      Hi there.
Next year will be the last year in Kindergarten for our child.
I'm pondering if the kindergarten our child attends made a difference if we enrol them for Primary 1?
Do you mean in terms of affiliation to primary schools, or preparedness for primary 1? For the first, the only affiliated kindergartens are the MOE Kindergartens (can apply in 2A2 to the primary school that the MK is in). For the second, I'm not sure, though I imagine most kindergartens/childcare centres will bring kids up to the minimum standard needed for P1 at least? (Not sure what that is - reading, writing, counting, simple addition?)

We have the 4-room HDB flat so that we can not follow the rest of the advice - especially with regard to travel. 🙂 Except the last one about leaving the Earth a better place - I'm not sure I follow it, exactly, but it's a good guide for life.

(I would wear the same jeans I wore in my 20s if I could! Unfortunately I seem to need bigger clothes all the time...)

      Hi hi

my family going taipei in dec. any suggested places to visit?

btw caesar park and cosmos hotel, which is more suitable for kids?
      which has a better breakfast?
easy to have breakfast outside the hotel?

      thanks
      How old are your kids?

We went to Taiwan last Dec for the first time, with a 6-month old and a 3yo, and did the usual tourist things: night markets (didn't go to Shilin but Raohe was great), National Taiwan Museum, parks/playgrounds, bubble tea, Jiufen and Shifen day trip. We also did a farm visit, which the 3yo loved, but might not be so fun for older kids.

Not sure about those particular hotels, but it wasn't hard to have breakfast outside. Also pretty easy to get around Taipei.

    • RE: My 2-Year Old Wakes Up in the Middle of the Night

I wanted to say, I don’t think it’s about doing things wrong! Some kids just have a lot of energy. Mine have fought sleep since they were newborns.

For the playing at night, could you just…not? Either DH or I will sleep with DD if/when she wakes up at night (whole different problem - how do you get a kid to sleep independently??), but that’s all we do - just sleep. We usually pass out before her, and I guess she eventually puts herself to bed. My rule for her is that she doesn’t have to sleep if she can’t, she just has to lie down quietly and rest (quietly is key), and this usually works for night sleep if she is actually tired.

My daughter is the same and she's 3 now. Do you think over-stimulated can be the reason? Bcs my daughter reaaally loves to play and always wanting to know new things and play all the time that she refuses to sleep unless she's very tired/sleepy.

Does anyone know game for training child's attention?
Does she nap in the day? My dd is a bit like this and the naps they have to take at childcare really messes up her bedtime. She's 4 now and does wake up in the middle of the night but can put herself back to sleep - so don't despair. 🙂

Otherwise, I think some kids are just not good sleepers - they're probably going to grow up into the kind of person who works hard and plays hard and does it all on 5 hours of sleep a night, on good nights (this is not necessarily a bad thing).

My dad was a bit like this when we were teens too, especially with my brother - even though we were, objectively, really guai kids. But like all teens we self-absorbed and a tiny bit rebellious and not very interested in his advice and showed it, and he expected to be respected and listened to with more deference. I think this was only resolved with time - we all of us grew up and mellowed (and my brother went to NS, which removed him from my dad’s scolding for a bit), and we do all get along pretty well now. Sorry, that doesn’t help very much, but just to say that I think this is a common situation, and there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Err... there are people I know who do 3+ days trip to Europe (leave in the wee hours of Friday, come back in the early morning of Sunday). They don't mind doing it because:
      1. Singapore is boring
      2. Tickets are pretty cheap (ID ticket)
      3. Hotels are affordable (industry rate)
      4. They just need that latest season handbag
      :siam:
:yikes: Isn't that a whole day just for travelling?? 12 hours there and 12 hours back?

My DD1 is worried if Yr3/Yr4 she does not hit 65% and above, she will only do Sc at H1 level and she will be finished!

I don't understand this? Is the 65% referring to overall results? Or to a specific subject? And \"Sc at H1\" - does that mean she fears she will not be in the Science stream? Surely the criteria for choosing to take a particular science is dependant on the performance in that science (and maybe Maths), not the overall average?

I was too busy yesterday to respond, but I did read your questions about choosing between triple/double science and Hist/Geog. For the triple/double choice, it would depend on the child's ability to take that many subjects, and whether she can decide which science to drop.

Personally, I feel that students should take subjects they are interested in, given a choice, even if they don't seem to be doing that well. Interest will help them figure out ways to improve, but disinterest can mean that when the work gets harder (and it will), they may flounder later. All subjects are \"different\" in lower vs upper sec, and different again in JC, so early performance may not be a very good predictor of later performance. You have to assess whether she is not doing well because of less important factors (like fussy teachers) or that she really can't understand the work. But for the Hist/Geog choice, if she doesn't really care one way or the other, then other factors (like father's availability to coach) will come into play.

Again, personally, I found Geog easier to handle as it's less subjective. I love reading history, but refused to study it as a subject after Sec 2 (I had a really bad Hist teacher in Sec 2, and Hist wasn't offered to Science students in my time). I find that Geog has less memory work (no dates!) than Hist, and because it has more \"logic\" to it, I found it easier.

      Just my opinion.

I see the comment about history and memorization a fair bit and just wanted to offer an alternative view. 🙂 Secondary school was a long time ago, but I think there's as much memorization in Geog as in History - just a question of remembering different things. History is about telling a story about events (e.g. what happened when the British came to Southeast Asia, how World War II started etc), so you need a basic grasp of what the events are, including when they happened, to be able to tell the story - just like you need a basic grasp of how different kinds of rocks erode at different rates to make sense of particular rock formations (sorry it's been a long time since I did physical Geog). Which is a long way of saying, one way of thinking about which subject to study is to pick the set of facts (historical, geographical, literary) that you're interested in explaining.

I don't think there is a neat summary of the 2018 results, but you can work it out from the tables here: https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=91621

Or work backwards from here: https://balloting.xyz/

Or if you have a particular school in mind, someone will probably know the ballot history.

Do you know of any organization/company that does textile recycling, apart from H&M? Not all our old clothes are in donatable condition.
