RE: All About Math Olympiad Training & Questions
iwork:
For question 2, shouldn't the answer be (8 x
These are the MOCK RI contest questions.Wgh2005:
Hi, please help on the below question?
1. What is the first time, to the nearest minute, after 4.00pm, that the minute hand of a clock will overtake the hour hand?
2. A palindrome is a positive integer whose digits are the same when read forward or backward. For example, 2882 is a 4-digit palindrome and 59195 is a 5-digit palindrome. There are pairs of 4-digit palindrome whose sum is a 5-digit palindrome. One such pair is 2882 and 9339. How many such pairs are there? (You may disregard the order, that is, 9339 and 2882 are considered the same pair as the above-mentioned.)
3. Given that 3 to the power of 20, which denotes multiplying 3 by itself 20 times, is a 10-digit number x48678440y, find x+y.
4. There are seven points on a piece of paper. Exactly four of these points are on a straight line. No other line contains more than two of these 7 points. Three of the seven points are selected to form the vertices of a triangle. How many such triangles are possible?
Thank you.
The answer
1. 4:22pm
Hint: work out 1 minute, the angle moved by minute hand and hour hand. Then look at the position (and the angle with respect to '12' marking) of hour hand and minute hand at 4.00pm. Finally work out the angle for each case.
2. 36
Hint: the 5-digit number must start and end with digit 1.
3. 4
Hint: work on 9^10 instead of 3^20. Find the last digit pattern for 9^n to get y. Then use divisibility rule for 9 to find the first digit x. You should be 3 + 1 = 4.
4. 31
Hint: The difference between the number of triangles formed with 7 points and number of triangles formed with 4 points = 35 - 4 = 31.
Thanks.

/ 2 = 32? Assuming the two numbers are xyyx and abba, There are only 8 ways for x+a=11 and y+b=11.
Thanks for any clarification. -

Rio:
Contrary to NMOS, NUSH released the names/schools of those who qualified for their science olympiad practical round. They are inconsistent.Bochapmum3:
Release of results to go into 2nd round is only through the school? Not over the website? I guess if no news from school today, means not qualified for 2nd round..
I called NUSH to clarify n they said starting from this year onwards, due to the PDPA rulings, NUSH will not release the results of 1st round on website so as to protect the privacy of the students. However they will still publish the name of the award winners fr 2nd round.
I understand many schools might not released the results as yet. My son's school will only release the result tmr, so there's still hope

blur_mum:
Compare the SASMO P3 and P4 results, there are many who are ranked high that did not get into GEP or were not from the GEP. Those who do well in Math Olympiad would have an advantage, but you still need to score well (above a certain baseline) in the English and General Ability (IQ) sections. The opposite is also true - strong in English but not in Maths.Hi, any co-relation between students who are prep for math olympiad and gep results?

You should notice that every third day, he's one seat behind. So 135/3 = 45, i.e. he's 45 seats behind. There are 7 seats, 45/7 = 6 remainder 3. Therefore he's 3 seats behind, i.e. seat E.00skyblue00:
E is correct
Hi can share what were the steps to arrive at E? -
RE: All About GEP
With regards to an earlier post about not many successful GEP cases showcased, you have to understand that the GEP was started in 1984 for 0.25% of the cohort and only grow to 1.0% in the 1990s. The bulk of the GEP students would be under 40 years old. Rest assured that you will start seeing many of them taking key positions in the civil service and corporate scene when they enter their 40s and 50s. The 4th generation leaders did not experience the GEP, but the 5th and 6th would be possibly. If they can unearth another LKY in the last 30 odd years, the GEP education is paid for multiple times.
The following speech by Tharman in 2004 highlighted some of the Geppers' academic achievements.
