Estéema:
It’s not much of meaning just to look at high scores. So long as your child put in effort to work hard, we shld be proud of our kids & congratulate those who had achieved greater scores - however it’s done. I’m sceptical abt knowing too much.

In our journey, I’ve been guilty of looking over the shoulders of these high achievers with yearly awards as highest achiever in cohort for all subjects & those many consistent achievers of high grades. Then I woke up one day to resolve that I’ll be happier if my kids are a little less high scorers but are all rounders with life skills.

I was shaken when one of my kid’s peer scored high but had never really known how to relate to most other peers & adults. Very reserved & quiet. This one the mum coached personally at home. Reads voraciously but totally alienates himself fr other kids (maybe see others as not 开窍 type to mingle with). Eventually the only one amongst peers chose Raffles route.

Ano had 3 Chinese tuition to enable high >90 but no time to do anything else due to all subj with TLL, no CCAs or other interests. Mother forbade any playdates, etc. Poor kid. Heard he got more emotional in Year 1 and cld not work with teammates on projects.

Btw, both are very well fed & fat kids.

I’m happy when my kids hv a variety of interests, able to mingle with frds & learn to give & take. There again, maybe someone might think my kids are Jack (no not my chil’s name, lol) of all & special in none.
Esteema, I agree with you. It's so tempting to compare with those around. There will always be people who are super smart AND kind AND sporty AND world class musicians. We decided last year to tell our son \"what you achieve will be a result of your effort. You have to decide if it's worth getting 10 more points at the cost of less reading, drumming, training time.

What parent doesn't hope that their child will be multihyphenated top student? But if they have no space, no time to just vegetate and be bored, then how will they have the time to discover who they are? Guess I'll just have to cross my fingers and que sera sera

Quick statistics lesson:

MEAN is the average. So the scores of all the students who were accepted into the school divided by the number of students
MODE is the number that has the most repeats. With the T-score this is not really relevant as there are invisible decimal places that make the numbers more unique and even if there is a score with the most repeats it doesn't really signify anything in this case
MEDIAN is the middle value, i.e. if you line up all the students who got in according to their T scores, the student who is right in the middle of this lineup is the one with the median score.

So taking Nanyang Girls for example.. COP 264.Highest 285..median 268..does it mean with 301 girls in the cohort..150 girls scored between 264 and 268 .1 girl 268 ( to make it simple) then another 150 girls scored between 269 and 285?

Yes, except you have to remember the affiliation bit. So if intake is say 300, and say 55 come from NYPS and make the grade and another 60 are offered DSA spots, then based on a COP of 264 and median of 268, it would mean that 300 - 55-60=185/2 --> the 93rd girl to qualify had a T score of 268. 92 girls scored between 264 and 268, and 92 other girls scored between 268 and 285.

BTW, last year highest score in my son's school (and I suspect in Singapore) was a girl who got 29something (?) +3. He's very sure. DSA-ed so not in the stats.

On this off topic of boys and girls, I used to think that it was better for my son to be in an all boys primary school where teachers understood that boys have shorter attention spans and do better with more physical (tactile) learning. So he spent his first 3 years in an all-boys school. Then he moved to a co-ed school, and while seems to be the case in our experience that teachers generally like the girls better than the boys (who wouldn’t!), my son came to appreciate the reliability of having girl classmates to check homework with and remind him of the things that flew instantly out of his head.

Neat:
Hi

As the COP is lower this year, does it mean that it is higher chance to get into NYGH with minimum requirement score of 264?

Regards.
I think that really depends on how many girls from NYPS made the 250 cut off, + how many DSA places have been taken. If the number of 250s and over from NYPS went down, then possibly the COP might come down. And what your daughter's score is really (with decimal points). Thats alot of things we don't know. But based on last year's COP, she stands a decent chance of getting in. And if she doesn't then she should be able to get into any other school of her choice anyways, so congrats!
My son takes Japanese at the MOELC at Newton. I believe Malay is somewhere in the east... not in school. The boys can drop 3rd Lang if they choose to. I think the only thing to note that if it's not done by a certain date (hv to check) then the student will have to take the exam and the marks obtained wd be recorded.

HCL can also be dropped - this one at the end of the year I believe. Also I think the boys must get a minimum mark to continue studying it in the next year

Malay should be at MOELC in Bishan

I believe Indonesian is at MOELC in Bishan. But thought I recalled Malay being taught in some school in the East. Anyway, as I get older, my memory becomes less reliable so I dare not say this as fact...
Whoops just checked with my son - Malay is at MOELC Bishan too. Sorry, emoh, you're right!
