RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
Just a quick note after DD’s 1st 2 weeks:
1. Orientation was fun. Parent Briefing was detailed & well-organised.
2. Reasonably flexible: students have some flexibility with school shoes, some grooming options, etc. Good for the development of an individual hurtling towards adulthood.
3. Curriculum is very interesting - science & maths are accelerated, but there is sufficient exposure to the humanities, languages, etc. DD is absolutely sure she is in the right place.
4. Great variety of CCA, electives, etc - little competition for enrollment.
5. Although the population of boys is high, she feels that they are OK & not ‘creepy’.
Great to see a student highly motivated by her environment, mentors (teachers), friends, curriculum, etc. -

The selection process is meritocratic & rigorous.
If they have the aptitude and good life skills (able to plan, self-disciplined, open to new ideas, etc.), they should be able to do well at NUSHS and have a unique & enriching school life that could lead to very interesting occupations in the future. -

There were more than 600 candidates at the 1st stage from just the NUSHS test center. I wonder how many more were at the other centers.
If 160 students get through to the Camp round & if they select 153 - the success rate is high. However, if there are a lot more students in the 2nd stage - then we are looking at a nail-biting finish! Too much stress from anticipation!! -

My DD & her classmate are through to the Camp round. I wonder how many will be selected at the camp stage? What is the success rate? Sufficient cause to celebrate after the seemingly long wait. Phew!
