      Dear all,

My DS is very upset with his Chinese oral today. Base on what I heard, yesterday's picture and conversation are easier. My DS's classmates also lamented the same thing.

It's really unfair for kids taking PSLE today. I can only console my DS to move on. The ministry should really make sure the standard of oral exam is consistent for the 2 days. Else make all pupils sit for English on Day 1, then sit for Mother Tongue on Day 2. That is the best way to ensure consistency!

It would be ideal to have one set of pictures and conversational topics and every student takes the oral exam on the same day. However, there are resources constraint. The English Teachers cannot conduct the oral exam for Chinese and vice versa.

Currently, we require two days of oral exam. To do all in one day, it would mean that the oral exam would last for one full day and probably have four sessions. To have the same picture and topic tested, all the students would have to be quarantined until the last group of students started the exam. The examiners would have to work for one full day. Is this ideal? Is it ideal for students of first session to be quarantined till late afternoon? Is it ideal for examiners to get too tired in the afternoon?

I may sound selfish but in my opinion this (quarantining the child for long hours and teachers working late for one day) is better as that would give the opportunity for all the students to take the same oral paper. If there is no T-score, bell curve all those things, the current system is fine.

It does not mean I am cruel and asking our kids to stay late in the school. Just for one day and assume they are having supplementary lessons on that day. Anyway it is over. We move on.

As I mentioned earlier, it is my personal view. I too can talk in a politically correct way but I like to give my honest opinion.

Do you think MOE should conduct the Oral mid year. Release the results and let those that score below a certain mark redo their oral closer to the PSLE ?

My DS also sat for Day 2 Mother Tongue Oral, and is still upset about it.

After hearing from his classmates who did on Day 1, he was even more upset coz he felt that he knew what to say for the Fast Food Restaurant & could have scored if that was given to him. And Mother Tongue oral is 25% of the total !!

The preparatory materials that his school & the enrichment centre gave has all sorts of scenario except home, so he was completely unprepared with nothing to say. And he has learnt all sorts of vocab lists, even difficult ones, but none on the kitchen. So he couldn't describe things like stove, frying pan etc 😞

The feeling is as if the whole year of preparation had gone to waste.

Haiz, can't do much now. I can only encourage him to work hard for the other components.

Do the schools give a T-score calculation base on the kids’ prelim results? DD’s results are streaming in but we are not sure if it is a norm for schools to do that. I know it will not be accurate but at least it will be a guide.

I remembered during my kids' time, I bought LC practice books from Popular, my kids practised from the CDs.

Additionally, I got Longman LC book for her to have a 'feel' on the exam format.
