Asking on behalf of sis-in-law who has a child in P2 this year.

What are collage classes? Are they for children who did not get into GEP but cleared the 1st round?

    • RE: Parents, i want your views on "listening to your child&

Good advice,Insider.Sometimes, I feel.. without this forum, there may be more wayward kids, more frustrated parents and more social problems, ok I'm exaggerating. But honestly, a 12 year old can come to this forum and let out his frustrations is a good thing. At least there are selfless, concerned aunties and uncles here that can help to 'counsel' or just lend a listening ear. I mean, it takes effort and patience to listen, understand and talk to a child ,esp when it's not your own, to help him see the problem from different perspective. From the parent's point of view as well as assuring him you also empathise with him. Hopefully, then his anger will not then blow out of proportion and cause damage. I salute you, great parents here, :salute:

Easiest method to solve this one?

A snail climbed 1cm up a wall in Day 1,
2cm in Day 2, 3cm in Day 3 and so on..

Each day, it climbed 1cm more than it did
the previous day. How many days did the
      snail take to climb 21cm?
My son tried to solve it this way and wanted to share it: 1st,21-1=20,2nd,20-2=18, 3rd,18-3=15,4th,15-4=11,5th,11-5=6,6th day,6-6=0 It's another way of listing, I guess. šŸ˜‰

Just a thought...actually what constitutes training? Does going through some Olympiad Maths sums to expose the child and explaining the difficult concepts to him equals training? What do the centres do that are different from what we can do at home, other than the drilling. Of course by going through concepts, I mean just explaining, not drilling and having lots of repetitions to make him just remember the steps to attack similar types of questions. :?

worse are those living in HDB now while holding investment ppty (pte ppty)- if want to move house, must sell 1st before buying another one, and once the existing hdb is sold, straight away kena classified as private ppty owner and if were to buy back hdb (at another location for eg) then must also sell the private one within 6 months ......then must stay in hdb another 5 years before can touch private ppty.....double whammy....

that means those living in hdb while holding private ppty for rental income cannot change / move house !!! absurd

I think it isn't very fair to let HDB owners buy private property but private property owners cannot buy HDB flats. If HDB owners can buy private properties to rent out, it means they are very rich and should not even be taking up a HDB flat. The HDB rule is that the HDB flat must be the residential address anyway so why can't a private property owner buy a flat to live in and rent out his current private property?

MY 2 cents worth... i think it's because they don't want to kill the aspiration of HDB owners who want to upgrade to pte ppty in future, and probably also because they expect most HDB flat dwellers would sell their flats bef they upgrade to pte ppty .As it is now, they will need more cash outlay before they can purchase one. However, for the other way round, though unfair , just shows how much they want to drive across the msg that HDB flats are not for investments... Actually I feel it's unfair too. šŸ˜ž

yesterday, while watching an interview with Nicholas Mak on Channel 8 news, I was shocked when he mentioned that he feels the mkt could still go up by about 10%. Is this possible, I mean it seems illogical at least at this pt in time... :?

      Hmmmm, poor kids. :gloomy:

It's not only the GEP but also happening in the mainstream. I heard one P5/P6 kid from a school in the West commit suicide last year. Really sad...

The pressure usually comes from parents then anywhere else.[/quote]

True, but GEPers will have it tougher. Not only is the syllabus tougher than mainstream, but this group is seen as 'doing no wrong' in the sense , they will not fail, they will do well in every aspect PSLE, DSA... I mean won't you raise an eyebrow if someone tells you a GEPer fails any subject? That's why if they are not 'naturally gifted', the pressure on them is going to be immense, and parents' support and understanding is so vital.
