    • RE: Animation course in polytechnic

      kiasuursula:
Thank you for the comments~ 😄

      Btw, I'm just wondering,
      based on last year COP,
NYP has a higher COP(18) than NP(15, I think), both courses are about the same, something do with animation and 3D arts,
then shldn't NYP has a lower COP since it would more of a popular choice in animation, looking at the number of awards they received. :?

Isn't it more competitive to get it?
(not judging the courses by their COP, just curious) :scratchhead:
To answer your question, you should not look at the COP to determine if it is a better course.

COP is the score of the last person who get into the course. Lets say Course A in XX poly have 200 intakes while in YY poly have 400 intakes. Naturally, YY poly would probably have a higher COP but that does not mean that YY poly is lousier as compared to XX poly.

Sometimes, among many other factors, people tends to go for the poly they like (or deemed to be reputable and good) instead of what the poly is good at. That also explained why some of the course, like Digital Media Design, as mentioned above have a higher COP.

My advice to you is not to let COP determines the choice of poly your are going into. Look at the awards they earn, the module descriptions on what you will learn etc. Low COP does not indicate best course, it just indicate the popularity among the applicants.

      Just my 2 cents.

    • RE: Regarding poly entry to local Uni

Actually as can be seen from the COP, entering Accountancy is not easy be it that your final choice is JC or poly. Both required excellent result. FYI, Accountancy is one of the most popular course in uni. So, you do have to work really hard.

Should you grade can’t enter accountancy in uni, there is still other options like SIM which would still lets you enter the field of accountancy.

Nanyang Poly is better in animation. If you track back the history, Nanyang Poly’s Digital Media Design have won many awards.

    • RE: 2 humantities in O level

Pure/CORE Geography might be easier to score as compared to combined hum/Geo Elective.

Pure geography in my time is make up of MCQs and short structured questions. Elective geography have essays questions.

    • RE: Help in D&T

He can always seek help from his teachers of technical instructors.

The D&T project, from another perspective, is a good way to drill the student in preparation for the real world or further education in polytechnic or university. He have to learn to cope somewhat.

    • RE: How to cope with child who failed Maths at Sec 3?

It will be better to ask your DS the performance of his cohort. Just based on the marks alone, he might be seems to score badly. However, in relation to the whole cohort, he might way above average. If that is the case, there is nothing to worry about, maybe it just that the paper is set to be a killer.

    • RE: Is it easier to go University via the Polytechnic Route?

It is not necessary easier to enter local university via the polytechnic route. However, to enter overseas uni like Monash, UNSW and such, it might be much more easier. I have a friend doing Banking and Finance in Monash Uni (Aust) with a GPA of around 2.9-3.0 (which is quite attainable). Futhermore, most overseas uni are quite generous in giving exemption to our local polytechnic diploma holders.

As for local university, it will be hard. No more than 15-20% of the people in each diploma are able to enter local uni(NUS,SMU,NTU), exclusing of those who applied under special talent. To enter hot and pristege courses like medicine, law and dentistry, only 1 or 2 is accepted each year currently. But, if one is able to enter uni using local polytechnic diploma, one can be expected to receive 0.5 to 1 year of handsome exemptions.

In recent years, with references to the IGP (aka cut-off-points) released by NUS,NTU and SMU, it is hard for both poly and jc student to enter local university.

    • RE: Temasek poly or Pioneer jc?

Depending on her interests. If she feel that a secondary school like environment will suit her better, then perhaps JC. Otherwise, Poly might be a better choice for her. She have to try finding out where her interest and strength lies in.

Do not be worry about her chance of going into university as a result of her ultimate choice. There are plenty of students who are able to enter local university, or even prestige university overseas like cambridge through either path (you can just do a google search).
