RE: Master Spelling - How many practices required?
yorkie:
This child has been exposed to phonics and is quite intelligent with good cognitive skill. The parents are very frustrated and highly stressed about with his academic results. They are pretty sure it's a concentration or poor memory issue rather than dyslexia. Hmm... sounds like ADD now.
You haven't stated the boy's age, but I presume that he is lower primary.
See if he is able to count backwards in two's from 20; likewise, see if he is able to recite the days of the week backwards. These are age-appropriate tests for concentration and short-term memory. If he can't do these tasks, then it is suggestive that he has some learning difficulty (but only suggestive).
In terms of learning English spellings, perhaps the parents can encourage him to employ multiple senses. For instance, he could walk up and down his room reciting out aloud the English words. Then he can try writing the words using differently-coloured pens - one word written in blue, one in red, one in green and so on. There is a deep purpose behind doing these: they stimulate different parts of the brain and give evidence about what's going on.
Hope it gets solved. -

If I try to be humorous and fail, then the fault is entirely mine, not yours. No need for sarcasm. For a moment I thought I'm supposed to believe that I don't have any sense of humor
because I did not take my dd's words with a pinch of salt

Hi, if I may share my experience... It is true tt GEP uses their own EL materials from P4 to P6 mid-year. They only begin to adhere to PSLE formats from P6 mid-year onwards. Likewise, my dc, who was e pioneer batch for the new EL paper 2 format, never practised it until a few months prior to PSLE. To them (& me), the new format is really much easier than their daily work. As for papers 1 & 3, they tend to study the new formats way ahead of their non-GEP peers.
Hi sky minecrafter.
GEP and non-GEP sit the same PSLE.Joy of Learning 111:
...dd2 said her p6 compre format is still the same as dd1's p6 compre 2 year ago. Maybe only for gep :scratchhead: For prelim she said format is different.
Thanks, that's very interesting and provides context.
Do you think that GEPers use their own materials till mid-year because they are focused on preparation for DSA tests? Once the DSA tests are over, they then switch to focus on the PSLE format? -

I believe I was trying to be humorous. Hopefully, light-hearted humour is not off-topic.
Huh why :scratchhead: I don't have any cause for concernJoy of Learning 111:
It is good to speak to daughters, but one should take what they say with a pinch of salt.
so weird why must doubt your own child for no reason
anyway :offtopic: you don't have to reply :siam: -

Comprehension was a major overhaul. For Open-Ended, new question forms were introduced such as tables, sequencing and true/false; and the Visual Text with a double-spread.
Actually not that much of an overhaul. Only oral and compo changed.janet88:
with every change, we don't know what to expect. when the english exam format changed, it was worrying too. my daughter is the 2nd batch. we can't do anything...just have to follow
dd2 is still able to use dd1's old syllabus English notes

RE: Is tuition absolutely needed from Sec 1?
janet88:
I am reminded of the Serenity Prayer:just thinking of it gives me a headache.
although we have done what we can, there is still a worry not knowing how she did and where she can go.
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Anyway, reading through your posts during the past year, I have gained the impression that there are few parents as attentive and involved in their child's well-being and education as you. Kudos to you! :rahrah: -
RE: Is tuition absolutely needed from Sec 1?
janet88:
Hi janet88english tuition is helpful as it is a different syllabus from primary 6.
my daughter will resume english tuition next month.
.
Hope the PSLE went well for your daughter.
Yes, it sometimes comes as a bit of a shock to many Sec 1 students how difficult English is. Interpreting the use of language for impact and summary writing tend to be particularly disliked. -
RE: Master Spelling - How many practices required?
yorkie:
In respect of English, sometimes drill and kill does indeed kill.Hi mummies
Asking on behalf of a friend about mastering English spelling or tingxie. How many practice(s) is/are required for your child?
English is an alphabetised sound-based language. The principal key to successful spelling is phonics, supplemented by awareness of syllabication and morphology. The danger of practising by writing out repeatedly is that the child will come to view English words as whole words or pictures, and hence it becomes a visual memory exercise rather than a decoding of sounds.
