    • RE: Secondary School Literature

I am looking for literature guide books for my child who has done badly for his literature exam. He is using "Classroom Plays" by Stella Kon and "Singapore Short Stories" by Robert Yeo.

Is there tuition class for literature based on the books the child is using in school?

      Thank you.

    • Information booklet on "choosing a secondary school"

Any advice as to how I can obtain a copy of this booklet? Thought it will be a good guide to flip through but could not find it on the internet. No friends with kids who took PSLE in 2011 😞 :thankyou:

I still can’t comprehend the STELLAR method of teaching for English. CASCO Zoom n Vocab was also used for P5 last year and spelling was tested based on it. Other than that, I do not see much being tested in the SA papers. Most of the time, kids are made to do worksheets and past years’ papers. I feel there is insufficient practice on Compo writing. Also couldn’t comprehend why the school does not return Paper 1 to the kids so they can reflect on their mistakes. I was told it is a ruling by school and teachers are also not allowed to tell you how the child had scored in Paper 1 during exam.

Some teachers do not collect workbooks from P3. Imagine carrying the CASCO Vocab, Conqueror Maths to school daily.

My kids are in p4 and p6 respectively next year. They used to have the PTC session but with the new principal this year, the school eliminated it. I managed to email the form teachers to solicit feedback and fortunately, they are rather responsive. Having said so, am still In favor of PTC 😄

I always the there is difference between face to face meetings as opposed to phone call or emails. Besides, PTC allows parents to gather feedback from all teachers in one go. My opinion is that such communication platform should not have been removed.

The school should probably also review the attitude of the vendors they appoint. Went to purchase books yesterday and saw the vendor quarreling with a parent. The vendor insisted the student was running away from payment and the parent was fuming mad. Despite the parent reiterating that she should not used the word ‘trying to run away’, she repeated at least 5-6 times. Gosh! School probably can’t control this though.

Chanced upon this thread and wanted to check what parents think of school doing away with the half yearly Parents-Teachers meeting.

    • RE: Joanne Choo Language Centre - Discussion

Thanks for sharing. My child is in the P5 class. Unlike his previous writing class, he was given a model compo and the teacher taught vocab and highlight good phrases from the passage. Kids were then told to write a compo and submit for marking. Students are expected to do a draft two if there were too many errors in the first draft submitted. He was in the class for more than half a year but I did not see vast improvements hence I thought of trying out Joanne Choo. Testimonials in her website are convincing and I was told these were written by students during class.

Not sure if it applies to other schools, the school he is in does not allow students to take back their Paper 1 and were not told how much they scored for the paper. We can only gauge from the total score in the report book. I thought this is weird rule as it doesn't allow me as parent to view how he did for his compo which takes up a huge percentage.

Your DD is already doing so well but there is always no harm to prepare her for the years ahead. 🙂
