i hope you will sleep well tonight after the frenzy today! Just another update, I know someone who got into NGH at 258 + 2. So can amend your list...(currently at 263)....
Maybe that person's primary school is affiliated to Nanyang Girls' High...

Found this in the RGS discussion thread:

      unflappable_chicken:
      hey(:

      i'm a sec2, going on sec 3 next year.
life at rgs isnt that stressful but can be quite packed
there are \"peak seasons\" when we have close deadlines for PTs (performance tasks), with SAs coming up. To top it off, there are always the cca sessions that end late with third language classes to go for on other days.
Thats why many rgs girls sleep as late as 12pm+ or 1pm++ on weekdays.
But with effective time planning, sleeping late can be avoided:D

      The teachers are quite caring(:
Honestly the Chinese standard isnt too good at RGS. There are of course people who excel in Chinese, but mainly they were from PRC or are locals who really read a lot of Chinese materials (eg. newspapers, articles)

The Lit book for year 1.. if I'm not wrong, I think we had to buy a book called \"A Sense of Belonging\" which is a collection of short stories and a book of poetry called \"Appreciating Poetry\".

For those who were sports-dsa students, they are not all grouped in the same class.
there were 13 classes for my level

the no. of pe lessons depends on whether its an odd-week/even week
sometimes it's one lesson, sometimes it's two lessons.

      hope this helps(:
the chinese standard in RGS is not that high...

Lit text for Sec 1 in 2008 – To Kill A Mocking Bird. You have to check booklist to make sure.

:!: OMG, they are still using this book for literature???? I think I still have this book stashed somewhere in my books collection. This was and still is one of my favourite books. Having said this, I would think over so many years, so many award winning books could make it to the literature list, so I am shocked to know that this is still the same literature book I used to study at Sec 1.

haha, maybe because it has become a classic already

Some people mentioned that the chinese standard at RGS isn't too good, & my dd had chosen NYGH over RGS partly for this reason.

i was told that in rgs, the girls there don't use mandarin to communicate as it is deem \"low class\" by them (unless during chinese lesson).

      Oh my! \"Low Class\"?!

I think NanYang Girls High is better. Those students who are eligible to study in NYGH are definitely capable of using english and chinese fluently (or else they can't enter this school). Thus, you don't have to worry about your dd have problems with english once she entered the school. šŸ™‚

But weather in Singapore is usually above 28 or 29 degrees. Sometimes it can hit between 30 to 32. Furthermore, our climate is very humid.

So, air-conditioners is a must have.
Cannot lah, later the kids will become very spoiled. If the classrooms are all air-conditioned, global warming will be more serious. The events in the movie 2012 will become real... (scary thought)

      daisyt:
hi xxjustakidxx, 257 is a good score, don't need to feel disgrace. In all kinds of exam, there are many X factors in it and some are beyond your control and awareness. You are cancelling two schools off your list, but don't forget, there are still so many options for you. If you are really so persistance to go RI or Dunman, do extremely well in your Sec 1, get all the A1s and you still stand a chance to transfer to your \"preferred\" school in year 2. But who knows, after spending 1 year in your posting school, you might love it so much that you do not wish to transfer. You might meet many wonderful friends and teachers, with a good CCA of your choice. Then you would forget about your \"preferred\" school. I fully understand your feeling because my daughter was like that. But now, she is so happy with the posting school and life is beautiful for her. šŸ˜„

I don't think you are in the worst case because definately in some part of the world, there are always others worse than you.
Don't feel sad, let auntie give you a hug :hugs: As daisyt sasys, you can still go to your dream schools if you work hard in Sec 1.Anyway, life is not all about studying. It is also about picking yourselves up after falling down so that you can continue striving for success. šŸ™‚

      caroline3sg:
My girl had A for Chinese, Merit for HMT but the letter did not state she is eligible for HMT in sec sch. Instead 3rd lang option of Malay & bahasa Indo is given. I asked MOE why. She said can apply in sec sch during registration, this is not classified under appeal.

I asked 3rd choice sch and the Malay teacher said must go through a compo test (after asking if my girl got A* for Chinese and what grade she got for Eng, btw she got A for Eng). Don't know whether to trust her or not.
Maybe it's not the top 10% of the cohort eligible for the HMTL, maybe it's Top 9% or Top 8%.

I think only the TOP 10% of the cohort are eligible for French, Japanese and German. šŸ™‚

My sincerest apology for making a mess of the requirements to do HCL at Sec.

Nevertheless, the important fact that I was trying to put across is that taking HCL at Sec and passing it will save the agony of having to do Chinese at JC.

      Thanks for all the clarifications.
      It's okay šŸ™‚
