Indeed, it will be quite difficult to get into the school unless you are an old girl or stay near the school, judging from past years P1 registration trend. And the school does not offer any PV scheme.


When my daughter was 4, I called up the school to offer my services. I was advised to fill up a form, stating the kind of services that I could provide. I later talked to the school registrar and found out that unless I can offer a very specific kind of service that the school cannot get from parents of existing girls, it is very unlikely that they will enlist my help. I was advised to shift near the school. An alternative I guess is to be a grassroot leader.

Eventually, I did not register my daughter during phase 2C as there was literally no chance for girls staying outside 2km that year. However, I put her on waiting list. She was called up to sit for entrance tests sometime middle of her P1 and was selected for an interview. Subsequently, she was offered a place to enter P2. And we took it. So, this could be an alternative for you to consider if you are OK with school transfer.

From my understanding, about half the places for IP were given in DSA. The remaining were available for PSLE central posting. I believe this applies to most independent schools, except for NUS High.

I shall attempt to answer some of the questions based on what I know.

Q1
About 1/2 the IP places are offered during DSA. You need to indicate if you are applying for IP or Express in your DSA application. If you want to be considered for both, then you need to fill up both applications. The DSA offer indicates which program you are being given. So, if you are offerd IP, then you will get into IP as long as your PSLE score is eligible for Express stream.
As for students applying using PSLE score, you will be offered IP once you are admitted into the school and your score is above the IP cutoff score. This score varies from year to year, depending on the results of the cohort.

Q2
Not true for now, may change in future as the school is building additional blocks for boarding school. For this year, only the Y2 local IP students are offered the opportunity to apply. As there is limited places, not all will get in.

Q4
For this year Y1 IP, the GEP students are grouped into 2 classes, under SBGE (School-Based Gifted Education) programme. There is a mix of other non-GEP students in these 2 classes too as the total number of GEPers in IP is less than 50. I am not sure how the school select.
GEPers in Express are also grouped into 1 class, and mixed with other students.

I would like to share on my son’s experience in writing personal statement for DSA last year.


For his personal statement, he has included his reason for choosing the school. his strength (which I encouraged him to choose attributes which are non-academic) with supporting anecdotes, his interests and his aspirations. All done in 1 page.

FYI, he got a waitlist offer which he put as first choice and was subsequently admitted into his school of choice.

I hope this helps to give you some idea, though I am not sure if it was helpful in gaining an admission for him.

I did the GD method on my 2 kids for both English and Maths. Let me just say that it works wonder for my son. He could read very well from K1, like a level 12 Ladybird. hHs Maths mental sum is accurate and fast, he was able to memorize multiplication table up to 13 when he was in K2. The same cannot be said for my daughter, perhaps I was not as conscientious since she was the second child. But, she caught on, she started reading full-length novels like the Harry Potter series, Artemis Fowl series since P3.


I guess learning how to read is like decoding. Once you decode it, and if you are immersed in an English speaking environment, you keep hearing the words being used, so you can associate it quite easily. I think the strength of the method is in engaging the child since young and if it is done consistently, the child would have been exposed to a huge number of words before he hits kindergarten.

I consciously practise rewarding effort and not results. After every major exam, before the results are back, we will go Hagan Daaz for a good ice cream treat. This is the only time the kids get to have such ice cream treat, so they are always very excited.


There is no monetary or any material rewards for results, just congratulations from us.

My P4 daughter has told me she has problem with number sequence too, just the night before her SA1 !


I don’t know if there is any formula to that so I checked with my son. He was pretty good with the number sequence staff in primary, therefore I didn’t hear any problem of this sort before. But alas, very hard to get anything out of his mind, I sometimes don’t understand how it works. Finally, I came to some sort of conclusion and told my daughter to look out for the rate of change between each number, if it is kind of same rate, you work in the direction of addition and subtraction, if it is exponential, then work in the direction of multiplication and division. Not sure how much she understood, actually not sure how much it makes sense too.

My son mentioned that his sis should look at number sequence more often and memorize the product of some numbers. I know this appeals to him tremendously and he has been doing it from young. But for my daughter it is going to be tough. Hopefully, this is just a 1-mark question that she can afford to lose…

No, I don’t specialize in Mandarin. It was more a colour that I have used to name an online game avatar, a spur-of-the-moment fancy kind of thing. So, I just continue using it.

In fact, my 2 kids are struggling with Chinese in school, I guess just like the majority of the kids out there.
