MOH will no longer admit Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms to hospitals: Gan Kim Yong

The Ministry of Health (MOH) will no longer admit all confirmed Covid-19 patients, regardless of severity, to hospitals, in order to preserve capacity in Singapore’s healthcare system.

Patients with mild symptoms will instead be quarantined in a mix of private hospitals and converted Government Quarantine Facilities (GQFs), such as D’Resort in Pasir Ris, in order to focus Singapore’s critical hospital resources on the seriously ill.

According to Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong, speaking about this in Parliament on Wednesday (March 25), this is because 80 per cent of Covid-19 cases were mild to moderate, and therefore only require limited medical care.

Singapore previously admitted every Covid-19 case into hospitals

In his speech, Gan announced that Singapore will no longer be taking a conservative approach to the epidemic, due to the significant number of imported cases from returning residents and visitors, which may lead to more localised transmissions.

Previously, all confirmed Covid-19 cases, regardless of severity, were admitted to our hospitals, and remained there until they were tested negative for the virus twice, over a duration of 24 hours.

think gyms are banned too........anyone can confirm?

If you are refering to Rhythmic Gymnastics or Artistic gymnastics Sports training ( enrichment ), starting from Nursery (N2) 4 year old training onwards, Yes, they are included as well under \"Enrichment\" ban, starting \"26 / 3 to 30/4\" duration period ban

Other kind of Sports training from toddlers nursery / kindergarten age onwards, like
Fencing, golf, swimming, bowling, Akido, karate, takewondo, wushu, etc also suspended

      The same apply to
Brain memory training, focus or enhance (improve) your concentration power lessons
eg. Shichida toddler lessons, or to

Abacus fast Maths calculation (computation) brain training as well, or Kumon starting as young as from 3.5 years old

cute, funny Cartoon drawing, creative Art drawing / painting / coloring, for toddlers too

Those Mindstretcher GEP training lessons, too

If these lessons are conducted at an Enrichment centre, Yes, suspended !

If any enrichment or tuition centre dare to conduct lessons secretly and if sway sway (bad luck) some pupil catch covid-19 virus and our expert professional in Singapore do contact tracing, can trace until reach that particular centre, owner(s) of the centre can face risky outcome like

      - eg. their license to operate the enrichment / tuition centre can be removed permanently, or

      - maybe pay a $ fine or lagi worse, go jail

      - maybe their enrichment centre name become notorious overnight, get published inside Straits Times newspaper, centre spread catch people attention, etc

      In contrast,
if private tutor is hired, go to the student's (pupil) house, teach 1 to 1, still can continue, no ban

      Example

Hire a private tutor, to teach your child violin or piano music lessons or Art drawing at home, no ban

Why such a big difference ?

      Because

If 1 to 1 private tuition,
if either tutor or pupil unfortunately strike covid-19 virus, at the very most, limited spread, both tutor and pupil go to hospital

      In contrast,
If some spreader start spreading virus at a tuition (enrichment) centre, with hundreds of students present at those big, huge, popular centre, these students coming from so many different assorted primary / Secondary schools / Junior Colleges, the virus from just ONE spreader will spread fast, further into ALL these impacted primary / Sec schools / JCs. These hundreds of students will carry the virus back to their own school classroom, and in turn infect rest of the other fellow school mates as well during recess time, during school assembly, during CCA, during team project discussion when they open their mouth to talk, or at their school compound, become chaos, spiral out of control

      That s why,
after that RI (Raffles Institution) boy incident case at MOELC (MOE Language centre) Bishan branch, in Term 1 (before March holiday), when Term 2 started on Monday 23/3 this week, students received news that MOELC lessons suspended

      Why ?
      the same reason

      Inside MOELC,
so many other Secondary school students, from other Sec schools, not just RI one school only, concurrently attended the 3rd foreign language lessons, as that RI Sec 1 boy, during that Term 1 incident. Back then, they had to quickly do contact tracing, besides dis-infected that particular classroom properly, thorough job .

      Eg.
got to trace quickly, which other Sec schools' students also used that same identical classroom, as him ?
Did he talk to other students, from other Secondary schools, before his lessons started ? Which Secondary schools, are these students from ?

Actually I was referring to gym, as in places you lift weights and take part in aerobics classes

    • RE: Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) Updates

23 March 2020 - the school term fully resumed despite the current escalating COVID-19 crisis ensnaring Singapore (on this day itself, 54 new cases were confirmed by the Ministry of Health, amongst them a PCF Sparkletots teacher). Several precautionary measures were undertaken by the Education Ministry henceforth - these included mandating that teachers and students who recently returned from overseas trips serve a 14-day leave of absence, implementing exam-style seating in classrooms alongside safe distancing protocols at canteens and general play areas, as well as ramping up cleaning routines on school premises.

The day before, Education minister Ong Ye Kung also took to Facebook to proffer three main reasons surrounding the final decision to reopen schools. In his own words:

\"Let me lay out MOE’s thinking on why school will open tomorrow, but with more precautionary measures. There are three key considerations.

First, science. With the virus being around for several months now, there is a body of scientific evidence showing that COVID-19 does not affect the young very much as compared to adults. Parents will be familiar with this concept, as this is the case for other diseases such as chicken pox.

Neither is there evidence to show that the young are vectors or spreaders of the virus. The reverse appears to be the case, where the young get infected by adults at home. This is the advice of Prof Dale Fisher, Group Director of Medicine at NUHS and Chair of the WHO Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network.

......Second, disruption. Closure of schools will disrupt many lives, especially parents who are both working, with no domestic help, and have limited childcare options. We are particularly concerned about parents who are healthcare workers and providers of essential services.

Keeping our healthcare system strong is paramount in the fight against COVID-19. Our frontline warriors will be much more assured if their children are in school, meaningfully engaged, in a safe and healthy environment.

......Third, precautions. Notwithstanding that the young are more resilient to COVID-19, there is no place for complacency. We have consulted our healthcare experts and put in place many significant additional precautionary measures to safeguard the entire system, to maintain the calm situation we enjoyed before the March holidays.\"

Still, many netizens remain unimpressed, as clearly evidenced from how they took turns ripping into Mr Ong left, right and centre. An online petition calling for a complete closure of schools across the country which has since garnered more than 10K signatures bears further testament to the public uproar erupting over what has fast become a scorching hot potato. Anyways, provided herein is a non-exhaustive capture of the average Singaporean's sentiment:

      ==================================
      By Le Gill:

\"My kids have asthma. And I'm positive lots of other kids are asthmatic too. They suffer complications just from catching the common flu. My child was warded in the ICU for almost 2 weeks because he came down with the rhinovirus (which is a common flu fyi). Contrary to what the minister seeks to suggest, not all kids are resilient! Bad decision putting children at risk and then deciding the subsequent course of action based on what happens next. Is \"Safety First\" merely a slogan as far as the authorities are concerned?\"

      ==================================
      By Voon Yee:

\"I have seen primary school students coughing vigorously during recess time. I have also witnessed those who simply wiped mucus dripping from noses with their shirts!!!! I don’t think schools are really that safe!\"

      ==================================
      By Anand Thiagarajan:

\"Truth be told, the science on COVID-19 and its associated virulence is evolving - children do get infected and their numbers could contribute to the overall spread in a big way. Personally speaking, it is very difficult to assert with confidence that keeping schools open is the right thing to do in terms of infection control ( See: \"Coronavirus looks different in kids than in adults\" by The Washington Post). In fact asymptomatic or mildly ill kids might slip under the radar, thus causing new infections to transpire. The majority of affected nations allude to this possibility, hence they have closed or are in the process of closing schools as a demonstration of prudence. It’s about time that Singapore did the same.\"

Positive experience at National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID)

This is an anonymous post (from a friend of a friend).

A long, but an informative post …on the procedure at NCID for suspected Covid-19 (just in case) so you are prepared.

I was recently sent to NCID for suspected COVID-19 infection and was admitted with pneumonia. I thought my experience may help others who are wondering what the process is.

I went to my GP with a fever and cough that had only started earlier in the day. They referred me to NCID, which meant being dispatched to the makeshift quarantine area near the clinic and waiting for an ambulance.

At NCID no one is permitted to accompany you (even during your ride in the ambulance). It is VERY methodical and organised. Everyone is suited up. You follow walk along a pre-designated line, they triage you - enquire about your travel history, possible exposure scenarios, any symptoms experienced.

After triage they take you into an area with about 30 desks and chairs set up - it looks like an exam room. There are lots of these rooms/sections in NCID. They allocate you a desk and you stay at your desk, except for going in to have an x-ray (adjacent room) or using the toilet. They give you a bottle of water and a pencil which you can fill a form out with.

The doctors see you at the desk. Blood tests, IV drip, COVID-19 swab are all done at the desk. There are lots of medical staff in the room, all fully fitted with gowns, goggles and masks.

They are likely to swab you for COVID-19. It's a pretty uncomfortable swab that goes down each nostril and wiggles in your throat until your eyes water. If the x-ray shows your lungs are clear and you are not severely ill then they will send you home to wait for the results. They subsequently issue you a notice to avoid leaving the house unnecessarily (not equivalent to a quarantine order/stay at home notice). They will not quarantine anyone else in your household if they experience no symptoms (obviously you can choose to). They then inform you to come back if you start feeling worse.

They will phone you in a few days with the results and to check up on your situation, but in the event they do turn out positive, I reckon you will probably be contacted much sooner as getting them results only take about 6 hours. You will also be given a follow up appointment at NCID in a few days' time and subsequent hospitalisation leave of 5 days. There is no cost incurred for any of the above except for a $10 fee attributed to the follow up appointment.

Once a patient leaves the NCID screening centre they completely clean and disinfect the desk, seat, floor etc, even throwing away the water and pencil the person used. It's really like a scene from Monster's Inc.
