Secondary Maths is rather different from Primary Maths as the focus is more on algebra. No more Maths modeling required. Thankfully the Sec Maths questions seem more straightforward than Pri Maths.

My girl used to attend Leapfrog ST sessions once a wk when she was 2yr+. After abt 6 mths we stopped the sessions due mainly to cost reason and also the lack of much progress for my girl. They changed the speech therapist twice so I can't remember their names.
Thereafter we approached KKH for assistance and we realized the long waiting time for each session. Fortunately they recommended us to try checking with a few centers and we chose SPD@Tiong Bahru. Each session is more affordable at $60+ for 45mins. Initially we started with weekly sessions and now my girl is attending monthly sessions at the advice of the ST. My girl is now 4yr+ and she has improved a lot

You may wish to check with KKH for other cheaper alternatives. I'm sure your child will grow up to be happy and chirpy like mine. All the best!

Give your child 1-2 months break after yr-end exams. Then get a good tutor to start around Dec before the new year.

Yup i agree that there are plenty of choice for tutors or tuition centres. There is no such thing as the best tutor in town as each has his or her strengths. 1-1 or group tuition offer different benefits and caters to different needs. whatever the choice, a good tutor must be committed and responsible, among other attributes.

MOE is reviewing the PSLE format so let’s hope they will reduce the emphasis on rote learning/ pure memory techniques and focus more on logical thinking process which makes more sense to the child’s healthy development.

Thanks very kiasumummy, I will consider my DD for both tuition when she is in P5. I also feel school only touch & go they go through little but expect the kids to answer wonders. Very worried for our young kids no childhood now. Sigh !

I feel that sometimes school has no time to finish teaching everything. Then no choice, kids got to take their exams already. Anyway, I try to arrange for my kids to have tuition on weekdays then weekend will bring them out.

You are right. Sometimes my students mention that the school could not cover the topics in time and had to rush through them. In the end they have to rely on tutors to enlighten them. I have a student who always looks relieved after every tuition session and walks away with a smile

I subscribe to Sun’s viewpoints which are well thought.


With regards to maths, I wonder how some students manage to handle challenging qns (such as speed) while the majority struggle even with repeated explanations from teachers. Could it be due to the studying style (eg rote learning) as compared to logical thinking process which the MOE hopes to encourage?

Generally private tuition is more effective than group tuition as there is 1-1 focus on the student. Hence it is typically more expensive than group tuition. You should choose full time private tutors if you are concerned about long term commitment. All the best!

The above type of P/L qns typically require a clear understanding of how to apply the cost base (ie 100%) correctly, and changing the base appropriately.

I just joined as a newbie yesterday so I guess it might be too late for the solution you wanted. Nevermind I'm happy to share my workings as follow:

Let x be the % of loss or profit.
1st selling price (at a loss of x%) = (100-x)/100 * 540,000 = 5400 (100-x)
2nd selling price (at a profit of x%) = [5400 (100-x)/ 100] * (100+x) = 535,000
Simplify: 54 (100^2 - x^2) = 535,000
Solve for x => 9.62%
Hence, price that Mr Ong paid (1st selling price) => $488,052
