    • RE: All About Flu and Cough

      sushiking:
I've searched high and low for a good physician for my 2.5yrs old son persistent cough. It's already more than 4 months. I've been to many PDs, hospitalized 2 times due to pneumonia. Went to Chong Hwa TCM 许医师 5 times(continuous treatment more than a month), EYS 黄医师, Qi 医师 total 5 times (continuous treatment more than a month)but his cough still not recovering. I am not expecting a miracle but at least I am looking at slowly getting better and not worsened/unchanged. Even get a tuina for him too. Manuka Honey UMF5+ as well twice a day. Really frustrated and despair. Hope anyone who has a really good Physician to recommend that can cure my son. Thanks in advanced!!

Note: My son eat very simple food, pork porridge with green vege, green vege soup with rice, wholemeal bread, karihome goat milk and warm water (since born). He doesn't know what is sweet, what is soft drink at all. Never have tidbits as well. Night time already changed his clothes when he is sweating, no aircon for more than 6 months already. Only low speed fan that is blowing on the wall not even to him. No soft toys, no carpet and my room being cleaned up every day by my maid . Bedsheet being changed every single day. I'm really dun know what to do, please help!

      Hihi,
While i read this, i totally can feel your helplessness. Ever since my son was born, i nvr had a full night sleep. He will wake up crying at least twice in the night, not for his milk feed but because of mucus backflow.

My then 4 yr old son has severe sinus. He sneezes frequently & mucus will backflow at night. When the backflow is serious, it develops into a cough the next day. A vicious cycle with running nose at night & the COMBO(running nose+cough) in the morning.

Once, he coughed for 6 months. I did X-ray, scope & blood test. We visited doctors (fr Yishun -> Bukit Timah-> Pasir Ris->Orchard), 3 different TCMs, pediatricians from Mt Alvernia & Thomson Medical Hospital, scope in Gleneagle Hospital & even resorted to “asking gods”! Nothing really helps. He was given more antibiotics & 2 different inhalers. After 6 mths of medication, he lost weight, has black stains on all teeth with a pale greenish face. After 6 tormenting mths he did recover from that bad cough but because of his sinue->mucus backflow, he is always coughing. Thus, he sees GPs every twice a month.

I came to know this famous TCM place in the East & gave it a last shot. Surprisingly, the medicine seems to work for him. No nose bleeding as he often has nose bleeding after chinese medication. Tuina works for both his fever & cough well. His severe sinus due to inflammation has improved with their cream. I went there weekly as I see improvement. Subsequently after he recover, i visit there once every two weeks to maintain. Then slowly drag to once a mth to build up his immunity. But he is still having sinus.... but manageable. Finally he doesn't wake up every night.

My turning point is when i went Taiwan in April 2014. For once, he never had a single night of mucus backflow or cough! But the night that we touched down, he had sinus again! I concluded his trigger is most likely the air in Singapore. Therefore, i wish to cut down on the tcm medications as well.

Then i chanced upon essential oils from my fren too. I have now use eos for more than a year alr & my son nvr visit any GPs this past 1 yr +!

Yes, he did fall sick a few times...fever & cough...But i combat it with eos & tcm. There was once the fever was as high as 39.5. As i think it is too dangerous and wish to bring down fever faster, I fed him paracetomol(brand new bottle fr last year). Then i just keep oiling him. He recovered in 4 days with just two doses of paracetomol + oiling.

So dun despair & press on. Keep trying to find out what exactly is the trigger. Only when u know the trigger then u could avoid & combat it.
Btw, my tcm did advised to avoid all cold stuff+egg white+fried food+milk & avoid direct wind(fan, aircon or even wind from balcony) blowing at child. If you need to give milk after 7pm, possible to dilute the milk then fed baby some water to wash down the milk residue? Actually some leafy veg are quite cooling too. Main thing is eat in moderation.

      Trust your mummy instincts. Jiayou!
      Sorry for the long post.

    • RE: Can we take leave during school term for vacation

It is not encourage to be absent from school during school term despite there is little teaching or school work to be done during the last wk. Usually teachers will issue Holiday homework or class bonding activities during the last wk.

However, if it is a must to be away from school during school term. Please inform the form teacher in advance & provide a letter. In that way, teacher can issue the holiday homework to your child first.

      Hi Mummies and daddy,

I have intended to enroll my son in Dynamic EIP. My son has gone for assessment and their recommendation is 1-1 speech therapy for his speech and oral motor development and a suitable class if he were enrolled in EIP. My son is 2 1/2 yr old.

Any mummies' LOs there? Can you sit in for first 2-3 classes? or just send him and left?

Btw, they are very slow in responding my email. Always have to remind them. V pissed off.

      TIA.
Hi, my son has been with Dynamics for sometime. Usually they are quite responsive. Try calling instead. Is faster. Btw i notice the receptionist was training an unfamilar face last Sat.

Ever since DS has been diagnosed with autism, i started him on 1 occupational and speech theraphy session per wk for the past 3 mths. Though the therapists have gd feedback and said he is improving. But i don't seem to see much difference @home. I heard that some GFCF diet works for some autistic children. Anyone has try b4? While searching for Gluten free & wheat free soya sauce, i found an article on R1H2 virus and Nano Engery Booster Patch theraphyhttp://http://www.natures-glory.com/sub_NEB_details.asp?ProductSID=5540&CatSID=157 . Any parents that have already started your child on this? Any feedback?

      hi,
agree with nugget - not easy program or regime to keep to...
in DS' experience it seemed to work. I kept to it for 1+ year. in fact i started it 2-3 months before therapy cos since I was on waitlist, I figured I might as well do something. At that time DS was only 2 so it was easy to remove all gluten and caesin from his diet - I baked my own bread/hard biscuits for biting, made my own pasta, switched to rice milk, made own playdough for him to play etc etc.
Within that 2 months, he started pointing (never did that before!) and seemed to be able to focus on my face longer (i was super KS then, timed down reactions and kept notes to compare). Was also aware of strangers for first times. This happened after diagnosis and before therapy started.

Pros of diet (for DS only - can't say for anyone else)
      - slept better and longer through the nights. even till now, DH & I both feel that his sleep during his GFCF days were the deepest and most settled
      - seemingly less cranky, smiled more often at me too (that was then.. now he laughs and smiles non-stop for a 7yo!)

      Cons:
      - super expensive
      - whole lifestyle change. even family went GFCF. The rationale behind diet is that any gluten/caesin traces can cause havoc on the child. So it's recommended that cooking utensils, pots etc have to be solely for GFCF usage. DH & i HATED that period of time & would sneak out to eat... but we ourselves did experience very good health too. nowadays we try to do fasts & avoid wheat once in a while
      - not practical for a growing child who has interactions with other children. esp if child's tastes is also established. DS at that time was mainly eating porridge so that was easy - the tough part was switching to rice milk and adding rice bran with nutrients to ensure milk was filling and nutritious.

Plenty of GFCF choices around nowadays. I would say it's no harm trying but quite tough & requires whole family to be on board. DS stopped at nearly 4yo cos by then his focus was stable and instead he seemed to be responding more to therapy. HTHs

To add: personally DS's \"improvement\" did not really happen immediately after therapy starts. It took him another 2yrs after diagnosis to speak. After which it seemed everything kinda fell into place - with spurts, plateaus and even dips... it's a continual process. Be patient & resilient and if possible, have someone continuously & religiously work with child everyday the therapy exercises. In DS's case, the consistency worked for him

Thank you Woggles & Nugget. I think i might try to remove the milk first then soya sauce. Coz i found replacement for these two items. But for bread, cakes and cheese... anyone has substitutes/ recipes? i don't mind baking for him but the recipes that i found online consists of so many different types of flour....i dunno which one is the best combi but i bought a box of gluten free, diary free ready-mix flour from NTUC Finest. i hope it taste ok as my boy is really a fussy eater.

Just to share an embarrassing moment last fri. I took a train w my boy and was teaching him abt the vehicles i spotted below us... Car, Lorry, bus etc....
He was enjoying it and echoing after me, car....Still in very good mood, he said you fair, you fat, you fart. i dunno what is he trying to saying as i couldn't make out the words but they certainly sound like fat & fart. I have not taught him such words nor were these present in his dvds. I seriously have no idea where he learn these words or was he trying to refer to other words. Embarrassing, i quickly cover his mouth before another F word comes out!

    • RE: All About Autism

Thanks all. I did suspect abt his behaviour one yr ago but i was trying to cope with the lost, finances, followed by my dog’s illness. I finally came out of my shell and is seeking KKH help. Sad to say, this pre-assessment in KKH prove that i was right. I’m sad, tired and afraid. For the sake of my son, i have to find theraphists for him asap while i continue to queue @ KKH for his 2nd tests.

While searching the forum for recommendations, there are so many pte clinics in the mkt. I do understand that different kids perform differently under the same theraphists. Can anyone recommended tested and proven speech therapists to me? I want to send him one asap so that there’s slight improvement before his 2nd tests in KKH.
