Thank you all for sharing your ideas/experiences. I have summarized them below.


Warning! Risks Involved!!

1. Make a friendly request the most courteous way possible to the neighbour to close the door and/or windows when smoking. Learn how to smile in front of a mirror well and pray very hard before making the request.

2. Complain to HDB, town council, NEA, MPs, PM etc. ENV will take action if the neighbour litters cigarette butts as it is a fire hazard. Otherwise, do so only if having plenty of time to waste.

3. Spray water towards the source of smoke to help wash away the smoke and cool down the neighbour if having first-class spraying skill.

4. Spray insecticide and/or Dettol disinfectant to return the unwanted favour from the neighbour.

5. Drop marbles one by one after midnight to say ‘no, thank you’ to the neighbour.

6. Install a super duper sensitive smoke detector at the door and/or windows to detect the smoke invasion. The detector should emit ear-piercing screeching noise when being set off.

7. Leave stinking substance/garbage at the front door so that the neighbour can enjoy the smell too and hopefully the smell will encourage him/her to keep his/her door closed.

8. Chit chat with the neighbour after eating tons of garlic, onions, beans etc that help improve the farting capability.

9. Turn on the most powerful fan available in the market and blow it back to the neighbour’s house with something extra.

10. Turn on the most detestable music in the world with full volume when there is smoke invasion.

11. Drop eye-popping jaw-dropping photos/images of smoking related illness in the neighbour’s mailbox to remind him of his/her not so bright future.


If all the above fail, do one or more of the following within own capabilities.


A. Close the door with a wet towel blocking the gap at the bottom and windows to reduce the smoke invasion.

B. Place the best HEPA air filters in the market near the door and/or windows to cleanse the air.

C. Spray mist filled with fragrant organic natural essential oils to battle the disgusting intruder.

D. Seal the house and turn on the air-conditioner 24 hours if cost is not a concern.

E. Sell the house and buy a bungalow with the nearest neighbour 10 meters away if having millions of spare cash.

F. Migrate to another country which bans smoking totally and BREATHE! Sadly, Bhutan is the only nation in the world that bans smoking totally.

I can understand the frustrations. ... but at times, I try to consider things from their perspective.


One told me that smoking outdoors is already so restrictive and the space keeps getting smaller. Used to be able to smoke in the coffee shops, then it became smoke at certain parts of coffee shops and in some coffee shops, total ban. He used to stand outside along the corridors or stair case landings and then rules changed and smoking in these areas are prohibited. Gave a whole list of things of what used to be and what-is now.

Now, he smokes inside his house; by the window.... and still cannot.

He also made a comment. The amount of taxes collected from cigarette sales. If there is a total ban of cigarettes sales, how will the government replace this huge amount of taxes; transfer it to all in the country?

hmmm.... self righteous?

Ask your friend to google the ill-effect of second hand smoke (if he does not know yet).

Ask him if he will smoke while carrying his own baby (if he has one).

Ask him if he wants his children (if he has) to grow up in an environment filled with second hand smoke.

Ask him if he minds his children sleep in a room filled with second hand smoke coming from his neighbour.

Ask him if he wants to have meal with his children in a coffee shop where all other customers are smoking.

Ask him how he feels if he has to keep door and windows closed at all times because his neighbour is a chain smoker.

I don't hate smokers but I hate inconsiderate smokers.

I have a good friend who smokes a lot but he never smokes in his home because he has 3 young children. When having meal with other non-smoker friends, he will walk somewhere else to smoke. He choose to smoke (although I have been trying to ask him to quit) but he does not want to affect others who don't.

I knew a young lady, 30 years old, diagnosed of stage 4 lung cancer. She was not a smoker, neither was any of her family members but she worked in a casino. Sad.

Singapore is a rich first world country. Does the government need the cigarette tax to survive? Does the government need to raise other taxes if smoking is banned just like chewing gun? How much resources and how many hospital beds do we need to treat those patients with smoking-related illness?

15% smokers vs 85% non-smokers. Can the 15% people who choose to smoke, do so without affecting the rest who choose not to?

My new next-door neighbour likes to smoke with his front door and windows wide open. I used to leave my front door and windows wide open as well because my family enjoys the breeze. Now, We keep the front door closed at all time and only a small gap at the windows. However, the smoke still invades my house. :mad:


I made a request (as nice as I could) twice for him to close the door whenever he smoked but he could not care less. :mad: Why would he care? He does not even care about the ill effects of the second hand smoke to his own family members!

I have been searching for solutions on the internet but there seem to have no good ones.

Some people complained to town council, HDB, MP etc - no use as it is not illegal to smoke in the house.

There is no air-conditioner in my house and my children have been complaining of the smell. And I am well aware of the ill effects of the smoke to my family.

I was thinking of installing smoke detector at the front door and windows but there is no such sensitive one in the market. If anyone knows, please let me know.
