fruitplus:can u tell who is the one making the decision in his associate of friends? if that person is not your son, then you will probably need a heart to heart talk, understand his strengths and weaknesses, and chooses the school yourselfYes. he is following his friends blindly, that bothers me a lot.Guthix:
If that's the case, then let him follow his heart and interest, unless by judging from your description and my experience, he is those that follows his friends almost blindly.

a few years back they actually have those XiZI books that the school use and they show the sequence of the strokes, and also have guiding lines to practise handwriting. It is good to start training handwriting that early, because it will be a severe handicap at the PSLE and will cause you to lose marks. (Let's face it, handwriting does matter)wa_si_kiasu_lau_peh:
...but 1st spelling come back get 7 out of 10 start panicing .....
This actually happened to me.
DS was getting full marks for his 听写 until recently when there was a change in the Chinese teacher. The new teacher is very strict with accuracy of the strokes or penmanship. And DS starts to get lots of corrections because of his poor handwriting.
I panicked, worried about his confidence and his year end exam.
So I went to popular and bought him a Chinese calligraphy book and started revising the strokes with him.

My son will start in P1 and you mind to share some thing good or bad about this school? What I have to get him prepared for next year?
I don't really have anything new, becoz my child transferred from this school, but for the early primaries, things should be quite easy. From my child's cohort, there are also a few bullies, but that might be an isolated case. The library is quite a good place to be. -

Thanks d1s2 and wonderm. I hope that is the case. DS prefers RI (although I feels that HCI suits him more than RI, DS is the friendly and easygoing type).
If that's the case, then let him follow his heart and interest, unless by judging from your description and my experience, he is those that follows his friends almost blindly.
Since many people are offered by both RI and HCI, and maybe also ACSI and NUSH. I don't think ALL of those with multiple offers will choose RI. RI could have estimated number of people who will give up their CO and gave out WL accordingly. That could explain why RI WL is shorter than other schools, and it could also mean those given RI WL have the same high chance of getting it?wonderm:

I also thought that WL for RI would have a lesser chance but last year, all of my son's friend's (about 5/6) who were on the WL for RI were all offered places. My son and a few of his friends gave up RI and chose HCI instead. -

A lot of my child's classmates are being influenced by each other and the whole class is like a battle of propaganda between the schools. 3 major \"sects\", RI, HCI, NUSHS tries to pull the most classmates to join them. Quite a lot have been wavered by NUSHS' Module System and HCI's humanities. For now, there, as far as my son tells me, a stalemate

I suppose few people with CO from RI will give up their places, that's why maybe WL for RI has a more remote chance. Nevertheless, the PSLE results is still more important. -

I agree. This final year of Primary School Education is an extremely major decision and can change the future of your child. There is a time to gamble recklessly and a time to take a deep look into your child's potential and interest and make a decision after much consideration. Now it is the time to do the latter, carefully assess your child and match with the correct school. For your child, if he believes he has an outstanding record and will continue to outshine his peers, placing him in RI and trusting him will be the wisest choice. After all, who knows your son better than himself?Yes, my son got offers from RI, HCI and NUS High. Before that, I am worried. Now that he has all 3 offers in hand, I am confused.
I think every school has it strengths and weaknesses. The more I hear from people, the more confused I am.
I had a chat with him. Right from beginning, I was for HCI and he wants to go to RI.
I went to both HCI and RI Open House and am impressed with both.
I had not gone to NUS High Open House as I was not sure if he could even get in. When he got the offer, I decided to attend the tea session (which is today) and came back feeling a little confused. Looks like a good school, but I am worried if the kids are too young to specialize in just Maths and Science.
He is OK in Math and has a lot of interest in Science. With the right company and good mentor, he will excel.
I am not sure if RI is the right place for him if he is not outstanding enough. I am told that only the brightest will be well taken care of and nurtured.
What if.... so many what if.
Wonder if there other parents out there facing same concerns as me......
PS: Perhaps he is the first child and I have no comparison..... -

I don't understand this. If everyone on waitlist 1 is guaranteed a place, then why didn't they just offer them a confirmed place to begin with? Doesn't make sense.
It is because the MOE has guidelines as to the ratio of COes to Vacancy, probably that the schools are not allowed to give more COes than the Vacancies available.
Yes, the principal promised in the Open House that HCI will not 'abandon' our kids, while RI will ask students who did not do well enough to leave the school (happened to my daughter's senior, he was transferred out of the school, but he is doing extremely well now).fruitplus:

I think you work hard but you also get to play. They get a week of sabbatical at the end of 3 terms, that they get to bid for fun courses such as IT classes, fencing, scrabbles, F1 workshop, hip hop,..... totally no regular lessons. That's what they are doing this week
Regarding the O levels, I understand that they do find that not all kids cope with the IP curriculum and in such situations, the school feels that O levels may be better for them. They have 1 class of about 20 students on the O levels track where I was told that the best teachers are assigned to. The students can go back to the IP track later if they are coping better. According to HCI, once they've accepted a student into the school, they are committed to helping the child go all the way to JC.
In yesterday's DSA waitlist 1 briefing, the principal said that all students in waitlist 1 are guarenteed to get a place.
My son waitlisted for both RI and HCI, but most of his friends are choosing RI. And RI is nearer to our house. Yet, chances of getting RI is unknown, but HCI is 100% even though it is waitlist (provided we put HCI as 1st choice).
Headache! -

I think it is because HCI is sort of taking those minorities of top students that will go to RI and applied for HCI just in case.Anyone know how long is the wait list for RI?
HCI waitlist 1 is 80 (HCI said 100% accepted provided HCI is selected as 1st choice), HCI waitlist 2 is 62. -
RE: Do non-GEP student has much chance with DSA
wiimum:
For GE, as I here from my boy, 100% of the girls made it into RGS + NYGH with CO. I think it's because there is less GE girls so they are more \"precious\", so the schools want them
I believe the top choices among the boys would be RI, HCI, NUSH. Others may choose DHS, ACS(I). Very few would go to RV, SJI, NJC.
Among the girls, mostly RGS or NYGH.
Just my guess.
