Hi everyone,
This thread has gotten rather lengthy, but there is one point I would like to point out.
Here's the article from the Straits Times, and I've bolded the portion which I find rather important to this discussion.
\"One of Singapore's biggest independent churches has been ordered by the Government to compensate a female church worker fired because of her alleged adulterous relationship.
The female employee at Faith Community Baptist Church (FCBC) had gone to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) after she was sacked last September when the church found out she was pregnant with the child of another church employee.
The ministry said that it looked into the complaint and found that the woman was \"dismissed without sufficient cause within six months of her delivery date\".
The church did not give her the salary and maternity benefits she was entitled to under the Employment Act.\"
The lady in question was committing adultery with a male church employee. Both church employees were committing adultery and both did not repent as they continued their relationship despite Pastor Khong's words.
However, only the pregnant employee was terminated, while the male adulterer was allowed to continue working for the church.
The reason why MOM imposed such a law in Singapore was to prevent employers from discriminating against pregnant woman by not paying them maternity benefits the moment it was revealed they were pregnant.
As such, given the fact that only the pregnant employee was terminated, it seems that the church is not sacking her because she committed adultery, but because they did not want to pay for her maternity benefits.
Many mothers here would agree with me that this is blatant discrimination from the church. Put yourself in her shoes for a moment, and realize that if the church was really about upholding moral values and moral standards, they would have fired both employees, and not only the pregnant employee.

i) Mass of Particles = 3*((1/2)^(12t/10))Hi, I need help on the following question. Can somebody please help?
The mass of particles of a certain radioactive chemical element is halved every 10 months. During a chemical experiment, the initial mass of particles of the chemical element is 3mg.
i) write down an expression, in terms of t, for the mass of particles after t years.
(ii) Hence, find the value of t, if the mass is reduced to 0.046875 mg after t years.
TIA.
To reach this step, draw our a table with two columns, one for \"t\" and the other \"x, Mass of Particles\". Fill up around 3 or 4 rows of values.
e.g. t=0, x=3
t=10/12 (twelve months in a year), x = 3*(1/2)
t=2(10/12), x=3*(1/2)*(1/2)
Notice that I did not simplify the values - this is so that we can ascertain patterns upon observation
You will realize that for every increase in (10/12)t, the x value is multipled by (1/2)
ii) Sub in mass of particles = 0.046875
0.046875 = 3*((1/2)^(12t/10))
0.015625 = (1/2)^(12t/10)
Ln both sides
Ln(0.015625) = Ln((1/2)^(12t/10))
= (12t/10)Ln(1/2)
(12t/10)= (Ln(0.015625))/(Ln(1/2))
= 6
t = 5
// to double check answer, take 3 and half it five times
3*((1/2)^5) = 0.046875

:thankyou: justmewayne and wish u a merry Xmas too!!!
haha one more thing to add regarding the lunch situation:
The queues in the RI Canteen can get very long after school during lunch. The most popular alternative would be to eat at J8, but fast food can be pricey. Your son may want to eat at S11 coffeeshop (along the way to J8) instead, where the queues are shorter and food is cheaper. There is even a chicken rice stall that gives students additional rice there. -
RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)
Been some time since I checked this thread.
First of all, would like to congratulate and welcome all the new members of the RI family (parents and sons).
I wish you all the best in your 4 year journey through the Secondary side.
Now to answering some queries:
Regarding the Mother Tongue workbooks, I don't recall ever buying or using them. Teachers have only used the textbooks. In the off-chance that your son's teacher requires the book, he will be given prior notice, so just let your son purchase the book from the bookshop if need be.
Regarding the AEP, there will be a selection test for applicants, but I highly doubt that he will be rejected if he wants to join (not like Music where you must be Grade 4). The important thing to consider is whether he enjoys Art, and whether he is able to cope with an additional subject. However, since you mentioned that he does some Art and Craft with you for leisure, the former should not be a problem.
Do shoot me with some more questions, and Merry Christmas! -
BCML - comments?
Hello, would like to get some feedback/comments regarding my preferred subject combi of BCM + L. Mainly is about taking Lit over Econs. I noticed that Econs is not necessary for admission into any faculty in local Uni (even Uni Econs only require Math). However, will it affect my application to overseas Uni and government scholarships? I chose Lit as I am confident of scoring well in this subject, and have a strong passion for this subject.
Thanks! -

Yes walked to gate 1 also to show my ds .....verykiasu2010:
This morning took my ds to take public transport to RI and realised tt the gate facing the Bishan road is only open from 5.45 am to 7.45 am during school days.
Gate 1 which is round the corner is always open / manned with with guardhouse
I assume you are referring to the gate at the bus stop that serves buses 156, 13, 57, 59, etc? Your son will be able to enter outside of the 5.45 - 7.45 timeslot with a registered EZ-Link card (notice the card scanner located at the right side of the gate). By the first 2 weeks of January your son's card should be registered and he'll have access.
Besides, if your son is exiting school, it's always open from the inside.
Also, it's good that you're letting your son be independent and take public transport. -
RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)
Hi MandyMummy, my batch did not go through the gap semester. However, my juniors (Year 4s next year) will be experiencing it next year. From what I have heard, they will either have Overseas Immersion Programme, Work Exposure, or a modified Differentiated Modules Programme.

thanks! for non-sports CCAs, are musical CCAs the only core CCAs which have sessions on Saturdays? how about raffles player? TIA.
Not all musical CCAs have Saturday sessions. In fact, correct me if wrong, but Choir is the only Music CCA that has a Saturday session. I do think that detailed information is under the CCA section on the school website.
almost end of Febverykiasu2010:
Hi,
Anyone know normally untill when will the Sec 1 pupil know about which CCA he has been assigned to?
you will receive the schedule for the CCA trail on registration day and work from there, attending the exhibition, going for compulsory trials for sports core CCA, then submitting the choices of CCA by internet ......
Raffles Players does not have Saturday sessions. However, they have Tuesday/Thursday sessions if I recall correctly. -
RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)
firefly38, your son may want to consider Raffles Players (Drama) and Raffles Debaters too. Both are now considered Core CCAs.
