May I ask what other core Musical CCAs, besides Band, are available at RI? Most probably, my DS has to join a core CCA from the Musical group, as he is not interested (& no good) in Sports. He also doesn’t like to join Uniform Groups, as he must march under the hot sun & become sweaty. He has Piano Theory & Practical, both Grade-5, both Distinctions… and he likes to sing. Can he join The Choir or String Ensemble, if they are available at RI? Thanks very much!!!

Hi, this is naggo-nitemare's DS.

The music CCAs are Military Band, Raffles Voices (choir), String Ensemble Chinese Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble.

However, military band (as the name suggests) is sort of half UG in the sense that they have to march.

Chinese orchestra takes in many people, regardless of whether they learnt music beforehand, however, I think people with music background have an advantage. In the audition, they also tested for perfect pitch.

String ensemble takes in about 2-4 for each section each year. They only accept people with music background. This (approximately) sums up to about 6 violinists (there are 2 violin sections), 3 violists, 3 cellists and 3 double bassists. For the audition (this year), each person had to play a piece (own choice).

For choir, it was singing happy birthday and also some testing of vocal range.

Not sure about other two.

Please note that you can only put 3 musical groups in the cca selection form so choose wisely. More info will be given during the core cca trail during the orientation camp.

firefly38, your son may want to consider Raffles Players (Drama) and Raffles Debaters too. Both are now considered Core CCAs.
