RE: O-Level Additional Math
James Ang:
A Maths is easy to study in school but not easy to do it privately due to the need for indepth practice and learning. High level maths techniques and treatments are taught in Add Maths such as logarithm, further trigo, binomial equations, differentiation and integration, kinematics etc which E maths only student will not understand without proper coaching and guidance.
Actually should consider yourself lucky as compared to the Chinese... -
RE: 2010 DSA(Direct School Admission)
Sun_2010:
Congrats Guthix to ur DS
I think it is because HCI is sort of taking those minorities of top students that will go to RI and applied for HCI just in case.Guthix:
Anyone know how long is the wait list for RI?
HCI waitlist 1 is 80 (HCI said 100% accepted provided HCI is selected as 1st choice), HCI waitlist 2 is 62.
So what is his choice? is it same as yours?
Since ur son seems a very motivated kid , was wondering his choice...
Just Kaypoh!
He is currently considering NUSHS for the Module System and the accelerated syllabus. I suspect that someone paid him to choose this as he got both COes in RI and HCI to make space for the WL pupils. Then again, maybe I'm juz paranoid...

RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)
powershengyang:
No, not exactly true. The accelerated syllabus and the module courses is what that interest my son most. And some other very influential pupils, as I suspect, are leading the fight for NUSHS. Young people their age are incredibly vulnerable to such techniques, as they view themselves as \"grown-ups\" and don't really care for elders' advice and are young and indecisive enough to fall for the techniques, making the society of the class largely power-based. Fortunately, my son does not fall under any of the above categories.
Really, i thought propaganda was only between HCI and RI, have not heard of any propaganda concerning NUSHS yet. HCI and RI are strongly against each other as they compete for the best \"A\" level results each year, dont know why your child told you about NUSHS being in the equation as well. -
RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)
fruitplus:
Yes that's correct. RI is rather well-rounded and is very famous. It is extremely useful for a recommendation for lawyers and doctors.
I heard HCI is strong in humanity programme (and of course Chinese programme), what about RI? Science? -
RE: Typing software
ChiefKiasu:
Not really sure, try http://www.typingcourse-online.com/ for more advance testing. can type and read news at the same timeBut seems like must pay one. Here's a http://www.computingwithkids.com/column/2001817.asp which lists quite a number of other software. Interestingly, it also says that parents should not pressurize kids under 7 years old to learn typing :).
Here's another good http://typing-for-kids-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ for kids typing software too.
But for the cheapskate me, I'll stick to the free online ones. I found one here:
http://kids.learn2type.com/.
Tried the online test. Score of 100% accuracy and 61 wpm. Is that good? -
RE: Primary Science Olympiad
i hear that NUSHS is also organizing the National Science Olympiad Singapore, for P5 students, which schools can register and participate.
RI also organized a competition called RSO (Raffles Science Olympiad). It is quite prestigious and only the top 40 gets a prize. (My son was one of them) the top 15 then goes through rigorous training cum selection process and the remain 6 goes on to an international competition, last year held in HK. Will be very important to RI or other schools’ DSA.
To prepare for it, what my son did was actually to read up extensively about some books that i’m not sure of. He did it on his own. Try reading some Secondary schools textbooks (Chem, Bio, Physics). In fact, there isn’t any use if your child has no motivation or interest. you can’t force them. if they are not interested, forget it. -
RE: E2K Science
I think E2K is Excellence 2 Thousand and is a bit like enrichment course. My child is in GE and automatically studied the E2K syllabus last year. This year, there is a E2K competition, featuring schools from Israel and Texas. It is an international competition. The inaugural competition is for this year’s P5, but some selected P6 gets to go too.
