    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

Hie everyone I desperately need HELP and glimpses of answer here ...

      Background :

I'm a stay home mum who have a 7 yr old son. I've been teaching him since young. He learns and pick up ideas and concepts fast. At 15 mths, he picks up his books to \"read\", 18 mths he talks, around 24 mths he could do puzzles after looking at them for a while ( visual ). Remembered very clearly, there's one occasion, in the morning, the first thing he'll do is to take out the puzzle i did with him the day before, and he'll insist i help him, and teach him. He'll do this everyday, til he's able to complete the whole puzzle within 15 mins ! the puzzle : a long one, that puts numeral, english words, and chinese character together as a column. From 1 - 20.

Learns music at 4 yrs old. Teacher say he has musical talent. He learns faster than others, he play fast, he picks up the nuisance of the music fast, and he could recognize the chords that teacher plays and play back. Til now he's able to focus and play back almosty exacty as the piano teacher play !

When he's 6, we brought him to the Child Development at KK Hospital, went to child doctor. Reason why i brought cause he's active ! Couldnt sit still, likes to fidget and daydream, dont seem to focus. However when teacher ask him, he's seems to know and could answer the question w right answer !
Means he's daydreaming, fidgetting but listening to teacher at same time !

Doctor couldnt say anything, ask for childhood educator give him a few class preparation lessons in preparation for p1. Her advice : tell the teacher that yr child need more challenging and stimulating works and questions to keep him going.

Now in P1, he likes to read History and Geography. He's well read with all kinda subjects that interest him.
Teacher say he's very strong foundation in both English and Maths.

I'd also noticed he's more mature than friends his age, and most times doesnt really go along well w his classmates. Usually he plays better with children 2 yrs his age or girls.

And yes, he articulate and speaks well.

There's a few occasions in this year he asks me to homeschool him instead of him going to school. Said he'd known what teacher taught cause mummy had taught him. ( Maths tutor said P2 Maths would be more challenging for him. ) He's bored !

I'm worried that he'll not listen if I teach him in school. Thats what happened too when he's in K1 and K2 ! I dont want the cycle to continue again and again !

      We seriously need help !

Should I bring him for IQ test ? If so, where ? Then what will happens next ?

    • RE: Edgefield Primary

      Hie

My boy is in Edgefield Primary P1 his year.

Id u’re living within 1 km or even 2 or 3 km of the school, there’s no balloting required. All applicants go in. This is so for the last few years.WOuldnt know for the next few yrs tho’

However, if u’ve noticed the Parents Support Group of this school is … bad ! Dont dream of having an active support group in school or discussion over the forum. The school however do occasionally organise seminars and talks for parents on how to help their kids in their academics studies.

The only good thing of this school :

      1. after school care in the school - but yr kid gotta eat at the canteen everyday.
      2. Have a wide range of ECA and other form of enrichment activities.
      3. QUite active in sports.
      4. For P1 and above, they provide different aspects of music education to the students.

SOmehow the list of what are good are listed here. However, somehow, I dont feel any soul to this school. Dont ask me why.

      hie everyone

i just send my son to the Student Health Centre at HPB Refraction Clinic today and he was diagnosed with myopia of 100 and 125 degree.

When I went in there they dont use the heavy equipment that I usually use at my optometrist to check my eye sight. Use the simple machine where we placed our chin and the normal reading out of the letters.

      Are these readings accurate ?

Has anyone’s children been referred there and given a spectacles prescription from them ?

Thank u so much for sharing

    • RE: [Seng Kang] Primary Schools

U checked out their website loh !

The principal also very chinese traditional and community-bonded wan ho !
Any community activities, u’ll probably be seeing them around !

ECA and CCA ? There’s practically nothing for them to boast abt !

STILL … I wont strike this school out for the sake of their academics, other than that … sigh …

I’m still waiting for someone to enlighten me on my choices !

      Hie

I'v a boy who'll be P1 next year, YET I've not really decided where to put him !

AFter having done some talking w some very proud school admin in my vicinity. I stayed in Punggol, I've narrowed my focus to :

Montfort Junior ( in Hougang ) - loves the ECA and CCA there but travelling distance from there back to Punggol is almost 1 hr. By time my boy back it'll be at least 2.30 pm ! Way off his lunch time ! He'll probably faint in the bus ! On the other hand I could train him to eat some snacks on the bus back.

Rivervale Primary ( in SengKang ) - within 1 km of my place, got volunteer for only 5 hrs but stopped for a while caused of rumours that the school will only accepts PV w the HIGHEST hours clocked ! I was shocked ! Am I supposed to go chiu for volunteer time w other parents ? Then the school really treating us as suckers and free labour loh ! Really dont feel good ! :x Only reason I choose school cause it's one of good school in my vicinity ! But lousy ECA and CCA !

Edgefield Primary School ( my place downstairs ) - simple reason downstais only. Hubby say can watch out what kinda friends my boy mixes with and the kinda ppl he knows. One strong pt of this school is strong in sports that's all ! Others just okay and mediocre, even though I heard some ppl say they're improving in their activities. But ECA and CCA only starts in Pr 4 ! 😛

My boy is currently in Yamaha JXC and is pretty strong in musical background. I'd liked it if his school also has a solid base in music so that he will not lose touch , in case he decied to stop once finish his 4 yrs course, which would have finished during his P1.
He's also very active, sociable, and finally he really prefers to talk and make friends w girls ! yea, that's the area where mummy's worried abt ! Whether they'll become a distraction for him in his academic career !

      😞 :?:

SOmeone please help me out here plsssss ! REally in dead end now ! DOnt know where to go next ! Or should I just apply for all 3 schools in his P1 apllications ? SO whoever who takes him, he'll go into the school ? However, the 3 I've chosen is like high chances of getting in wan. AM I right ? Can someone comment on this too ?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU ! 🙏
