I don't know what the test for DSA in SST is called but its quite similar to New south wales exams, which is conducted in one day if the your child is shortlisted then he is called for the 2nd round which involves a group project and then interview.

Not really, it is more harder than ICAS. Most likely it is GEP Selection Test. If your child was doing very well in his/her school exam, there is nothing to worry it. 😄

He is very entrenched in that school because of his friends. You know kids at this age their world revolves around their friends. He doesn't want to pull out. But I feel that the school is not really suited for him judging from how he had degenerated academically as well as morally over the past 1 year.

Maybe its generation gap? I dunno really. But seeing him posting crude language and making disrespectful remarks on social media is quite hard to accept. But he says thats how teenager speaks and communicate these days!!?? He says all his friends are like this, i wonder. His grades are borderline but he says so are his friends. He dont even bother to watch TV and hardly engage in outdoor activities. If he is not on his macbook, than he is on his handphone. We restrict his access to these gadgets and he sulks and shut himself out.

Maybe it just him and not the school. Maybe I am lousy father and looking to find excuse. I dunno. Our relationship with him had distant farther and farther over the past few mths. 🤷

What parents say and advise is never cool. You might want to look into a 3rd party to help deliver the right concepts. Perhaps a teacher or a counsellor might do some wonders. To have a good relationship, you will have to be his friend not his parent. Does SST have a school counsellor?

One of the fastest ways to communicate better with your children is to learn when to communicate. If your child is angry or sad, hold your tongue. Give support to your child and let them talk to you about what happened. If you are upset about their actions any kind of lecture, punishment or consequence, can wait for them to calm down. Our children need to feel like they have support, even in a situation you don't approve of or agree with, the best time to let them know about your disappointment is after they know that they are loved and they can communicate openly.

      Hi Sotong Dad,

Not all kids are made for the same type of learning.

Some like more hands on enaging style while others mean do way better the tradition way with books and pens. I presume SST would be more poly style at secondary level?

You know your child best. Maybe you want to sit down and talk with the teachers and your child.
SST prepares its students well for post-secondary education, whether in the Junior Colleges (JCs) or polytechnics. The applied teaching pedagogies adopted by the school will allow students to build a strong foundation in key academic concepts as well as strong competence in real-world problem solving, which will serve the students well in their post-secondary education, whether in a JC or in a Polytechnic.

I regretted sending my son to this school.

He spent all his time on the Macbook these days. Grades went down, became very insensitive and disrespectful to people around him. I have had endless heated conservations with him over the \"learning device\" until I now almost given up.

If your child lack the discipline to refrain from overindulgence in computer time and you dont have the time to keep watching over him/her, than better think twice about sending him/her to this school.
In my opinion, its not just SST. River Valley High School is also starting to use the iPad, and all the parents are also saying the same thing as sotongdad. Now, we just have to accept it. Also, all his school notes are now on his computer, and also there are many things he need to do on his MacBook, like science projects, reports, and many other things. Don't think that because he is using his MacBook, he is playing as this is an ignorant excuse for wanting your child to close his Macbook. If you think your child is more suitable for textbook learning, then send him to a mainstream school.

Does being in Robotics CCA help in SST's DSA?

DS wants to switch to Robotics for this year previously he was with the Science club.

      Any advise?

Yes but I think in order to make an impact, need to win competitions.

Robotics is very popular in SST. My boy tried to get in in Sec 1 but there is only about 40 vacancies with about 100 applications (ie half the cohort).

      Correction: 20 vacancies only

My wife and I attended the SST Parent seminar on Saturday, 14 April. We were late and when we entered the auditorium, their V Principal was giving a presentation. The first impression I get when hearing her talk did not give me a good impression (I may be wrong of course).

She seemed to be talking at a \"superior\" level. What I mean is she seemed not an easy person to deal with. After the talk, when I told my wife what the impression I got, she also said she felt the same way.

Does anyone out there has experience with her?

Do take note that once you have accepted the confirmed offer via DSA, you cannot appeal and change schools upon release of PSLE results. Many parents were caught by this ruling which was strictly enforced for the 2011 PSLE P6 batch.

SST would be O Levels so not as attractive compared to the other band 1 and 2 schools that has O Levels.

Definitely no point comparing. Each parent (and child) makes they decisions to the best of their ability. Those in SST will gain certain things that they would not have gained in other schools. Especially mainstream school. All school run their own programmes. I'm sure the opportunities and exposures are different for the child as well.

      Pooh Bear:
My son went for DSA for both NUSH and SST. My son has CO from NUSH. Should I even consider SST seriously or just forget abt SST and go for NUSH? I know SST is 4 years, leading to O Level, while NUSH is IP, leading to NUSH Diploma. Is there any merit of SST over NUSH that I should consider?

SST aims to cater to capable, university-bound students with a strong interest in applied science areas related to technology, media and design. During the selection process, the school takes into consideration the potential ability of students to do well in and benefit from the programme.
SST selects students based on their cognitive ability, aptitude for applied learning, interests and motivation.Applied Learning is not a new concept and there is growing demand for it among Singaporean students. Since 2007, over 2300 students have participated in more than 60 Advanced Elective Modules in 70 schools.
SST is the first one-stop school where students can choose from 3 Applied Subjects. While SST offers students a range of options in applied areas related to technology, media and design, it also provides its students with a strong foundation in the core subjects within the languages, Math, Humanities and Science.
Taught using Applied Learning methodologies, students will be able to grasp the concepts better and see how these are relevant and applicable in the real world context. SST believes that applied learning will enhance students’ appreciation and hence application of theories and concepts. :rahrah:
