    • RE: Brainfit Studio - Discussion

      Hi TeacherDaddy

Thanks for sharing your experience with Brainfit Classroom. I may not have checked it out otherwise although I have heard of Brainfit Studio. 😄

The computer component of their English program uses Fast ForWord which is also used in Dyslexic Association of Singapore (DAS) as part of DAS education program that all dyslexic kids need to take.
      http://www.das.org.sg/education-programme.html

I think it's a great program for kids who are poor in phonics, spelling and/or reading. My DD just went for the half hour free assessment and it's consistent with what we observed. I think for parents who suspect their kids may be dyslexic but are taking a wait-and-see attitude, check out this program to see if it will work for your child.

I will be signing her up soon once we work out the logistics. Thanks again for sharing your experience and taking the effort to maintain this thread. I will be leaving a PM for you. Please check later.

      :thankyou:

      Adel_gal:
      Hi,

I'm new to this forum. My son will be registering for P1 in 2014 (Born in 2008). My husband studied in Rosyth, so was thinking of joining the alumni so that can qualify for Phase 2A1. However, the Rosyth Alumni website states that Alumni members must render active service for at least 4 years.
Does that mean I cannot qualify under Phase 2A1 even though I have registered with the alumni (since only 2 yrs + to P1 reg). Also, can anyone advice what sort of service is required?

      Appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Just go ahead and sign up! MOE regulations should take precedence. If you are still concerned, then check out the MA and AA of the alumni association on what it takes to be a recognised alumni member as that's the only criteria in the Phase 2A1: To be a member not later than .....

As for services, I have no clue as never served. 🤷

    • RE: Ergonomic Furniture

For those who are interested in getting Kinderfun tables, there is an early bird promotion from 11-20 Nov, buy a desk and get a royce kinder chair free. I think it's limited to 1st 20 or 30 sets. Do call and ask if you are going there towards later part of promotion period. SPI and Lego bags are also on sale. I just got mine. 😉

If you are looking at Kinder Fun, I just went to the United Square store and they mentioned the promotion should be in Dec. You can leave your name + number and they will contact you when the promo is on.

      Very helpful and friendly service!

Hi toddles, very well presented views. 😄

This is a very good experience sharing and PVs really need to continuously assess their own risks and ask for information all the way up to registration.
Rosyth has made it clear in the communication to PVs (see extract from school site) that there is no guarantee. As it is, Rosyth takes in so few parent volunteers as a % of applicants which I see as an effort on the school's part to make it a good ROI for PV. It will be 10% or less success rate for PV applicants in 2011. It is difficult to please everyone.

This is where Kiasuparents forum is so useful :lovesite:

Most important, whichever school the child ultimately goes to in 2012, the child should never be made to feel negative about their new school. They should be made to feel that P1 is the start of a wonderful learning journey!

All the best to all who are moving on to Phase 2C! 🙏

***extracted from Rosyth School Admission Matters***
      8. There is no guarantee that an applicant’s child will get a place in Primary 1 in Rosyth School even though he/she may have successfully completed the Parent Volunteer Programme since the following information is not available:
-Annual P1 Intake (as this is determined by the Ministry of Education)
-Number of children registered under Phase 1.
-Number of children registered under Phase 2A1 and 2A2.
-Number of children registered under Phase 2B's Grassroots Connection.

      9. Parents are strongly encouraged to read through the past years registration statistics before application. Kindly note that balloting was conducted at Phase 2B in year 2006 and 2007.

There was as \"Assessment Information 2011\" Booklet issued to all parents (via the kids). Each level differs so for P1, it's:

      Term 1: -
      Term 2: 20%
      Term 3: 30%
      Term 4: 50%

If you refer to that, all your questions should be answered and more. 😄

      ElmoWorld:
      Hi just rec'd son's P1 report book.
Anyone knows how the teacher tabulate the marks?
What is the weightage for CA and SA?
What is the weightage for Show & Tell, Compo writing, Mini Test, Reading, etc.
      Are Spelling counted as well?

      MyBaby:
      Peace Charlie:

Where to go for the assessment test? I tried calling KKH they said they do not see kids above 7yrs so does HPB... They referred me to Child Guidance Clinic but need to get referral letter from school or polyclinic. Any other alternatives? :?

Hi Peace Charlie, are you specifically looking for assessment for dyslexia or is there other concerns?

For dyslexia, I would suggest that you work through DAS, which is a non-profit organisation receiving subsidy from Ministry of Education. DAS has a team of educational psychologist who will do the assessment. If you child is diagnosed as dyslexic, arrangements will be made for your child to attend lessons conducted by their educational therapists at one of their centres.

      Check out http://www.das.org.sg/assessments.html for details.

The cost for Full Assessment for Singaporeans is $588.50 (weekdays) and $695.50 (weekends).

Go to http://www.das.org.sg/referral-form-download.html to download a referral form (referral can only be done by the child's family member or guardian).

      Hi Peace Charlie

I called DAS and checked if my DD was referred by KKH, would there be \"discount\" for the Assessment. She mentioned no further subsidy as they are not a government organisation. So if you choose to go DAS for the assessment, don't bother to get a referral from KKH or polyclinic. The DAS Assessment waiting time would be about 4-6 weeks. Do call them to ask more questions if you like as I found the coordinator for the assessment center very helpful.

*** extracted from DAS Contact page***
      Assessment Services (New Address)
Our assessment services have relocated to the following address

      Rex House

      Singapore 229832
      Tel: 6336 2555
      Fax: 6643 9643

I also suspect my 5.5yo DD has dyslexia, waiting for her to hit 6yo so that I can send her for the full assessment. Only full assessments are recognised by MOE so that I can get special help/exemption for her if required in primary school.

MyBaby: Thanks for sharing so much, especially managing the emotional aspects of dyslexia with your child.

    • RE: P1 Chinese - General Discussion

      janet_lee88:
      Hi Yong HL,

I agree with you that the a e i o u don't apply all the time. My son gave up explaining to me liao. HaHaHa.
Hope to help clarify on tone marks.

There's a 口诀 on pg 32 of P1A Textbook (Normal Chinese) on 调号/ tone mark which is very useful. I was surprised my P1 son could rattle it off and he said it was taught by his kindergarten teacher.

有 a 不放过 (e.g. tone mark is on \"a\" in jiao and \"zao\"
      无 a 找 o e
i u 并列标在后 (when i u are together, the tone mark is on the last vowel. Examples: In \"hui\", the tone mark is on \"i\" as it's the last vowel. In \"liu\", the tone mark is on \"u\")
单个韵母不必说 (if there's only one vowel, it's always on that vowel)

The P1 textbook did not elaborate but I found these explanations in the SAP publisher ”小一高级华文课文字词手册 so have shared above.

By the way, I LOVE to buy assessment books too and big thankyou to Janet_lee88 and Plum Cake for the generous sharing in the forums! I'm definitely more excited about the books than my P1 son! :boogie:

:celebrate: Cheers to all mommies addicted to purchase of assessment books! Getting an ROI from them is another big ??? :rotflmao:

    • RE: Rosyth

Given that the success rate of PV selection is 21% (30/140), I would strongly recommend selling your possible contributions and skills as much as possible. Besides the usual PV areas, if you have niche skills, like strategy planning, project management and workshop facilitation, you should write it down. Given the school is going to move to interim premises in 2012, much planning and activities would be expected. Another area for consideration: the school website can be rejuvenated too!

Think along these lines and you may set yourself apart from the rest!
      Good luck! :rahrah:

PS. I'm an alumni member, so did not have to go thru this route. I would have done this if required.
