It is rather competitive in school, and some teachers like to compare the GEP class with the mainstream classes. But this competitiveness is good, and encourages us to do even better. Within the class, it is possible to see that we try hard to get an A1 (which was not hard for the first test, but as the tests get more challenging…) getting an A2 is the goal for most people.

The teachers are very supportive, though sometimes it can be annoying when they get you to do ‘self-learning’ and speak indirectly when you ask for help because they do not want to ‘spoon-feed’. They are very open and encourage us to make appointments during recesses if we need extra help.

I’m the earliest sleeper in my class as I sleep at 10-10.30 most of the time. It might be because my travelling time is only 45 min or so and my CCA is not the kind that is very busy. (those hectic ones are mainly performing arts and some sports, the clubs and societies are more relaxed.

    • RE: Who choose the tuition teacher - you or your child?

      slmkhoo:
For teenagers, I think that any decision involving them should have their input. Parents can set major criteria and retain veto rights, but the student should also have a say in what sort of tuition, whether they feel the tutor is a good fit in terms of personality and teaching style etc.

i agree. As a student, I understand my learning needs better than anyone else. Of course, kiasu parents would never let the child completely choose by himself/herself. Perhaps they would speak with the teacher first. When deciding if i want to attend tuition, I make sure that my teacher is qualified, has good character and that the method of teaching is suited to me.

I'll definitely not want to get cheated by the teacher. :siam: :goodpost:

    • RE: When do you start looking for tuition teachers?

probably at the beginning of the year, but it depends on the child's abilities and whether he or she really needs the tuition. And it depends on the price too. :moneyflies:

For me, I don't believe in having a lot of tuition. Perhaps only for the weakest subject and if it suits the child's learning methods.

Confusing the child with tuition would only do harm.

      Hi all,

My dd applied for DSA (track and field) but was not short listed for interview recently.

Does that means she has absolutely no chance?

I hear from some source that some pupils may bypass the interview process and are given a place directly because of good trials ranking and good GAT result. Is this true?

      Please share. Thanks.

I heard , last year, there were some GEPs who got offer without interview. How did you know your DD is not shortlisted? the interview is still going on. Why not call them ?

last year, when I applied for DSA, i was in GEP and met the requirements (above 75/80 %). I received no news from them except for a notice that I was shortlisted (it took quite some time).

I'll say that its either confirmed or waiting list. My friends who were not accepted via GEP knew the results slightly earlier than those confirmed ones. 🕺 good luck!

hi, im a student in NYGH now. They do a lot to help weaker students with their Chinese. However, the learning system is not for the lazy and uninterested. My teacher gives a self-learning worksheet for each chapter in the textbook, which includes several practice questions and some links to good resources with quizzes to ensure that we fully understand the chapter. She does not require us to hand in such work, but she would go through the chapter roughly to clarify our doubts. She spends more time telling us stories in Chinese about China history (I learnt more during Chinese lessons than during History lessons) and general knowledge.

However, some students take this the wrong way. Instead, they see the lessons as \"no homework\" or \"do other homework\" or \"play phone time\". My teacher does not like to reprimand them, but also speaks to the class often about attitude.

The only reasons some students do not do well in Chinese is that they have the wrong attitude, do not put in effort, or that they are not strong in the language (not many, but they do try very hard to improve.)

      hope this helps 🙂
i've grown to love Chinese more than the language I use the most in conversations (English)
