My younger son is in secondary 3 express this year, and will be taking O levels next year. I am a bit worried for him, as he is playful and not mature yet.


In particular, his A maths is of major concern. He got C6 for SA2. But he said the entire sec 3 cohort did badly. I heard that this year O level A maths is very difficult. I don’t know if the school is preparing them well, and whether they can be ready for the O’s by next year.

My boy did well for Physics and Chem. He told me he used the right guidebooks "Smashing Exams". Alot of the school’s worksheets and test questions came from them.

He did ok for Humanities. B3 and B4.

His languages are weak tough. C grades.

I don’t see him studying at all during the holidays. He said he is exhausted, esp after the SPA experiments after SA2. Is your child studying during the holidays? I hope I can motivate him.

I am not exactly keen on exam grades. Just want to know how to play. Guess i will give it a try soon. Gotta get a piano first i guess

Hi, I know I may sound rather silly, but is there an age range for piano beginners?


I heard that an adult will be less agile with his fingers, so it’s rather difficult to pick up piano skills.

I bought the O-Level Physics and Chem bks from Smashing Exams (http://www.smashingexams.com.sg) as well. Got the Lower Sec Vol A and B series first, then got the upper sec ones too. I tink the upper sec books are more in-depth and detailed, and complement the lower sec ones for IP students.

There is also the Marshall Cavendish Perfect Guide books (http://resource.marshallcavendish.com/mcdoc/console/DocumentDetail.aspx?viewType=catalogue&id=48959), which I got from Popular. But in my opinion, they are very bad buys. The notes are too simple, and similar to textbooks.

For MCQs, i recommend Longman 1001 MCQ, the ones with the fingers to indicate level of difficulty. Don't get the other Longman MCQ book, as the questions are kinda of easy.

TYS, avoid the SAP ones. I feel that the segregation of the the qns is poor. Also, very few qns per topic. The Dyna ones are better

Hi, i have engaged Storhub’s storage space before. For a very small room, i think maybe 50 square feet, they charge around $300. But I think it depends on location too.

It is definitely a plus if you can find someone who can teach all 4 subjects but the chances is not very high. It might be better to find tutors who specialize as they have more confidence and competence (relatively) in their subject of choice.

I know of a full-time tutor who specialises in all 4 subjects. I don't suppose he will mind circulating his contact number. But I am not exactly sure if he is still available.

Hope this is a duplicating topic, as I noticed that the other thread on Science Guide Books centers on PSLE.

Maybe we can have a thread on secondary school science books too?

My son is taking his O-Levels this year. He is taking triple science, but his grades for the three subjects have been poor.

Other than TYS, anyone has any recommendations on other science reference books?
