My daughter once tried the Grotrian Upright and Grand at Pianomaster. She loved the Grand so much. In fact, we all loved it. I would buy that Piano if I have another chance. waiyean, did you get the Grand or Upright? Good choice, anyway!

Hi KKKS,
Yes, I got the grand, model Grotrian Cabinet 192.
I am soooo looking forward to its delivery....

Really envy you!!!!!!

Is it the piece in the showroom? My daughter kept telling me that that is the best Grand she has played. We have in fact tried quite a number. I also think it is one of the best. Somehow, the acoustic seems very good at PianoMaster. My daughter would be sad if I were to tell her that it was gone! Haha! But come to think of it, can we go to play at your place? Just kidding!

So, who is the lucky one in your house to own this piano?

We tried the Petrof-P135 and P125. Personally, I would go for P135 as it is value for money (at that time). I liked its mellow tone but my daughter thought it was a bit muffled.

We happened to trial the Schimmel C130 and C124 sometime back. The displayed Schimmel C130 was crystal clear and sweet.

Clay569, it is a matter of choice between Petrof and Schimmel. Both are good piano.

• RE: Opinions on changes to PSLE

To sidetrack even further, I think our schools are being run like corporates nowadays. I know well how a corporate is run. The CEO will formulate strategies to achieve his KPIs. The big chunk of his perks will be tied to the top line, bottom line, margins, share price, etc. This can be socially or morally wrong at times - look at the SMRT case.

If the principal is rewarded by how many As students produced, number of competitions won, etc, he will be motivated to "grab" talents from other schools to maximise his returns. I know there is a national youth table tennis player was successfully transferred from a neighborhood school to a top primary school at P4. That top primary school is likely to win the national champion this year. But is that what we want to see?

All the stress we endure now is a result of the policy. In Chinese :

上有政策下有对策。
解铃还须系铃人。

I hope that the ministry will re-look at our education system. List down the priorities of the eduction - remember never reward the principal by the number of As students produced - this is not the fundamental of education.
Let me sidetrack a little.

Let's try to answer the following questions :

- who will be the president scholars this year ? (My answer : definitely there are students from RJI, and perhaps HJI)

- who are the members of the World Maths/Physics/Chemistry/Biology Olympiad team ? (My answer : definitely there are students from RJI, and perhaps HJI )

- which school is the overall champion of the sports events ? (My answer : RJI)

The list can go on. I am a parent too. Given a choice, I would definitely want my kids to go to RJI or HJI. I will think of all possibilities (tutions, tutions for GEP, DSA, special training in sports, etc) in order to maximize the chance for my kid. This comes the stress.

I could recall during my school days, the top positions of any competitions, whether academics or sports, could be from either of the schools below, just to named a few :

- RI
- SJI
- ACS
- RGS
- Nanyang
- Dunman High
- RV
- Chung Cheng High
- St Nic
- Catholic High
- Chinese High
- SCGS
- ACS
- Maris Stella
- Anglican High
- Tanjung Katong

Any of them has some chance to win. That made the school competitions more fun and interesting that way. Our stress level at that time was far lower than the kids now.

I think we have gone overboard by too much differentiating and labeling. Perhaps it is time to re-look at GEP program. Also, the ministry could look into putting in policy to restrict DSA program.

To make people believe that ALL SCHOOLS ARE GOOD SCHOOLS, the ministry could impose compulsory limitations of the % of students the school can enroll based on the PSLE score. For instance :

For those 1% of cohorts score 270 and above. Each school can only be allowed to take in 5% maximum of this band of students.

The next 1% of cohorts score 266 - 269. Each school can only be allowed to take in 5% maximum of this band of students.

The list goes on.

This is just an example. With this, we will have a more even distribution of the students among schools. We will have more lively and healthy school competitions.

Boy, I do miss the good old days...

Just wondering aloud the logic , so if I got 270, i would not stand a chance of getting into say RGS, but If I got 269 I will surely get in?

Good point.

Perhaps, to make the process less confusing, MOE could just widen admission thru DSA. This will allow a more diverse range of students with different strength, not merely academic, to get into the so-called top schools.
I am just trying to initiate a discussion. The whole idea is to reduce the stress level of both parents and students.

During my time, if you were a slightly above average student, you would have no problem in studying in any of the schools I mentioned above. But now, as someone mentioned, you would not be able to survive in RI or HCI if you were not in the top 3%. I am OK if this kind of competition happened in University level - such as MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, Tsinghua, etc. But differentiation at this early stage can be unhealthy.

Is Grade 6 theory much more difficult than Grade 5 theory? Or is it just slightly more advanced than Grade 5 theory?

I know of a girl who took 6 months (thereabout) to prepare for the Grade 6 theory exam and scored a distinction. She was in P4 when she took the exam. Is this also common for certain groups of students? Is taking Grade 8 theory exam generally encouraged? What are the benefits of taking the exam?

Paiseh, seldom hear people discuss about Grade 6 and above theory exams. Hoping to find out more about these exams.
My dd spent about 15 months in total to complete Grade 6 - 8 syllabus with a private teacher. She just sat for the Grade 8 exam in March this year.
