      pellias:
1 quick question on Sentence Combining using While

Betty was singing a song. Betty was playing in the garden.

      A) Betty was singing a song while she was playing in the garden.

      B) Betty was singing a song while playing in the garden.

Is A or B more correct ? I think both seems to be ok, but teachers always are very particular about 1 model answer...

      Hi pellias,

I agree with the above. The answer would very likely be (A) as when it comes to Synthesis and Transformation, you need to be precise in your answer without changing the meaning. Option (A) is the better answer as it replaces ‘Betty’ with the pronoun ‘she’ to make it unambiguous. The conjunction ‘while’ is used to indicate that the two separate clauses occur at the same time and done by the same person in this case.

    • RE: Q&A - PSLE English

Students (and even adults) of all ages make grammatical errors every now then which may seem trivial but in fact essential to take note and correct.

One of the most commonly made mistakes is the choice between ‘I’ and ‘me’. For example:
      1) Felix and I/me enjoy watching movies.
      2) Mummy baked cookies for Henry and I/me as we were planning to head to the park.

There is a very simple rule that you can follow, which is the ‘COVER-UP RULE’.

In the 1st example, to decide whether it’s ‘I’ or ‘me’, cover or remove the phrase ‘Felix and’. You will then realise that ‘I’ is the answer.
Similarly for the 2nd example, cover or remove ‘Henry and’. You will see that ‘Mummy baked cookies for me’ and not ‘Mummy baked cookies for I’.

Cover/Remove the additional person in the question and you will find the answer. Piece of cake! 😉

    • RE: PSLE science question is tough for kids

      Dear Parents,

I do understand the frustration from most parents that generally school teachers (Disclaimer: This may not apply to all schools) are not emphasizing much on Science, more often than not using Science lessons for other subjects. Teaching Science is minimal and yet exam questions require more analytical way of answering questions in a scientifically-approved manner.

As parents, the anxiety heightens when children can’t seem to have a breakthrough in the answering techniques, lest scoring well for examinations especially students who are taking PSLE.

In a nutshell of how to answer open-ended questions:

      (1) Understanding concepts thoroughly(important and not solely rely on memorising as I believe it is a killer to adopt as exam techniques)

      (2) Concept-mapping (It helps to link keywords and phrases as a brain process to answer questions.)

      (3) Keywords in questions (Take note of the keywords/clue in questions to guide in answering questions)

      (4) Familiarity of questions (Important to do consistent revision and practice to get maximum exposure on the different types of questions asked. Some questions may look similar but worded differently to test students.)

      (5) Always work on the mistakes made. (Through experience, students learn from their mistakes and refrain from making the same mistakes. This is one of the best way of learning. Quality work beats having quantity work which does not equate to scoring well for exams.)

Lastly, do not neglect Section A (MCQ) which proves to be an essential key to scoring A*.

There are so much more for elaborations but I shall keep it simple here.
      All the best! 😃
