You can appeal to any choice (or even one that you didn't choose). Whether the school listens to your appeal and accept you or not, is a different matter.

Thanks kiasuparents lor for the information. In this case, does that student still participate in the S1 posting while waiting for outcome of the appeal? if the student still do the S1 posting, he obviously has to put that school he DSA-ed as his/her first choice?

Tricky.
If he puts it as first choice, then he can have 2 appeals: DSA and S1. If DSA appeal failed, can still appeal S1 (assuming he didn't get it).
If he doesn't put the DSA school in any of the choices, he will not be able to appeal via the S1 posting failure.
You appeal DSA immediately when the PSLE results are out. You appeal S1 when the S1 posting results are out. So if you failed to get a place during the DSA appeal, you still can try again after S1 posting is out. You will have a better feel when you get your PSLE results cause you know your chance for S1 appeal, eg 1 point off or 5 or 10. Best to check with the school.

I attended the HCI briefing for parents yesterday (first hand account).


During the briefing, HCI said that 200 students have been given CO. I did a quick count and there were about 40 families, hence I guess HCI has probably given WL1 to 50 students.

The teacher (Ms Sandra) said that the students on CO and WL1 are those that HCI would really like to take in, if not for logistics constraints. She assured that the students on WL1 are no less deserving than those on CO.

The VP then said that the school \"guarantees\" all students on WL1 to be admitted to HCI, if they put HCI as their first choice in the DSA exercise. The \"guarantee\" system works in this way:

1. Historically, all students on WL1 who puts HCI as first choice have been given CO finally under the DSA exercise. (For those on WL2, a small minority of them may be disappointed in the end.)

2. In the unlikely event that those students on WL1 are not given CO, on the day of the announcement of DSA results which is also the PSLE results day, inform the school immediately and HCI will admit the student under the \"discretionary\" (appeal) route for PSLE posting. The VP clarified that any student who is admitted under this route will only need to meet the minimum T-score of 200.

I don't remember HCI saying that you cannot put another school in second choice under the DSA exercise. It all boils down to which school you want your child to go to. If you like HCI, put it as first choice and you will get what you want, since the school guarantees it.

Finally, to all parents out there who do not have CO or WL, please give all possible support and encouragement to your DC. There is still 50% of the vacancies left for grab! Good Luck to All!

No. The results of the appeal may be after S1 posting. If you are successful, you take the results, go to your S1 posted school and give it to the admin. They will do the necessary paperwork to transfer you to your DSA school.

Ms Sandra gave a t score of 250 or higher for appeal cases under wl2 list. It was also shown on the slides she represented. Hmmm.. y such a big difference from 200 for wl1...

I find it rather strange that wl1 are no less deserving than those on CO and school would even admit them under appeal route if their psle t-score is 200 , but yet CO is not given due to logistic issues. Any idea what is the logistic constraint?

And if the school clarified that any student in wl1 admitted under appeal route need only to meet the minimum t-score of 200, does it mean that if a student’s t-score is 200, the school would still admit them under appeal route? This is quite astonishing to know as all along I had the idea that appeal cases are those with t-score that are very close to COP. HCI is so confident that all their WL1 will be converted that it does not matter what number they say, T-score of 200 or 250. But I guess they did not realise that it would impact those on WL2 when this information is available online ! :roll:

After all, they did say that it's discretionary and the principal has the final say. And once, it's on appeal, it's no longer based on ranking, there is no automatic conversion. The principal once said that if a teacher would want to bring in a student very good in a sport but weak in studies for DSA, the principal wants the teacher to commit that he/she is able to get the student to go through the system and graduate from HCI. So I think the principal would do the same in the appeal if a student gets 201 T-score, right ? If the principal has a face to face interview with the student to understand what happen to his score and assess his true potential and fit for HCI.. :salute:

My take away from the whole DSA exercise is that it's not just about the school and the student. It's also about competition between schools for the student. So I wonder if the reason for HCI to create 2 WL could be that they place those potentially opting for other schools on WL1 and those potentially opting for HCI on WL2 ? One of the strengths of HCI is Chinese but when it comes to DSA, it's also her weakness as many students would not want to take up higher Chinese. So could it be that they place those doing better in Chinese on WL2 knowing that they would still select HCI even when they are WL2 ? Just thinking aloud....

BTW, heard one principal speaking about gifted students. Said they have special needs as they learn differently from the MS students. They were portrayed as vulnerable species. They way it was said, sounded like they have some form of handicap… was rather funny !

Do you think MOE should conduct the Oral mid year. Release the results and let those that score below a certain mark redo their oral closer to the PSLE ?
