Meal coupons from big companies are safe to buy. I try and avoid the smaller ones as when many people buy the coupons, they cant deliver their end of the meal and I ended up having to constantly call and try and reserve a place. The same goes for the hair and beauty places. Except that im more skeptical for the beauty ones as I experienced very hard selling at a facial place I went.


But i have had good experiences with products so far. I bought a Kindle and some misc stuff before.

For my daughter's tutor, although she is experience and NIE-trained, she charged at relatively low ($38/hr) as my sec 4 daughter had been with her for 4 years (since Primary 6). However, she told me that because of her experience and experience over the years, she will generally ask for a slightly higher rate compared to my daughter's.

wow thats an amazing rate she is giving you. I used to do private tuition when i just left MOE , now i teach at centres and tuition coordination on the side and I have not come across a trained teacher charging so low. I guess it must be because she feels comfortable with your daughter and they are both used to each other learning/teaching style. You are lucky to find such a good and nice tutor :rahrah:

This depends on the teacher. I am an ex primary school teacher and back when I used to have private classes, I charged 50/hr for lower primary.
However, I know many other teachers who charge 40/hr. I think that it depends on the teacher's experience too. Non NIE trained or currently in NIE teachers are cheaper of course. Current and ex teachers are slightly higher and HODs and subject heads may charge more.

I think, safe to say for at least NIE trained 35-40 is a good number to start for lower primary. Might be lower if the teacher lives near you and its easier for him/her to get to your place.

I agree. I was with MOE (primary) for a number of years and only recently quit to teach privately. I have had many pupils at Primary 1 who are not able to read yet. At primary one, they are straight away expected to be able to read. In fact after the first few months, they are expected to complete some form of written expression by themselves already. For Math, I have come across pupils who are not good at counting from 1-10. It gets very difficult for them to catch when the school quickly moves on to number bonds. In these cases, private tutoring is important to help the child cope. Once he/she is coping and moving along with the class at a reasonable pace. Private lessons can stop.

I agree that its important to check the school website.
This might not really be related to the topic, but I would like to share so that parents wont be scammed.

My husband is a teacher and does not do tuition at all. He teaches in a popular school. About 2 years ago he got a call (through the school phone) from a tuition coordinator informing him that there was a guy applying for tuition jobs using his name! Imagine our shock! This only came to light when the coordinator was doing her research and came across the school website and realised that his profile picture did not look like the one at the school website at all. I wonder how many people he bluffed.

Anyway, just sharing.

I have some experience teaching at Tony Buzan. I was there for some time and I have taught the writing classes before. I find that coming from a teacher’s POV, its not bad. They have to produce an essay a week. Thats much more than what schools give them.

Each written expression requires them to complete a mindmap first.In my personal opinion, I find that not all pupils benefit from drawing mindmaps. Some pupils are ok with planning by other means so they may find drawing the mindmaps tedious. The environment there is not as stressful as some other learning centres too.

This is just my POV. Not speaking up for them or against them.
