    • RE: iPhone 6s plus or Samsung note 5

      Melita\" post_id=\"2027240\" time=\"1623760368\" user_id=\"192666:

Hi guys! I have been recently considering giving android a try, particularly the note 5 but I'm really split up about which phone to buy

      Note 5 pros and cons:

-i can get the note 5 for about 200 dollars cheaper compared to the iPhone

-Never tried out the samsung phones before(looks pretty promising for an average user)

      -Customizability for android

      -amazing display

      -has a really nice s-pen

-But the one thing i dislike is the OS particularly, just scrolling through the home screen, going through the news or going through reddit in general on android devices. I have been so used to iPhone's IOS because everything feels 100x smoother compared to android.

-In general, IOS feels so much less frustrating to use compared to android(maybe I'm just too used to it). -Android does have a lot more to it than i know so i will have a l more to explore

-slows down a lot after 1 year(heard from friends with the note4)

      I-Phone pros and cons:

-the new features on the 6s isn't that appealing to me(3d touch, camera

-I never use imessage, iTunes, podcast, FaceTime or basically any of the apple built in apps. Kinda useless to me imo.

-Most of the time, i just surf the web reading stuff, going on youtube and using the social networking apps(Facebook, instagram etc...)

-Never really viewed the restrictive os of the iPhone as something that bugged me or was a big problem.

-i do have a macbook and iPad mini so syncing and transferring stuff around would be a lot easier, but i don't do much of that either.

      -Apple watch!

SO i wanted to know from you guys on reddit whats your opinion on switching from iOS to android or the note 5 and maybe which phone would suit me better for the next 2 years?

      Sorry for the long post!
You already has Apple stuff, probably going with 6s would make sense. It will get next iOS 15 update while Note 5 long stopped update support from Samsung.

I own both and some subsequent iOS and Android models. I find that Android is superior in most day-to-day use. iPhone is great if your life revolves around social media. Photos taken by iPhones tend to look better. Camera operations and texting, iOS seems more intuitive and faster.

My son has tried 3 different Chinese enrichments. At around your son age, my son even speak English with UK accent from watching tons of Peppa pig cartoons. Zero chinese. I myself is neither foreign educated nor able to read or write Chinese. Can speak a little. I sent my kids to Hua. Hua has 2 kind of preschool programs. They got the story-oral and usual read-write. My kids with them for 3 years since N1. Then at the same time I enrolled him to N2 Berries as well when they have a slot available. It was quite intensive sending to 2 Chinese enrichments and doing revisions with him (considering I am not Chinese educated). Now in K2 and going P1 next year, he can speak and write Chinese better than my entire life. He lost his UK accent. English wise is very Singaporean with a bit of Singlish from time to time. But his Chinese has a bit of Beijing accent from time to time.

Now, he can speak with those mainland Chinese curly sound for end of sentence pronounciation (rarely you able to hear this even from very educated Chinese students in Singapore). I credit to Hua for earlier experience because initially he can't speak or even like Chinese. The oral program with stories and singing really help to make him like Chinese. But now going into P1, I find his Chinese is a bit 'soft' on the writing side, so discontinued Hua and get him with TienHsia and keeping Berries still. TH is more difficult compare to Hua or Berries. It is less if you compare to others like Jiang Han or Wang.

      So here is my thoughts,

      1. Hua oral-stories program for young beginner with almost no Chinese.
      2. Berries for generally under P1.
      3. Consider having at least 2-3 Chinese enrichments to catch up. Lots of revision with him. Be careful not overdoing it or else kids will hate Chinese. Make sure don't criticise his English dominated watching. That is the rewards for doing more Chinese enrichments.
      4. Consider higher up Chinese enrichments like TH, Jiang, Bee, Wang to beef up more harder English. For example upto now, K2 Berries has no tingxie but TH already got 3-4th now (if without pandemic, it would have been like 10th).
      5. Borrow a lot of children Chinese books at library. Get yourself a passion card which gives you 20 books to borrow. Register you kid as member as well (can start since baby) for 16 books. So a household of 3 can easily get 56 books at one go. Consider I can't read or write Chinese, I have to pre translate the books using Google translate, memorize the pronounciation before can read story books at night to my son. I think you will have it much easier than me.

Oh, during holidays, Hua has very nice Chinese holiday programs. Enroll in them. Quite good.

My son going to Chinese enrichments probably exceed my uni fee back many many decades ago when it was much cheaper.

@ingwei79 I do agree Berries excite very young kids to learn Chinese as a 2nd language but by P1, we’ve gotta move our kids to diff learning techniques & substances at appropriate level is impt. Having said, I think there shld be stringent shortlisting if teaching staff (and we’ll non be wiser if they hv good staff). My child was learning pretty well at nursery with a centre at Ulu Pandan (can’t rmbr name) and we was doing very well but was much affected by a PRC lady who keeps shouting at the kids. We switched to Berries but the curriculum cld not support beyond P2. There was a month when we noticed this same lady fr Ulu Pandan joined Berries & almost pulled out but realised she simply disappeared fr the Centre. We had to try home tuition. By P4, we found 汪老师 and found it very vigorous. It produced good results.

I must say you’re very dedicated not only in providing for yr child’s learning needs but wld learn with him. I assure u yr Mandarin & vocabulary list wld be much increased. It is my belief for our very young kids cannot overcome a non-family language without the support, cheer & journeying together. So u’re doing well. Kudos!

If I may, just chip in an observation based on yr description of yr child. He seems a highly motivated learner. I’m sure he’s very bright. My u’stand’g is that kids with language ability hv well developed brain development & can cope with learning at accelerated speed. So, u might hv a problem to keep him fully engaged & actively learning. It’s a happy problem though if managed well. I minimise screen engagement (abit though since HBL started right) and u did well to engage him with library books! Screen engagement hv a negative effect on young brains & parts of a young child’s learning will diminish. Do get him physically active too as research had supporting evidence that with physical exercise our body hv better blood circulation & endorphins are released in the brain. Yr child will certainly be a happy individual, highly motivated to learn everything ard his world.

Hope your journey as a parent will be much rewarding! 加油 💪🏻

Yeah, I agree that Berries great with younger students but probably a bit too lite with higher level. I'm just trying to ensure my kid get \"used to\" Chinese and not get too far behind his peer. If he can keep up, I might consider Wang as well. My only concern is I might tip him over to hating Chinese. He finds English is way more \"superior\" as he can read/write/express easily with English. Ah...I missed the old days. So much easier back then.

      Dear all,
My N2 DS needs Chinese enrichment cos he can hardly speaks or willing to try speaking Chinese. I hope to find class that will spark his interest cos he always tell me Chinese is difficult. The nearby berries are all full for his level. Can I hear more of Hua language style of teaching? Or any other centres that are suitable for my DS? Any recommended are most appreciated! Thank you!

    • RE: Do you know how to finance University?

      JassyT\" post_id=\"1961987\" time=\"1580814391\" user_id=\"165768:

Good day everyone. Does any of you here know how to finance a University? My sister is finding ansewers as to how can she finance university. Aside from taking scholarship exams? Thank you for helping!
Just get the kids to borrow student loan from banks. For parents, you'll likely be the guarantors but the kids will manage and pay back themselves. You do need to save up a bit as emergency cash or to bridge over the loan if it is delayed or not enough. Based on personal experience, something like SGD10K saving should be enough for local university and around 50-100K depending on what kind of foreign university. I assume the kids will be getting bank loans, thrifty, use own personal savings since young and work part time.

There is really no need to sell everything you have or getting scholarships or even using CPF savings. They borrow money themselves and payback themselves. They are fully responsible for the course they choose that can result in good earning to help them payback once graduate. Once they step out of secondary school or JCs, your obligation as parents is to help them get married and startup family. Tertiary education and work-career should be the kid full responsibility. Parents who too doted on them will just raise a self-entitled brat and risk the child end up single forever or married too late till unable to bear child.
