bus pedestrian :'(.. some very fierce wan to scold or beat my son.. so scary.. esp those old old aunty... maybe she think my son did on purpose..

oh ya Double E, i know your son too knows all colours, jus wan to check with you, if you give him a red car, and if you ask him wat color is it, does he answer you red? my son use to tell me red color car but now he no more cuz he is too obses with the car or other objects , so when i ask him wat color is the objects he will not answer me although he already know how to recognise all colors...

why ah? any idea?

My boy has mild ASD, Doc already said so, so I won't go fight against it anymore, just continue to work on what is needed.

My ST didn't mention anything about mild, moderate etc, just say his speech is delayed. As for words ending with 'ing', sometimes my boy says it, sometimes don't.

As for colours, yes, he can answer them.

On public transport,I sure hope he can overcome the fear. And last week I brought him to take cable car to Sentosa, he totally freaked out and was trembling too. So poor thing. But we managed to calm him down after about 5mins or so.

Aiyo Helplessmum, if you don’t bring your boy to the therapist, how they do a ‘custom-made’ plan for him? They must have enough time to know him enough to come up with an individual plan for him mah.

No lah, we train him and keep asking him What’s this Whats that, then slowly he picked it up.

Now I am trying to teach him to describe what he can find in a park, so tough.

Your boy’s condition is very similar to my boy.


During song and dance session in school, sometimes he will just observe or only do the last part of the song, but at home, he will sing the whole song to us.
My boy also makes up words if he can’t find a word to describe what he wants.

But I think, you should still send him for OT and ST at HPB while waiting for placement in EIPIC centre. I think it will do him more good than harm.

Actually, your boy seems to be doing ok at his age and I read from earlier thread that you mentioned he will ask other kids at playground to play with him. ASD kids usually will not initiate play with peers but your boy is doing that.

Was he formally diagnosed as ASD by kkh? What signs did he display to warrant the diagnosis?

Haha, yah even for scissors, u have to sit by his side and watch him cut, of course cannot leave him alone with sharp objects. Get those round tip ones from popular.

Here are some other things that I do with my boy as part of OT, 30 mins each session each day or every other day is good enough since is hard to catch their attention.

- Sorting
Take out spoons and folks and ask him to sort accordingly. Or get coloured beads and ask him to sort according to colours.

- Strengthening the thumb for writing
did you notice anything about his strength? can you open the lid of a box or turn a bottle cap? IF he can, good, then maybe he has less fine motor issues, if no, you can train him by practicing it with clothes peg (small ones), get him to open the peg with his thumb and index finger and try clipping on something, do this over and over again until he can do it.

- Threading
buy threading toys from toys r rus, it comes with a thin robe and some wooden cubes with holes. Ask him to thread from one cube to another.

- Playdoh
make shapes, roll the dough

- Playground
Bring him to outdoor playgound, play with the slides, let him sit on swings, play with sand (build sand castle)

- Cutting
I never thought of letting my boy to try using the scissors until my OT told me that is good for fine motor training. I started practising with him and after about 2 weeks, he can cut paper strips. Now progress to cutting playdough.

Anyway, I am bringing by boy to another private therapy centre for assessment next week, see what else I can do for him in the area of speech and social skills.

From what u describe, your boy is already very good. My boy also can’t answer the how and why questions, these two questions are very advance for them. And u ask your boy where he went yesterday? that’s too difficult for him seriously. Remember, he is not yet 3 years old.

I think u need to lower your expectations, sometimes u will get pleasant surprises.

All OT or ST sessions be it private or government subsidized are about an hour at most, so what HPB is giving u is what u get at private too, the only difference is U can have at least 1x a week at private or even more if you can afford, whereas for HPB, you need to wait longer. But duration at each session is the same.

OT and ST, whatever therapy it is, cannot give up half way so easily. Must carry on and tell the therapists the issues u face with your kid.

My boy is not what he is with just a few sessions. He has been on therapy for more than a year and EIPIC for 8 mths before we some results.

Like u mentioned, if you can’t afford private OT or ST, then government subsidized OT and ST is the way to go. U can teach your boy yourself, true, but u need the therapists to help u see what’s wrong with your kid and teach you the correct method to do so. And many times, the therapists also trial and error because no one method is suitable for all kids and they need to get to know your kid more to be able to find out what is his real issues before they can derive an individual plan for him. I really think u should resume your boy’s sessions with HPB.

And your boy is verbal right? U should consider yourself blessed because he is verbal, wait till you see kids who are non-verbal even at 4 years old and the behaviour they display to get attention. Furthermore, your boy is still young, not even 3 yet, so make full use of this window to teach him and expose him. By sending him to therapist, you are also giving a chance for him to expose to other adults and train his compliance and instruction listening skills.
