    • RE: All About Grooming & Encouraging Good Reading Habits

I choose award winning books for my children, and download vocabulary comprehension materials from http://www.berygoodbooks.com

We sit down and talk about the books and they often surprise me with their inspirational thoughts.

    • RE: All About Grooming & Encouraging Good Reading Habits

I’ve been sending my kids Reading Plus, and sometime I buy worksheets from various sources to check reading comprehension. I don’t believe reading any books is helpful. Keep on reading doesn’t necessarily mean they do understand.

    • RE: English Assessment Books

I think students should read good books instead of going through good assessment books. My son has been an avid reader… and he scores A*, and doesn’t have any assessment.

Occasionally, I download the past test papers.

oxford reading tree is good. They can read the book because the black things are letters and the white things are paper, but do they really understand?

They need to learn the concept of cause and effect, and they should be able to elaborate how a story progresses.
Oxford reading tree books are perceptibly simple, but there are many things parents can ask to initiate their cognitive development.

    • RE: Horror Stories - Tutors

A friend of mine once hired a math tutor.

He was an excellent tutor until he introduced investment opportunity.
Trusting him, my friend introduced another mother. These naive Korean mothers… invested $50,000 all together.
      The teacher disappeared.
and he is nowhere to be found.
      it happened 2006.

    • RE: All About Working With Children Who Are Weak Academically

      Sigh…

This is a matter of understanding one’s own responsibility. You can be forgiving to others but you really have to apply a tight measure on yourself.
Not doing well is not very important, but not doing her best is a problem…
Encouraging your daughter is very very essential, but you should help her set her priorities straight.
You might help her so she can openly talk about her study pattern, and one by one… you, as an adult or as a formal student, may be able to find some ways to improve.

    • RE: English Assessment Books

I do not particularly buy any assessment books, but my child scored 93 in English.

He got distinction on his UNSW English assessment.

He reads many books, but there are worksheets that guids him to read properly.
I download worksheets from http://www.Readinga-z.com for non fiction (This thing comes together with printable books), and berygoodbooks.com for his fiction book. (you can either purchase or borrow from any local libraries -- The cheapest site i can find in Singapore is bookdepository)

Both sites offer comprehensions and other critical response questions which certainly engage your child to think further.

Before exam, I download free test papers from various sources.

    • RE: Math enrichment necessary for child already do well in math?

I don’t think it is necessary.

I am in the same shoes, and i have never put my son in a single tuition class.

He startes as an ok in math student and he actually scored highest last year (p4).

Many of my friends (mostly Koreans) suggested that i should put him in tuition class so he can learn Algebra.

I believe if teachers do not teach Algebra, there should be legitimate reasons why…

There were many questions which i could solve easily using simple algebra method, but i didn’t bother.

It seems like he understands the basic concepts, and i want him to extend his critical thinking rather than techniques.

Getting A* is important, and yes!! it would put your child in a favorable position, but the learning journey doesn’t stop at PSLE.

My son scores below 95, and he enjoys his math work. If he learns Algebra when it is the right time… i am sure he would be stronger than other students because he will have built a very strong math foundation.

i recommend you to try this…
i buy one assessment book… only one. and let my child solve the problem ALONE. He cries and shows that he is fraustrated.

I am sorry, but i let my child ponder and suffer.

Your child will not only acquire the important concepts and methods to apply them, but also, most importantly, your child would gain confidence. " I can do it!!! "

      Good luck!
