    • RE: All About Bullying

I have my own fair share of bullying when I was in school.

You either get bullied by students bigger than you, richer than you, or more popular than you.

Luckily, it worked out for me cause I will hide in the library to escape from the bullies or digs into books to make myself too boring for them to continue their taunts.

Bullies are like lions on the prowl, they always bully the weakest lamb in the herd.

On hindsight, having an open relationship with your kid will help.
Try to send him for leadership courses so he can develop more self-confidence for himself to avoid making himself an easy target for the bullies.

    • RE: All About Working With Children Who Are Weak Academically

I used to tutor kids and have my fair share of hyperactive kids, academically weak kids and kids who seem to lack the motivation to study.

I am not a motivational coach but here are some methods I have implemented that seems to work for me, at least.

It works so well that one of the parents tears up with joy when their kids finally got into Express stream cause the previous tutors they hired couldn't even get him to sit still for the entire tuition lesson.

      1. Try to gain the trust of the child that you are trying to teach.

Find a common ground that you can use to build rapport with the kid. This is by far the MOST IMPORTANT step before you even start to teach and help your kid. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Understand your kid is a unique human being with his/her own needs and emotion too. If he/she is interested in a particular game, try to take extra effort to learn about it and used it to build bridges to him/her. The more bridges or similarities you build, the easier it is to get him/her to do something that you want him/her to do. Show empathy and understand and meet their needs first.

      2. Explain the rationale behind a task.

Long goes are the days when you can flog the kid to get him to study or do homework. Nowadays, they want a reason behind why they are doing something. Always put their benefits first when you explain why you need to get it done.

For example, \"if you do your homework now, you won't have to stay back in school tomorrow to finish it\".

Try not to emphasis too much on the reward to get things done as they will expect more rewards to get the same thing done.

      3. Be generous with your praise.

This works well for kids who suffer a lack of motivation to study. Whenever they finish a question, try to encourage them to move to the next one. A simple \"high 5\" can go a lot of miles in their confidence department. If they are stuck with a particular question, try to break down the problem into smaller pieces so it is easier for them to work on.

For example, if you are solving a math problem, start working from the first line and move downwards instead of getting overwhelmed by the thesis-like question.

      4. Build a habit with your child.

Once you have developed step 1 to 3 as follows. Try to make it a habit to do it with your child no matter how busy you are. For example, I will always go to work early so I can leave earlier to spend some time with my kid to work on the homework together.

You can also work with your spouse and see how both of you can complement each other so you can spend more time with the kid with the homework, while your spouse can manage other tasks for you.

      5. Bond with your child.

At the risk of contradicting point 2, bring your child out for a break as a reward for working hard for the entire year instead of constantly rewarding him/her for small things that they have done.

Get a reward that is not monetary or materialistic in nature. For example, paying a visit to the botanic garden, cycling on the beach or spending time together in a tent definitely beats rewarding the latest iPhone or going to that European trip.

From there, they will understand the importance of hard work and only they truly benefit from it. This helps them to get joy and satisfaction from their hard work instead of expecting a financial transaction for their hard work.

I will stop writing now. I definitely have more methods but these are good enough to get your children started if they are facing any problem with studying.

    • RE: How much household income is enough?

it depends on your needs and how many children you have.

If you are frugal, 3-4k/month should be enough.

Hi, I am staying in Simei and my boy is going to Nanyang Primary School next year. Apparently NYP's school bus do not cover Simei. Hoping to arrange for a private bus - advantage: shorter commute time. However, it would cost more - depending on how many people I can gather. Interested, let me know....[/quote]
How do you manage to enrol your boy in Nanyang Primary School when you are staying in Simei?
