dunnoleh:never mind if they miss the underlying message now.Jennifer:
It is a really wonderful book but at his age, I don't think he is able to appreciate the underlying message . What a waste!
That's the reason why I asked if The Animal Farm is suitable for 14 y.o. Wld the kids take it just as a fiction story or understand its implications/relate it to our present society makeup?
When my boy was in P6, the sch made HOLES a compulsory reading material. To him, it was a boring book.
the true meanings may surface 30/40/50 years later in life.
I may have memorised the δΈεη» at 6, and still find new meanings in it now.
I think they will understand the underlying message to a certain extent. I enjoyed Animal Farm in Sec2, and still remember it till today. Our kids are smarter than we think they are. But in today's world, Communism is no longer a threat like it used to be. So the relevance of the book has been simmered down for that reason.Another text I enjoyed was \"Things Fall Apart\". Some schools still use it today. That may be still relevant because it talks about changing cultures and values in society - a challenge that our children face.
