I think $40 per hr is a good rate if you can find a suitable tutor. I am paying $80 for sec 3 science for 1.5 hr lesson.

for cancellations, each tutor has her own policy but I think tutors don't like parents who cancel frequently. think this way - tutors are trying to earn money honestly. canceled lessons are a surely loss to 'em

:goodpost:
We would need to be fair to tutors as fees are their salaries. So if the arrangement is paid at the end month, then parents should honour.
If tutors keep cancelling lessons, we would be upset too.

Yes, agree. I don't like tutors who keep cancelling lesson, would terminate if it keeps recurring. However, if I need to cancel lesson, I try to make-up lesson in other weeks, 1st to be fair to tutor as this is their income, also, don't want my child to miss out coaching time.
:goodpost: Happy to see understanding parents around! 🙂

• RE: All About Market Rates of Private Tutors

In my opinion, to get a moe trained tutor or not depends on whether you think those credentials or certificates are very important, but do note that teachers from moe are teaching in class styles and therefore are trained to engage a group of students together, so it’s different when it comes to 1-1 private tuition. An experienced full time 1-1 tutor might in some cases be more capable at teaching to single student in 1-1 tuitions.

To me, what’s most important is whether the teaching style of the tutor and the learning style of the student clicks, if not concepts are hard to impart and the student will not be enjoying their learning. An experienced tutor with recommendations and good track record raises the probability of having the teacher-student fit.

In terms of the subject, Math, the old saying applies: practice makes perfect. There’s really no other way to improve except to raise the pen and solve the questions personally. Reading, seeing, watching doesn’t work… So i would vote for having homework… But of course not so much until it drowns the child and makes him/her unmotivated to continue.

As for the reminder for fees payment, it differs from tutor to tutor as it’s a personal style. There’re also some who would have a small notebook to record what has been taught every lesson and what is the homework given, and there’re some who would drop a feedback message to the parent after every lesson, etc. If there’s something you would like the tutor to do, i think can try to communicate with the tutor.

I'm an ex-beattyian. Beatty is a slightly above average neighborhood school. That being said, a neighborhood school would definitely have some 'ah beng' students, but mostly would be in the behind classes. If you're entering beatty, by sec 2's streaming, do well and aim for the front classes, the studying environment would be better. At my time, discipline is strict as they regularly check student's hair length, uniform length, and they have some rather fierce teachers who would be enforcing such school rules.

How about NA?

I'm not sure about NA.. only knew about express stream.

Hi all.

need help. Pls clarify me. I am new to sec 1 postings
1 If the sec 1 student takes HMT, does he still need to take MT?
2, What is double, triple science or combined sci?

I think if you take HMT, you dont hv separate lessons for MT.
Triple Sc = Phy, Chem and Bio.
Double Sc = any of the above two subjects.

Some subjects used to call Physical Science, combine Phy and Chem to make it as a subject. I think this is called Combined Sc.

Yes, triple science means taking all the 3 science subjects, physics, chemistry and biology. This means you need to go for all 3 science exams (as they're considered 3 subjects) and will get 3 results (one for each science).
And double science means just studying for any 2 of the 3 science subjects.
The triple or double science is considered the pure science.

Combined science means you'll still take 2 of the science subjects but the results will be merged into one. This means it's only considered as one subject and you will only get 1 result.

But at your current sec 1 level, you don't have to worry about the pure science and combined science yet. You'll be introduced to the 3 science subjects but it'll all be classified under a subject called 'science'. Only at the end of sec 2 then you'll get to choose whether you're taking oure science or combined science, and whether you're taking double or triple science. This would depend on your sec 2 results and of course, your preference in the science subjects.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you're still unsure 🙂

How about looking at courses offered at islandwide community centres?

You can try out Junior math busters, a headstart in Primary math workshop at Serangoon Braddell heights cc.. Seems to be a new addition of course from one of their successful series of Fraction busters holiday course...

Hi
may I know how's the class size for the junior math busters? I'm keen to let my kid try.

The one at braddell heights is for 4-15 pax. Not sure about the size for the workshop at other community centres..

• RE: All About Preschool Enrichment

I’ve been teaching with an enrichment centre for their enrichment programs for a few years now and I’m always happy to see the children having fun when they’re learning maths concepts like counting, addition & subtraction, fractions, etc… and excitedly bringing home their DIY math tools and gifts of achievement! Fyi, I’m not helping to advertise… just that i know of a good one as i teach for them and would like to share it with parents here who might be interested in enrolling one for your child. When I have kids in the future, i would definitely bring them here too! Can pm me if you’re interested!

Pls help! Thanks
Do you have any skills? Like do you have a subject (eg, cooking, language) that you're good at and can teach? Or are you good at communications? Or where does your past work experience gear towards?

• RE: Ds is good at nothing

As a tutor myself, I would be more than happy if parents tell me they are willing to help out! Afterall, we’re only there for once a week, and for only 1.5 to 2h, there’s only a limited number of things we can do with such a limited duration…so if parents can help out from home like revision on topics that the tutor and school have gone through and sit with their child during homework time to provide any guidance if necessary, that would really help a lot!
