RE: Comparing Enrichment Programme versus Private Tutor
My friend just hired a tuition teacher that is a current school teacher for her p6 girl…Each month is 600 dollars, that is 8 lessons, she told me, its only for 10 mths, so its worth the investment…is it a norm and does this really works?I thought from p5 onwards, one has to be more or less get prepared?thanks

RE: All About Full-Time Maids
our maid telling lies by using yr hse phone to call her cousin & friends to chit chat during the day she is doing the hse cleaning. When i reach home & find something fishy that i check on the phone, and ask her why got so many strange no. & she lies & tell that her church friends call her.
What I find easier to implement is to state clearly to the maid and make her agree to not using the house phone or owning a cell phone even before bringing her back from the agency. So it become part of the agreement if she wants to work for you.
Agree with tamarind that the maid probably won't change and you might need to get a new one. Had an ex maid who does that and chalk up my phone bills with calls too - turn out to be lots of strange men calling. Not giving the maid your home number or address is our policy too. In our case we got our agency to agree to use their address so that her family can send mail to her at the agency address.
Mincy
I have just email you,
Cheers

HiEnrichment or Tutor ?
It all voice down to your own child.
If your child is the attention seeking or those who cannot stay still for more than 5 minutes or those who are easily distracted, then individual tuition will be best. Else you may consider group tuition ( likely at homes ) or enrichment centre.
However, the teacher students ratio for enrichment centre is normally rather big either 1:10 or 1:20.
I have heard from some parents who sent their kids to this x-school teacher who specialise on Maths only. Her ratio is 1:4 or so and she is very skillful. Last year, there is this child who was P2 then, and the teacher feels that he is quite good and suggested coaching him on higher level. The mum agreed and that child scored full marks for SA2 last year and at that moment that teacher is already coaching that child materials of P3 level. The teacher is currently moving fast for him, coaching him P4 materials and preparing him for Gifted exam at no extra charge. Another parent who has a P6 child who is weak in problem sums and that teacher is guiding her more on word problems solving with model drawings . Her lessons are like 'Tailored to Measure' , depending on individual child .
She told me that the teacher charges $200 for every four lessons. If your child miss a lesson due to CCA or whatever reason, no fees will be deducted, which means your $200 will stretch for a longer period or you can arrange for makeup lesson. (Unlike enrichment centre, one will have to just forgo it, like my boy in Learning Lab - miss several lessons due to school matter.) Oh yes but one will need to pay $30 material fees which include assessment book, other school exam papers, etc.
My own boy is P6 Gifted program but I only put him in for English tuition at Learning Lab Gifted Program and another current school teacher ($400 for 4 lessons) for English Compo in my house. Feel that is rather expensive. But most enrichment centre does not cater for Gifted Program and I cant find any 'make to measure' tutor except one-to-one and Learning Lab.
Anyone knows of any specialise Good X-School English teacher or Current teacher offering 'tailor to measure' for English lesson and charging at reasonable price like the Maths teacher I mentioned. I am hoping to find one with small teacher-student ratio ( 1: 4 to 1:6) . Thanking you in advance.
Edason
I think 400 dollars for 4 lessons for creative writing alone is very expensive.I am also looking for a good english teacher just for creative writing but to no avail as most teachers want to teach everything in english, not just writing alone.
My girl loves to write but she is not exam based. If anyone has got good tutor to recommend, do let me know. Many thanks in advance...

Hi Kiasuchief
My daughter still far from graduating from schoolhouseJoy:
...Just wonder, anyone has kid that had already graduated from shool house by the bay and how are they doing in pri school.

Just wonder, what is the chinese standard difference in kinderland vs schoolhouse by the bay?Am actually hoping that I dont have to send my son to berries if I send him to school house by the bay...Heard that you send your dd to chinese enrichment...If you dont send , but solely rely on playschool itself, does it helps?
...
What I like about the service is their focus on learning through play. There are plenty of hands-on activities that they expose the child to that allow the child to see things creatively. I have noticed my child has gotten quite a bit more imaginative since she started schoolhouse.
With regards to Chinese, as I have said before, schoolhouse practices alternate English and Chinese speaking-days. The value of this is that the child is fully immersed in the language for that day, which means that they have to use the language for every activity they perform throughout the day.
However, I cannot say for certain if my girl's Chinese has improved due to that environment. We only started getting worried about her Chinese in April last year (she was 3 years old then), when she showed signs of hating the language despite our efforts to speak it to her. That was also before we sent her to Schoolhouse. We then sent her to Forever Education in Katong Mall, and subsequently to Berries and now in Yuquan. She can now speak the language confidently and initiates conversations in Chinese too, and knows quite a bit of 成语(not that she understands them, but the idea is really to get her used to the characters and sounds. So it is really the medley of activities we do, and not solely the result of one childcare service.
Thanks for sharing. My older girl graduated from kinderland, she does not speak a single mandarin till now, and she is still attending berries. Her written no problem, speaking as in oral only average...
At times, I wonder like one of my friend dd, even whole family does not speak mandarin, she also does not speak mandarin, but she is doing BICEP chinese, as in special chinese prog in GEP pri....
Honestly, I am still trying to figure out how speaking and writing are related....Just one cent of my thoughts. -

SAHM:
Hi sahm[Moderator's note: Topics merged.]
hi chief kiasu,
Read that your dd in this school, do you not worried that they are not preparing the child adequately for P1? I got a friend who pulled her dd out and go to PAt schoolhouse after she got feedback from K2 parent that her child did not \"learn anything\"? My friend dd attended from playgroup to nursery this year, was feeling anxious that her dd still \"playing\" and has not learn to write....she want to prepare her gal to RGPS
Any feedbacks from graduates from schoolhouse by the bay?
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing...
