Comp Sci/Info Comms is in fashion with the Smart Nation initiative and the hype about Big Data and Deep Learning. Hearsay DSO / GovTech offers up to $5K for candidates with good Hons in the relevant field.
Which reminds me, there's also the start-ups. I'm not sure how much \"salary\" they earn, but if their project is good, I won't be surprised they get bought over by a larger firm, and end up earning more than everyone. This was something from the NUS grads awhile back https://www.spring.gov.sg/NewsEvents/ITN/Pages/Crowdfunding-catches-on-Shooting-for-the-stars-20160708.aspx

If the student has the guts to go out and try, entrepreneurship is what we sorely lack in Singapore now. There are a lot of seeding funds/grants available for these projects recently.

heard from a friend, that RV standard and results dropping these past few years.

Sorry to say I have no idea about this. But just got lil scared.

what is your opinion about this?

DD is just year 1 this year and enjoying her free life so far. She will start having tests from this week. so wondering if I need to pull back her slack to maintain her results in future or leave it to just school. She just has HCL tuition, rest study by herself.
I think it's possible to let her play in year 1. Just make sure she pays attention to the substantive subjects such as math (most important), the sciences as well as the arts subjects, so that she knows what subjects she wants to do for A levels later on. More importantly, start equipping her with learning/self studying skills that they don't explicitly teach in RVHS, such as critical thinking (I recommend Critical Reasoning, a Practical Introduction). If she masters this, it will help her learn the substantive subjects a lot faster later on.

My biggest grumble with RVHS is that there's too much spoonfeeding. Students' aren't really expected to learn anything outside their notes. The transition from JC to University is huge as a result, because there students are expected to make sense out of all the readings and data thrown at them, on their own...

As to RV results comparable to NJC and TJC? NJC 2016 'A' Level results are better than RV.
NYJC 2016 A level are results better than RV too.
But RV results is better than TJC.

It appears that RV and TJC are the only 2 IP JCs that are not performing as well as the other IP JCs.

I'm an RVHS Alumnus. I think our peak was within the 2010 and 2011 batches (when we were just handed over from Ek Soo Ben over to Koh Yong Chiah). After that, i think the dip has been pretty significant. I remember our 2011 batch, 44% of us had like 3 distinctions at A levels. As Grandyma pointed out, the 3h2 distinctions just hit 31%.

Back in my time, GP was pretty much the only killer subject (we were trying to hit 100% pass for this) and if you didn't get the required C for GP, a lot of Uni courses would require a makeup language course. Not too sure how the status quo is now, but generally, it doesn't look very promising if the overall distinctions for other subjects are falling.

That said, A levels is only good for getting your foot into a university (as an added bonus, a scholarship). I know a few of my peers who are doing very well now, but had pretty disappointing results at A levels.

Last time, first class honours fresh graduate will get higher starting salary. Is it still true now?

How about local graduate vs overseas graduate (Ivy League university)? Which one will get higher starting salary?

      TIA
Depends on the industry also. Within the legal industry, the difference between a first at NUS/SMU and a first from oxbridge is non-existent. In fact, some might say that locally the firms prefer hiring the NUS/SMU kids (of course, bearing in mind that NUS Law's used to have more dean's listers than FCHs.)

The gap between a first and a second-upper in NUS is quite small - the biggest difference is actually the firm which you are joining, rather than your class of honours. If you join one of the magic circle firms, you can easily start off at 10k/annum (other big international firms offer around 7k) - they usually only take in the clear first class honours/consistent dean's listers.

The big 4 currently offers around 5-6k. Other firms, most graduates will get around 4-5k regardless of class of honours. Even the government offers 4.4 thereabouts for 2nd uppers.

    • RE: Does law graduates in Singapore have a lack of job?

      mookata:

Kinda an old post since it has been almost two months, but excalibres actually mentioned that he's a business undergrad, not a law undergrad. As a law undergrad though, I can confirm that yes, you won't have much time for family, nor time to spend on your hobbies. Maybe just a few hours to spare each week.
I agree on this. This also depends on how high up the academic ladder you want to climb. If you are looking at winning book prizes, overall top student for level etc, you can safely kiss all your time goodbye.

As for the market, as long as one doesn't do domestic work, it is easy to survive. the legal industry now doesn't just need people who are good at law, they need innovators/people who can create or grow new markets. That's what the legal industry has sorely lacked till today.

    • RE: [Jurong West] Tutors/Tuition Centres/Enrichment

      Hi Parents,

Anyone whose child needs an intensive GP workshop during the June Holidays? I’m a scholar with NUS Law, one of the top students within the faculty. I’m looking at organizing a workshop for a small group of students, with an aim to equip them the necessary critical thinking skills to do well in their GP paper. PM me if you would like to find out more about my credentials, or more about the workshop!
