    • RE: Difficulties of having a intellectually gifted child

Hey thank you all for your contribution and suggestions.

My son is 5. I’m homeschooling my son full time. It is impossible to let him read up and find out for himself. Know why?

Because the info and details he requires are very extensive. The books for kids are out. As for the adult books…i’ll never know what he needs this time or the next time. I can’t be buying specialty books all the time. Plus there is no library at where I am residing now.

For example, I can’t be buying books that explains extensively on explaining the DNA determining offsprings of pure breed cats, mixed breed etc etc…like how a short haired mother & father of certain breeds produces litters of different offsprings…This is only ONE example…there is a different project every other week.

As for the use of internet to get these info…this is where I MUST and HAVE to come in. Even for an adult, it is not an easy task searching for the required info. Plus…he is only 5 … how to type so easily and search for relevant sites? I have to help him right? And also, he is just a young child…it is not right to leave him to search the internet on his own…

Right or not??? Anyone share the same experience as me???

      EN:
      Hi homeschooling mum

In the 3 threads quoted, nothing has been discussed about the \"so much talks & so many questions, drive me nuts\" issue.

But there is a thread on \"Why, why, why\" which you can use it as a platform for discussion on the topic \"questions that can drove parents nuts\". http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=981

Give examples/scenario so that it is easy for like minded parents to share experience. 😉
Hi EN, thanks! I briefly went through the 3 threads. It's extremely lengthy and too overwhelming for me. I personally would prefer light hearted and sincere sharing lei. Not just reading about the amazing things that their gifted kids can do and what kinds of classes they attend. It's like a competition.

U r right... i can't really find anything there which i hope to discuss i.e. the difficulties faced by mothers with their gifted child. Simple issues faced by everyday lives. A good example I would like to start with is that my son is very obsessed to find out the truth about things. Just this morning, he was drinking a milk and started reading the label...and he then he starts again.

To cut the story short...now he is totally into finding out what each and every ingredient in the milk does to the body and how it was discovered and by whom etc etc etc. I'm sure he will spend the next many many days doing this. It will become a big big project and one discovery leads to another and it goes on and on and on...

this is what drives me nuts cos i got to 'study' it so extensively with him to guide him along...so i thought maybe there must be many other mothers facing similar situations and what they do to stay sane, at the same time satisfy their child's obsession.

I sincerely hope to hear from those who would like to discuss this topic that's all. If anyone thinks that i shouldn't start this topic...well that's OK .... but i don't really understand why... :?

    • RE: Difficulties of having a intellectually gifted child

Hi csc, thanks for the information. But it’s really time consuming for me to stare at the computer to read so much info. I started this topic cos i thought it would be more fun to have an ‘interactive sharing’ of experience and not just reading previous threads.

I certainly hope to ‘meet’ some like-minded mummies here as i’m new to this forum. Looking forward!

    • RE: Difficulties of having a intellectually gifted child

Ok let me start off first,

I’ve got a close friend who’s a child psychologist. We often hang out together at my place and she also helps me keep my son occupied for a couple of hours while i take a break.

By the way, my son talks and asks questions the entire day from 630am to 830pm. I’m always on the verge of getting nuts!

So one day she suggested that i let her assess him. So she told me that my son is intellectually gifted based on his IQ score.

      Let’s share our experiences.

Hi all mummies of intellectually gifted children,

Let's discuss the difficulties faced in the daily lives of having a gifted child. I hope to learn more from all of you.

And remember: let's have fun and share experiences. No angry and spiteful comments please! (i was scared off reading the fierce exchange in another topic - scary man)

      Cheers!

    • RE: Any parents of gifted children here ?

Actually my son did face some challenges when he attended kindergarten for a month while we were in penang. Because he was homeschooled all the time, his knowledge and areas of interests are very different from his peers. He was very upset that the other children couldn’t understand him.

The teachers observed him for a week and came up with a solution i.e. put him in a class with children. That solved his difficulty for a while. But i understand that this is not a long term solution especially when he grows older. He totally enjoys forming friendship with much older children and adults.

What do u suggest that I can do for now?

    • Mummy homeschooling mum: So lost and out of touch!

      hi all please help!

i'm an overseas singaporean...i just realised that i got to register my son for primary 1 this june for next year intake. Although not going back to study but MOE says got to 'choope' a place first.

      My headaches are:
      1) I do not have a singapore address. My parents' address can or not?
      2) I lost my old old long time ago report book. How to show that i'm an ex student?
      3) If i don't get a place in the 2A2 (for ex students i think) how will i know...then how? what's next?
      4) My son is currently homeschooled but MOE wants to me to prove that he is receiving proper schooling out of singapore...how?

Someone please show me the light! Help!
       :?:

    • RE: Any parents of gifted children here ?

Hi all...seemed like 'gifted' is a really hot topic! I read on and on and it's like never ending but interesting...

I'm totally new to this forum and would like to share my experience on this topic. I am an overseas singaporean with a 5 year old. Because of frequent travelling, my son didn't have the luxury of attending daily school weekly enrichment bcos we don't know when we got to go.

To date, he is totally homeschooled has never attended school before or enrichment classes of any sort. All he had was all day long playing whatever he likes wherever we are and fun reading time with me since he was a baby.

I would like to share that he was able read words since 2 and right now reading & sourcing for information independently. No intentional teaching word for word or flashcards, special reading methods or whatever else available.

Now he independently reads very extensively and uses the internet and books to find out more about things that evoke his interest. I just follow along and guide him. Strangely enough, right now it's french cheeses for the past two weeks...he first read that in a restaurant menu.

So i'm trying to say to mummies out there, don't waste your money sending your child to all sorts of classes. Childhood is too precious is waste by attending classes and school all the time! Home is the best classroom and you are the best teacher your child can ever have.
