People who have read & felt offended would \"criticise him\" whereas people who have read & felt he is a \"nut case\" will refrain from commenting. It takes a lot to defend such remarks and usually one has to think likewise to defend such strong opinions.

Afterall, Freedom of speech doesn't mean posting disparaging remarks about others...what's more making disparaging remarks against a certain nationality collectively. If freedom of speech is defined as \"you can say whatever you wish even if it is offensive, demeaning\" , can you imagine how chaotic the world will be ? Imagine if someone walks up to another, saying \"oh come on, you look darn ugly; you must be a Singaporean\" - so is that fine ??? That's \"freedom of speech\" ???

I guess we have to look at the situation/ subject matter that caused him to shout. Shouting at students (at P5/P6 level) may not necessarily be a bad thing.

I was from a neighbourhood primary school but I was an above-average student and had a tutor who would shout at me if i did a sum wrongly (she felt i was capable of getting it right) and she not only shouted but caned some students on the palms if they repeatedly refused to remember certain formulae (sometimes the kid might be dreaming) or did not do their homework. Honestly, when i was a child, I thought that was \"scary\" but in retrospect, I saw that \"caning\" to be \"highly effective\" - the boys (fearing to get caned at every lesson ) would make sure their homework was completed & they were a lot more hardworking... in the end, most made it to Victoria. The girls had it \"easier\" - usually mere screaming was enough to \"wake the girls up\".. the boys really needed pain to \"wake up\" (hahaha). I later went to a rather elite girls' school - to be very honest, i wouldn't have made it without \"mrs terror's help\".

Now, most of us are in our late 30s (some in their 40s) and we had a little reunion with her & we even joked that if she were to do to today's kids what she did to us in yesteryears, she would have been hauled to court !!! hahahaha... but really, ALL of us appreciated it.. In fact, the boys grew up to be honourable men who are even closer to the tutor than the ladies

I wish she could come out of retirement & teach my son in 5 years time ... :))

For whose who did not attend the NDP, there is no such practices/requirements. No one is ever going to talk about a minister who does not stay still in his house or on the road when the anthem is being played. C'mon, you don't expect pedestrians crossing the road to stop halfway in the middle of the road just bcoz the anthem is being played miles away right?

Please look at the issue in context.

She is AT the PARADE and the National Anthem is being played and She is supposed to sing and stand at attention. And she is a leader, a people's representative (Elected MP), a role model.. (who mis-behaved).

I feel most of the criticism against her is valid and justified.

Actually she wouldn't have drawn that much criticism if she had simply apologised & not try to divert attention away from her glaring mistake by lecturing netizens with \"NDP is a time to unite; not divide\" ... That last sentence was a little out of context... Afterall, who is dividing the country? People are just pinpointing about her inappropriate behaviour during national anthem; not dividing the country. It just made matters worse when she opened her mouth! Maybe it's time to consider attaching PR consultants to MPs (read: job creation! haha) to teach them proper decorum, including what to say & what not to say

It's a symptom of a much deeper socio-cultural problem. There's a problem if every piece of news results in \"ah... it's the PR again\" reaction from almost everyone.

The Government must address this issue immediately, instead of ignoring the problem or simply attributing it to growing pains. Growing pains can be addressed by increasing infrastructure. But if there is distrust between major groups in a community, things can get really complex and unpleasant.

What I'm really uncomfortable with is how the Government is keeping quiet on this issue. The worst thing we can do is to ignore it or just say it can't be helped because we have to do what we need so that Singapore can punch above its weight. I want to see an acknowledgement that there is a PROBLEM resulting from the poor integration of new members of our society into our community. I want to know what plans are in store to restore trust between SGs and PRs, before things get out of hand.

INDEED. My exact sentiments.
I do not detest anyone who is not born here but lives here and much as i would like to welcome them, i cannot turn a blind eye to the social issues arising as a result of their existence. Our cultural differences have so far led to issues that left many perplexed. This is clearly a sign of our society \"struggling with integration\" ... Just because we are multi-racial, multi-religion & have succeeded in being a united nation thus far (despite the differences) doesn't mean we can \"import new differences in bulk\" & expect success overnight. We have to be mindful and give due consideration & acknowledgement to the more complex cultural differences that we have \"imported over\".

Being multi-racial, we actually grew up together...hence culturally, the Chinese, Malays, Indians & Eurasians have grown used to one another's culture & accepted one another's way of living & have graciously accorded one another space & respect. But when a certain PRC moves in & starts to complain about the Indian cooking curry ???? The matter is so trivial that it gets \"annoyingly unacceptable\"... How do they like it if the Indian family in turn complains about the smell of rice... and forbids them to eat their staple (rice) when they are at home? There is simply zero tolerance for one another... Our years of social education, about respecting one another's race & religion have gone down the drain... but yet our government is remaining tight-lipped about all these.

Our ruling party garnered 60% votes during recent GE but if these issues go on unresolved, (ie can't be helped), what will happen in the next GE ?

I worry about the future of Singapore just as I worry about the future of my son.

ps: I am not targetting PRC per se ... just using the example to stress a point about rapid influx of FTs causing undue distress amongst locals ... another example is the Pinoy who made blatant comment about our local men & NS'... such things will go on & on if there is no intervention.
