Sorry, the placement of my comment in the above post was confusing. I meant to say this:

“Could a better indicator be the 3rd category of foreign language options? Thought someone said that only the top 10% (? Or was it another percentage?) were offered the option which includes German, Spanish, etc.”
Top 10% is determine by a certain COP for each year or by the COP of the last IP school (eg. TJC) ?

I don't think it is accurate to use the COP of the last IP school unless MOE gives a benchmark.

Could a better indicator be the 3rd category of foreign language options? Thought someone said that only the top 10% (? Or was it another percentage?) were offered the option which includes German, Spanish, etc.

I also think so. As the COP is still determined by supply & demand.

But if that so, can I say that a student who meet the COP (eg. 249) and qualify into an IP school (eg. TJC), may not be within the top 10%?

Meaning to say, not all students who gain entry via JAE into an IP school is within the top 10% right?
Agree with Zeng

Zeng:
I see this differently.

No doubt it is very rare, but other than newsworthiness, it encourages students to \"follow their dreams\" and that nothing in life is impossible.

Back when the student received his PSLE 181 T score, no one would have imagined that he would one day make it to NUS medicine. He may not have even have this dream then but along the way as he gained confidence and inspiration, he \"followed his dream\" and with hardwork and some luck, it did come true for him.

I thought this is very inspiring to many students who may have just received not so stellar PSLE results and to encourage them to keep going.

If it is possible (no matter how rare) that someone with a 181 score can actually make it to NUS medicine, then anything is possible for the thousands of students not to lose hope but
to keep working hard on their dreams, whatever that maybe

For every 1 of this 181 pointer going to medicine school, wonder how many have gone to other much much less lucrative paths?
What is the point of highlighting the $10m toto winner, when the rest of Singapore just lost $10m or more to Singapore pool??

I noticed a few changes after many years.
eg.
COP of HCI is above RI
COP of MGS is above HCI
COP of TJC has fallen below 250

HCI can add in Higher chinese *1-3 points, Technically if 258 - 3 points is 255. Below RI.

MGS - has affliated primary school

I don’t think the MGS affiliation applies to the IP programme. Only the express programme (which remains lower than RI’s cop)

I wasn’t expecting the MGS IP cop to rise this year due to the increase in spaces. It added another IP class (from next year, there are 3 classes instead of 2).

MGS added the 3rd class of IB last year (means Sec 1 this year), not next year, and the COP last year dropped from 261 to 259.

I see, thanks. Thought I heard the principal say something in May this year about increasing the intake by another 20 plus students starting from in 2018. Maybe it’s just an expanded cohort then.

I thought for top schools mainly stay unchanged or drop. SNGS is 257 last year this year 256. SCGS unchanged at 252. Only CHS & MGS increase by 1 pt. Looks like drop in DSA intake has resulted in this trend?
Could be driven by the increasing popularity for IB program. MGS is the only girls school to offer IB.
That is possible. Looks like the cops for all the IP-leading-to-IB programmes did not experience drops in cops?

So all COP is base on demand & supply? This time round we see increase in COP at SCGS, CHS, SNGS & the usual norm for RI & HCI to be at 260 also drop.

Ha, ha... I'm tasked to coach niece & nephew. My hope is to help out a volunteer organization to help latchkey kids with their studies. It'll be a test how is it like coaching other kids v my own.

These kids will be very blessed to have you, Esteema. That’s a great idea
